Two cases of acute non-haemorrhagic conjunctivitis due to coxsackievirus A24 (CA24) are described. These are the first Australian isolates. The presentation was as a severe conjunctivitis in otherwise healthy adults who had not travelled outside Australia. The course was of short duration and self-limiting with no long-term sequelae. The isolates could not be neutralised by antiserum prepared against prototype CA24 but were identified by immune electron microscopy and complement fixation.

The first outbreak of Q fever in Uruguay occurred in 1956. The infection, which is caused by Coxiella burnetti, occurs in sheep, cattle, swine, and horses, but not in fowl or guinea pig. Most of the cases studied have been traced to cattle. Fourteen outbreaks of this disease were studied between 1975 and 1985. All of the 1,358 clinically suspected cases (814 serologically confirmed) reported in Uruguay occurred in workers at meat-processing plants. Diagnoses of cases and serologic surveys were made by use of complement fixation, capillary agglutination, and layer microagglutination techniques.

Histolyn-CYL, a yeast phase skin-test reagent, was administered to 85 histoplasmin-sensitive subjects living in the United States and South America. In a multicenter study, sera were obtained at the time the skin tests were read and again 3 weeks later. In no instance did the skin test induce significant complement-fixing antibody changes or antibodies detected by immuno-diffusion.

A search was made in LCM virus-immune mice for virus-specific antibodies. With the help of an L-cell plaque assay, neutralizing antibody was readily detected. There were no essential differences between mouse strains, but marked differences existed between virus strains. Whereas the inoculation of either large or small doses of WE strain virus led to the early production of considerable concentrations of neutralizing antibody, in the case of E-350 strain virus, high doses were required and a much longer time interval had to elapse before the threshold of detection was attained. In addition to

Serologic studies for rubella (hemagglutination inhibition and complement fixation changes) were carried out at two-week intervals in 15 patients with acute idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and in age-matched controls in the same season during a small rubella epidemic. Hemagglutination inhibition, sucrose density gradient for hemagglutination inhibition, and complement fixation titer changes implicated recent rubella infection as an etiologic factor in five of the 15 patients.

The presence of antibodies to some alphaviruses, flaviviruses, bunyaviruses and orbiviruses was studied in the sera from humans and domestic animals of biotopes "C" and "T" in the south-east of Romania. Specific antibodies were found in humans to 3 alphaviruses (eastern equine encephalitis, western equine encephalitis and Sindbis), in a very low proportion, and to 3 flaviviruses (tickborne encephalitis, West Nile and Ntaya), at a much higher percentage. Very low percentages of antibodies to Bunyavirus and Kemerovo virus were also detected. The proportion of antibodies to flaviruses (tick-borne
