Understanding the Relationship Between Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms: A Systematic Review.

Background: It is well documented in the scientific literature that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and various eating disorders may present overlapping psychopathological traits. Exploring these aspects could help to identify underlying features that connect different diagnostic categories. However, evidence is lacking regarding certain less-studied eating disorders, such as avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). The aim of this review is to investigate the presence of comorbidity between OCD and ARFID and, consequently, the psychopathological similarities between these disord

Prevalence, comorbidity, and predictors of obsessive-compulsive disorder in Iranian children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disease that causes personal distress or social dysfunction, especially in childhood. The present study aimed to provide the prevalence, comorbidity, and predictors of OCD among children and adolescents. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional national project conducted on 29,858 children and adolescents using the multi-stage cluster random sampling in Iran. There were both genders in each cluster and three age groups (6-9, 10-14, and 15-18 years) within each cluster. The tools used in this research included a demographic questio

The distinctiveness of compulsive hoarding from obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The present study investigated the relation of compulsive hoarding to other obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms in a sample of 162 patients with OCD. Obsessions and compulsions reported on the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for DSM-IV were submitted to an exploratory factor analysis. Results suggested a four-factor model: "Certainty," "Contamination," "Obsessions," and "Numbers/Ordering." Hoarding did not load on any factor. The sample was divided into three groups: pure hoarding, nonhoarding OCD, and mixed OCD and hoarding. The hoarding group endorsed significantly less anxiety

Perspectives of Individuals With Lived Experience on Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Treatment Delivery, Supports, and Research.

An online survey was conducted to understand the perspectives of adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; N=378) on modes of treatment delivery, importance of educational resources and supports, and priorities for research. Quantitative and qualitative data analyses revealed interest in in-person rather than remote treatment, medication-specific educational resources, and various research topics, including treatment development, factors that contribute to recovery or relapse, methods to improve access to evidence-based care, and causes of OCD. The findings point to key areas to better a

"We're a happy family": Joey Ramone and family burden in obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.

Introduction: Jeffry Hyman (1951-2001), an introvert boy from Queens, New York City, grew up to become one of the most iconic figures in New York's punk rock scene in the mid-1970s: Joey Ramone. In this study, we explored how Joey and his family coped with his health issues and peculiar behaviors, which were eventually identified as symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Methods: A narrative review of biographical sources was conducted to explore and infer the impact of Joey's OCD on his close relationships. Results: The onset of OCD and concomitant hoarding behaviors during his teen

The structure of obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

In the present study, the structure of obsessive-compulsive symptoms was investigated by means of the Padua Inventory (PI). Simultaneous Components Analysis on data from obsessive-compulsives (n = 206), patients with other anxiety disorders (n = 222), and a non clinical sample (n = 430) revealed a five-factor solution. These factors are: (I) impulses; (II) washing; (III) checking; (IV) rumination; and (V) precision. Forty-one items were selected as measure of these factors. The reliability for the five subscales, assessing each of the five factors, was found to be satisfactory to excellent. Fo

Beyond symptom improvement: transdiagnostic and disorder-specific ways to assess functional and quality of life outcomes across mental disorders in adults.

Improving meaningful outcomes is the main goal of clinical care for mental disorders. Traditionally, the focus in clinical research and practice has been on outcome domains that refer to symptom severity or service use (e.g., hospitalization), relate to categorical diagnoses, and favour clinician-rated measures. More recently, self-rated and dimensional as well as transdiagnostic outcome domains have gained traction, and functioning, quality of life and well-being/life satisfaction, along with the construct of personal recovery, have become a stronger focus. These key multidimensional outcome

Effectiveness of psychotherapy: Synthesis of a "meta-analytic research domain" across world regions and 12 mental health problems.

The scientific output generated in psychology has surged in recent decades, including the number of studies investigating psychological treatments. To keep track of all this evidence, we developed the "Metapsy" meta-analytic research domain: a comprehensive system of open databases and tailored software that allows for rapid evidence generation. We leverage this novel infrastructure to summarize the effect of psychological treatment across 12 mental health problems and trace back the global expansion of psychotherapy research over the past 50 years. Including 1,029 studies with 85,952 patients

Children's and parent's psychological profiles in selective mutism and generalized anxiety disorder: a clinical study.

Selective mutism (SM) is classified in DSM-5 as an anxiety disorder. The aim of the study was to investigate the psychological features of children with SM and their parental psychological profiles, compared to generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) children and their parents. The parents of 26 preschool children with SM and 32 with children with GAD filled out the child behavior check list for 1½-5 years (CBCL1½-5) and the symptom checklist-90-revised (SCL-90-R). Information about the children and their parents' histories was collected through clinical interviews. Children with SM scored higher t

Continuous theta burst stimulation to relieve symptoms in patients with moderate obsessive-compulsive disorder: a preliminary study with an external validation.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a clinically challenging and refractory psychiatric disorder characterized by pathologically hyperactivated brain activity. Continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) is considered a potentially non-invasive treatment for inducing inhibitory effects on the underlying cortex. Numerous studies showed an unsatisfactory efficacy of cTBS for OCD. Accordingly, it seems that cTBS is ineffective for OCD. However, the neglect of varying OCD severities, modest sample size, absence of a multicenter design incorporating inpatients and outpatients, and lack of personal

Obsessive-compulsive behaviors in parents of multiplex autism families.

Parents of autistic probands with high and low rates of repetitive behaviors were compared for rates of obsessive-compulsive traits and disorder. The rate of repetitive behaviors was assessed using the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) in 176 autistic probands from 57 multiplex families. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in parents was determined by direct interview using a parental history questionnaire, with screening for obsessive-compulsive traits using the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale checklist. Children who had high total scores on the repetitive behavior domain of t

Characterizing Rare DNA Copy-Number Variants in Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common neuropsychiatric disorder in which genetic factors play an important role. Recent studies have demonstrated an enrichment of rare de novo DNA single-nucleotide variants in persons with OCD compared to controls, and larger studies have examined copy-number variants (CNVs) using microarray data. Our study examines rare de novo CNVs using whole-exome sequencing (WES) data to provide additional insight into genetic factors and biological processes underlying OCD. METHOD: We detected CNVs using whole-exome DNA sequencing (WES) da

Oxytocin Receptor Gene DNA Methylation: A Biomarker of Treatment Response in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?

INTRODUCTION: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is associated with high chronicity and treatment resistance, indicating the need for early therapy response markers enabling fast and personalized treatment adaptations. Although epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation of the oxytocin receptor (OXTR) gene have previously been linked to OCD pathogenesis, epigenetic markers as predictors of treatment success have not yet been investigated in OCD. OBJECTIVE: For the first time, this therapyepigenetic study aimed to investigate the role of OXTR methylation as a treatment response marker in O
