Peer recovery services are a community-based treatment option for people suffering from mental illness and/or substance use problems. Peer services provide an alternative to inpatient care and can help decrease costs associated with hospitalization or incarceration of the mentally ill. Yet, scant research has explored the effect of these services, particularly in rural communities. The current study assesses the impact of peer services on peer mentees' and mentors' recovery capital, quality of life, and general wellness. Consumers of peer services completed three surveys every three months for

This study explored perceptions, needs, and barriers of sub-Saharan African migrants in relation to HIV voluntary counseling and testing (VCT). Using an inductive qualitative methodological approach, data were obtained from focus group discussions. Results showed that participants were in principle in favor of VCT. However, they indicated that barriers outweighed advantages. Such barriers included fear of positive test results and its related personal and social consequences, lack of information, lack of preventive health behavior, denial of HIV risk, and missed opportunities. Limited financia

BACKGROUND: Community-oriented medical education seeks to align medical training with priority community health needs and their lived realities. While longitudinal community-based clerkships are increasingly adopted to promote socially accountable graduates, there is limited qualitative insights into how these experiences can transform students’ understanding of community health needs, particularly in resource-constrained settings. OBJECTIVE: This study explored how participation in a 20-week Integrated Longitudinal Community Clerkship at a South African medical school transformed medical stud

The World Health Organization (WHO) refers to cervical cancer as a public health problem, and sub-Saharan Africa bears the world's highest incidence. In the realm of screening, simplified WHO recommendations for low-resource countries now present an opportunity for a public health approach to this public health problem. We evaluated the feasibility of such a public health approach to cervical cancer screening that features community-based self-administered HPV testing and mobile treatment provision. In two rural districts of western-central Uganda, Village Health Team members led community mob

Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) has become an accepted treatment modality for refractory cardiogenic shock (CS). However, its use is limited to tertiary centers due to resource allocation, education, and personnel requirements. The cannulate-and-ship model has therefore emerged to extend access to VA-ECMO. This model faces several communication, education, and logistical challenges. We describe the safety and early outcomes of a regional VA-ECMO training and air medical transport program that uses a text-message-based communication protocol and an "always open" VA-E

Further education (FE) colleges are the most usual postsecondary education destination for deaf young people in England. The role of college contexts in promoting deaf students' learning warrants further exploration given the gaps in educational attainment common to deaf students and the potential for FE context to provide new and/or enhanced linguistic resources in comparison with school. The main research question is: How do deaf students' translanguaging practices change according to the different contexts of interlocution in college? Translanguaging entails the flexible use of semiotic res

Patients who show an above-average utilization of medical care are described as "heavy users". Heavy utilization of psychiatric inpatient care could be reduced by well directed community based services. Heavy users should, therefore, be identified at the beginning of a period of heavy service consumption. For this reason, a screening instrument (SPSI) was developed. Six predictors of heavy utilization of inpatient care were included as items in the SPSI. Weighting of items and examination of the instrument were carried out with a sample of 184 schizophrenia patients, whose utilization of inpat

At present, food safety culture (FSC) is a strategic dimension of food management systems, as established by EU Regulation 2021/382. Understanding how individual and organizational factors influence the safety climate is essential for designing effective training interventions. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in Southern Italy from March to September 2025 among 216 workers from 52 food businesses located in the provinces of Bari and Barletta-Andria-Trani, using a questionnaire based on a validated scale, which is structured into five dimensions of leadership, communication,

INTRODUCTION: Community health centers and clinics are on the frontlines of climate change and adverse health effects, providing essential care to millions of low-income, uninsured, and underinsured populations across the country. The Climate Resilience for Frontline Clinics Toolkit ("the toolkit") was developed to support frontline clinicians in preparing for climate-related health risks. The objectives of this study were to assess the utilization and challenges in the implementation of the toolkit in real-world clinic settings and to guide further development of clinic-based risk reduction r

BACKGROUND: Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) patients experience barriers to reproductive healthcare and higher rates of adverse birth outcomes compared to their hearing peers. Furthermore, perinatal clinicians are often ill-prepared to provide appropriate care for this population. This qualitative research study explores the experiences and perspectives of perinatal clinicians who have provided care for DHH patients to better understand barriers and facilitators to providing optimal pregnancy-related healthcare.
METHODS: Interviews were conducted with twelve perinatal clinicians from different

BACKGROUND: Individuals living in rural communities experience substantial geographic and infrastructure barriers to attaining health equity in accessing tobacco use cessation treatment. Social media and other digital platforms offer promising avenues to improve access and overcome engagement challenges in tobacco cessation efforts. Research has also shown a positive correlation between faith-based involvement and a lower likelihood of smoking, which can be used to engage rural communities in these interventions.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and beta test a social intervention proto

This article explores how productive ageing programmes both support and constrain older adults in a low-income Seoul community. Based on three years of participant observation and 62 interviews, it shows how welfare organizations and frontline social workers translate policy through performance pressures, capacity-based expectations, and responsibilization. I describe this tension as the Productive Ageing Governance Paradox (PAGP). While these programmes offer material and relational resources, they may also produce stigma, unequal participation, and withdrawal. The findings highlight the cont

Accommodating pharmacy students with physical disabilities during the experiential learning portion of the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum can present unique challenges for pharmacy schools. The available literature regarding accommodations for pharmacy students in the experiential learning environment is sparse, leaving programs with little guidance. This commentary from the Big Ten Academic Alliance calls on the Academy to create a community of shared resources and best practice examples and offers practical suggestions for accommodating pharmacy students with mobility, vision, and au

Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, and its harms are well established. Physicians have more evidence-based resources than ever before to effectively treat smoking, including new uses and combinations of U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved pharmacotherapies and expanded community programs. In addition, electronic nicotine delivery systems are potential treatment tools, but their safety and efficacy need to be established. Finally, high-priority groups, such as persons with cancer diagnoses or hospitalized patients, may benefit from particular

Given the incidence of child sexual abuse in the United States, mental health professionals need training to detect, assess, and treat victims and should possess a clear understanding of the process of victimization. However, many mental health professionals who work with children and families have not been exposed to any training in child sexual abuse during their formal education. This article will examine the need for such training, suggest critical components of child sexual abuse training, and describe various methods of training (e.g., in person, Web-based, and community resources).
