Fifth disease (erythema infectiosum) has recently been linked to human parvovirus (HPV) infection. HPV is also capable of causing aplastic anemia, arthritis and perinatal complications, including hydrops fetalis and spontaneous abortion. Clinically suspected cases of HPV infection can now be confirmed serologically. IgM antibodies peak early in the course of infection and are usually undetectable by two months. New procedures, including HPV-specific DNA probes, are being used to confirm in utero infections.

Two cases of melanocytic lesion occurring in condylomata acuminata are described. In situ hybridization with human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA probes specific for 6b, 11, 16, 18 revealed positivity with HPV6 and 11, in the non-dysplastic condylomata, and HPV 18 positivity in the case showing severe dysplasia. The HPV localization was confined to the superficial parakeratotic zones, remote from the melanocytic proliferation. The relationship between human papillomavirus and the melanocytic lesions is discussed.

Three cases of primary cerebral lymphoma in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome were studied. Tumoral fragments taken at autopsy were frozen and studied by the Southern blot technique (SBT). The mitochondrial myopathies are a heterogeneous group of disorders some of which may be caused by mutations in the mitochondrial genome. Mitochondrial DNA from 10 patients with mitochondrial myopathy and their mothers was analysed using five restriction enzymes and 11 mitochondrial probes in bacteriophage M13. The localization of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genomes in nuclei of the human lymphoblastoid cell lines Raji, Jijoye, P3HR-1, Daudi and Ramos was investigated by in situ hybridization with biotinylated EBV DNA probes. BACKGROUND: DNA hypodiploidy is a unique and rare finding associated with aggressive behavior in solid tumors. Identifying the chromosomal changes underlying this feature may provide important information on the development and progression of these neoplasms.
METHODS: Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis using alpha-satellite probes for nine autosomes and the two sex chromosomes was performed on interphase cells from 27 solid tumors which had been shown to be DNA hypodiploid by flow cytometry. The chromosomal abnormalities were correlated with the DNA index and tumor subtypes.
