The use of cryoablation in the electrophysiology lab provides some distinct advantages not seen with conventional radiofrequency ablation. While radiofrequency catheter ablation is very effective, it does not allow for prediction of success prior to full delivery of the energy. A retrospective study of monocular indirect argon laser retinal photocoagulation for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) was performed on 53 eyes of 36 premature infants, admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Juntendo hospital from Jan. 1988 to Dec. 1990. In animal experiment, cryotherapy was used in 1997 adult patients with acute or chronic low-back pain of various causes. The posterior ramus of certain lumbar nerve was frozen to -140 degrees, -180 degrees C. Through a specially made freezing needle punctured into the place, 1902 patients were treated for 1 time and the rest 2 or 3 times. 1742 patients (87.2%) got immediate relief and resumed pain-free movement right after cryotherapy. Urethral obstruction is a rare disease in women, and even more uncommon is the occurrence of acute urethral obstruction due to condylomata. This case report describes the course of one such case, unique for its progressive clinical evolution, the primary involvement of the lower urinary tract in the absence of either an obvious primary site or a history of sexual intercourse for more than 15 years, and its successful treatment with cryotherapy.

Changes in aqueous protein concentration (APC) in unilateral rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD) were investigated 1) prospectively in 40 patients who were undergoing scleral buckling surgery with cryotherapy and 2) retrospectively in another 40 patients who had undergone successful retinal reattachment more than 2 years previously. Before the surgery, APC in RD eyes was more than double that in the contralateral normal eyes. Four hundred and fifty patients were enrolled into a randomised clinical trial in a public sexually transmitted diseases clinic to evaluate the efficacy of podophyllin, cryotherapy, and electrodesiccation for treatment of external genital warts. Recent studies of genital wart therapy have evaluated laser surgery, interferon, and 5-fluorouracil. On the basis of considerations of efficacy, cost, adverse effects, and recurrence rates, cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen remains the recommended therapy for most sexually transmitted warts. None of the treatment methods eradicates the papillomavirus, and genital wart recurrences are seen with each method. The influence of treatment of genital warts on the natural course and sequelae of genital papillomavirus infection is unknown.

Experience has shown that the overwhelming majority of traumatic retinal detachments are rhegmatogenous in origin. Retinal breaks are predominantly located within the vitreous base region but may occur at sites of focal scleral impact or from posterior vitreous avulsion.
