Optimizing nitrogen fertilization in maize: the impact of nitrification inhibitors, phosphorus application, and microbial interactions on enhancing nutrient efficiency and crop performance.

Despite the essential role of nitrogen fertilizers in achieving high crop yields, current application practices often exhibit low efficiency. Optimizing nitrogen (N) fertilization in agriculture is, therefore, critical for enhancing crop productivity while ensuring sustainable food production. This study investigates the effects of nitrification inhibitors (Nis) such as Dimethyl Pyrazole Phosphate (DMPP) and Dimethyl Pyrazole Fulvic Acid (DMPFA), plant growth-promoting bacteria inoculation, and phosphorus (P) application on the soil-plant-microbe system in maize. DMPFA is an organic nitrificat

Sulfur from biogas desulfurization: Fate of S during storage in manure and after application to plants.

Residues from hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removal in biogas filters contain sulfur (S) in various forms (sulfate, sulfide, elemental S) that, if properly stored, is potentially valuable as crop fertilizer. We investigated 1) the turnover of the S compounds from filter materials during storage in untreated and digested cattle manure (CM), and 2) the S fertilizer replacement value (SFRV) of the filter materials applied in pure form or mixed manure with and without storage. The S filter materials from four H2S removal processes (biological and physical-chemical) containing mostly sulfate and/or elemen

Brassinolide-mediated physiological and biochemical adaptation in rye (Secale cereale L.) under aluminum and freeze-thaw stress.

BACKGROUND: Environmental stresses such as extreme temperatures, salinity, drought, metal toxicity and freeze-thaw (FT) cycles severely limit crop productivity. The increasing frequency of FT events combined with aluminum (Al) toxicity, exacerbated by global warming, poses a serious threat to seedling survival, especially in early spring. Brassinolide (BL), a phytohormone, enhances plant resilience under abiotic stress, yet its role under combined FT and Al stress in rye (Secale cereale L.) remains unexplored. RESULTS: Al stress increased malondialdehyde content, indicating membrane lipid per

Halophilic plant growth-promoting bacterial consortium reshapes soil microbiota to enhance salinity tolerance, antioxidant defense, and yield in Vigna mungo L.

Soil salinity is a major abiotic stress that severely restricts crop productivity by disrupting ionic balance, inducing osmotic stress, and promoting oxidative damage. Black gram (Vigna mungo L.), an important pulse crop, is highly sensitive to salinity, resulting in reduced growth, physiological performance, and yield. The present study evaluated the efficacy of a compatible multi-strain HPGPB consortium comprising MKM3 (Halobacillus marinus), MKM4 (Halobacillus halophilus), and MKM11 (Halobacillus halophilus) in enhancing salinity tolerance in two black gram varieties (VBN8 and VBN11) under

Selenium nanoparticles and wheat straw biochar synergistically alleviate combined drought-heat stress in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) by modulating antioxidant defense, photosynthetic efficiency, and ion homeostasis.

Combined drought and heat stress (DS+HS) represents one of the most devastating multi-factorial constraints on global wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production, imposing synergistic physiological and molecular damage that far exceeds the effects of each stress applied individually. Emerging evidence suggests that selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) and biochar independently confer abiotic stress tolerance in cereal crops; however, their combined soil application under concurrent DS+HS in wheat has not been previously investigated. The present study was conducted at the wire house facility of the Fou

RNA interference mediated disease resistance in vegetable crops: fundamental discovery to current trends.

Vegetable productivity has been decreasing due to a range of stresses, both biotic and abiotic. Biotic factors mainly arise from nematodes, bacteria, viruses and fungal diseases. Traditional approaches such as chemical treatments and conventional breeding are often limited by environmental concerns and restricted genetic resources. Therefore, RNA interference (RNAi) has demonstrated significant promise as a molecular strategy for combating biotic stresses in vegetable crops, offering precision and sustainability in managing plant diseases. RNAi utilizes double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) to silence t

Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria for mitigating salinity stress in rice farming: a review of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta.

Salinity intrusion, exacerbated by climate change and anthropogenic activities, poses a significant global threat to agricultural productivity, particularly in coastal and deltaic regions. Rice, a staple crop critical for food security and economic stability in many developing nations, is highly susceptible to salt stress, which reduces yields and threatens livelihoods. In the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD), a key rice-producing region, recurrent drought-induced salinity events have caused substantial damage to agriculture, and the economic well-being of millions of residents. These events high

Hydrogen sulfide generated by L-cysteine desulfhydrase 1 enhances plant basal thermotolerance through the regulation of stomatal behavior and the promotion of photosynthetic efficiency.

Heat stress (HS) severely limits plant growth and crop yields, becoming a critical challenge for global food production. As a gasotransmitter, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been reported to participate in plants HS adaptation, however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Time-course analysis showed that HS duration-dependently boosted endogenous H2S production, with both transcriptional upregulation and enzymatic activation of the L-Cysteine desulfhydrase 1 (DES1). Over-expression of DES1 enhanced basal thermotolerance in Arabidopsis, whereas the DES1 knockout mutant (des1) exhibited height

Limestone and yellow gypsum can reduce cadmium accumulation in groundnut (Arachis hypogaea): A study from a three-decade old landfill site.

Cadmium (Cd) toxicity has cropped up as an important menace in the soil-plant system. The use of industrial by-products to immobilise Cd in situ in polluted soils is an interesting remediation strategy. In the current investigation, two immobilizing amendments of Cd viz., Limestone (traditionally used) and Yellow gypsum (industrial by-product) have been used through a green-house pot culture experiment. Soil samples were collected from four locations based on four graded levels of DTPA extractable Cd as Site 1 (0.43 mg kg-1), Site 2 (0.92 mg kg-1), Site 3 (1.77 mg kg-1) and Site 4 (4.48 mg kg-

Rape straw application facilitates Se and Cd mobilization in Cd-contaminated seleniferous soils by enhancing microbial iron reduction.

Many naturally seleniferous soils are faced with Cd contamination problem, which severely limits crop cultivation in these areas. Straw returning has been widely applied in agricultural production due to its various benefits to soil physicochemical properties, soil fertility, and crops yield. However, effects of straw application on the fates of Se and Cd in Cd-contaminated seleniferous soils remain largely unclear. Therefore, the effects of straw application on the fates of Se and Cd in Cd-contaminated seleniferous soils were investigated in this study. The results showed that iron reduction

Comparative Genomics, Siderophore Production, and Iron Scavenging Potential of Root Zone Soil Bacteria Isolated from 'Concord' Grape Vineyards.

Iron (Fe) deficiency in crop production is a worldwide problem which often results in chlorosis in grapevines, particularly in calcareous soils. Siderophores secreted by microorganisms and Strategy II plants can chelate Fe and other metals in soil solution, and siderophore-Fe complexes can then be utilized by plants and microbes. Plants may also shift rhizosphere conditions to favor siderophore-producing microbes, which can increase plant available Fe. Between-row cover crops (barley, rye, wheat, wheat/vetch) were planted as living mulch to address grapevine chlorosis by enhancing soil health …

Plasma membrane proteomics reveals mechanism of low potassium tolerance in two contrasting maize genotypes.

Potassium (K) deficiency is a major constraint on plant growth and crop productivity. To elucidate the genotypic mechanisms underlying maize adaptation to K deficiency, we comprehensively compared the physiological responses and 8-plex iTRAQ (4 biological replicates) based plasma membrane (PM) proteomes of two maize genotypes with contrasting K efficiency. Under low-K conditions, the K-efficient genotype (K-ef) maintained greater growth and root vitality and exhibited significantly higher K concentration and accumulation than the K inefficient genotype (K-inef). Quantitative plasma membrane (P
