Dual protection: more needed than practised or understood.

Although non-barrier contraceptive use has become a global norm, unprotected sex in relation to sexually transmitted infections remains the … 2005. Definitions of dual protection, found mainly in family planning literature, are very narrow. Condoms remain the mainstay of dual protection, but the aim of this paper is to provide an expanded list of dual protection methods to show that there is a range of options. These include non-penetrative sex and the increasing use of condoms with the back-u …

Little change in sexual behavior in injecting drug users in Amsterdam.

To assess heterosexual behavior of injecting drug users (IDUs) over time, we studied 174 IDUs with regard to their steady, casual, and commercial partners over a 1-year period. Within this year a large national AIDS prevention campaign had been implemented in the Netherlands. In addition, condom use was discussed with participants during various follow-up visits. We found a large turnover in IDUs who reported having steady, casual, or commercial partners. Limited change in sexual behavior occurred: the frequent use of condoms increased only with casual partners (from 30 to 49%), and the propor…

High-risk STD/HIV behavior among college students.

The current sexually transmitted disease (STD) epidemic in adolescents has led to concern about the potential for spread of the human immuno … with a partner, use of oral contraceptives, insufficient knowledge of HIV/STDs, and the belief that condoms interfere with sexual pleasure. These factors are potentially amenable to change. Effective, behaviorally focused educational programs are needed to improve condom use and reduce STD/HIV risk.

"I will take PrEP because that's what will help me not to get infected with HIV": barriers to and facilitators of pre-exposure prophylaxis and condom use among adolescent girls and young women enrolled in a school-based HIV prevention program in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: The Imagine programme is a school-based HIV prevention program offering preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP), condoms and other social and structural interventions to adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in South Africa. PrEP uptake and adherence together with the provision of condoms has not been extensively studied in the school context. We explored the barriers to and facilitators of PrEP and condom usage among Imagine programme beneficiaries using the HIV prevention cascade framework. METHODS: Sixteen AGYW aged 16-20 years who had never taken PrEP, were on PrEP or had stopped P…

Effects of messaging about multiple biomedical and behavioral HIV prevention methods on intentions to use among US MSM: results of an experimental messaging study.

Combining multiple biomedical and behavioral HIV prevention approaches is a priority for at-risk populations such as men who have sex with men (MSM), and it is essential to understand how receiving messages about multiple approaches impacts attitudes and intentions for their use. We examined whether receiving combinations of different HIV prevention messages produced differences in perceived benefits and costs of condom use, and in intentions to use condoms and biomedical prevention approaches. MSM (N = 803) were recruited online and were randomly assigned to view informational messages about …

Sexually transmitted diseases are frequent in adolescence and facilitates HIV contamination. The early age limit of the first sexual intercourse, the diversity of partners, the habit of not using condoms and illicit drug abuse are pointed out as risk factors for sexual transmitted disease. We interviewed 356 adolescents who sought medical attendance at the Adolescent Health Study Center of The State University of Rio de Janeiro between August/2001 and July/2002 regarding their sexuality and to identify risk behaviors. Periodical analysis and chi-square tests were performed on the collected dat…

On the Efficacy and Mediation of a One-on-One HIV Risk-Reduction Intervention for African American Men Who Have Sex with Men: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

We examined the efficacy and mediation of Being Responsible for Ourselves (BRO), an HIV/STI risk-reduction intervention for African American men who have sex with men (MSM), the population with the highest HIV-diagnosis rate in the US. We randomized African American MSM to one of two interventions: BRO HIV/STI risk-reduction, targeting condom use; or attention-matched control, targeting physical activity and healthy diet. The interventions were based on social cognitive theory, the reasoned-action approach, and qualitative research. Men reporting anal intercourse with other men in the past 90

Gender-based differences in the high-risk sexual behaviours of young people aged 15-29 in Melilla (Spain): a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Research confirms the existence of gender-based differences regarding the high-risk sexual behaviour (non-use of condoms and casual partners) of young men and women.
