Dental eruption and exfoliation chronology in the ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

Substituting ferrets for rats and dogs as animal models for craniofacial research is favourable because of the similarity of many of the ferret's anatomical, metabolic and physiological features to those of man. Other advantages are cost-effectiveness and possibly less ethical controversy. However, information on the dental chronology of ferrets needs to be supplemented if this animal is to be promoted as an alternative model. Dental development was here examined in 16 ferrets (eight males, eight females) from three litters at between 12 and 90 days of age. Dental eruption and exfoliation were

Mandibular remodeling measured on cephalograms. 1. Osseous changes relative to superimposition on metallic implants.

We report the results of a study aimed at quantifying remodeling of mandibular surfaces in a sample of growing children who represent those usually treated by orthodontists in the mixed and early adult dentition. The sample, 31 patients with metallic implants of the Björk-type, was monitored at annual intervals between 8 1/2 and 15 1/2 years of age. (Maxillary remodeling changes for the sample have been reported earlier.) The present article reports findings concerning changes at condyle, gonion, menton, pogonion, and point B as identified on lateral cephalograms. Data are reported in the Fran

A mixed-bacteria ecological approach to understanding the role of the oral bacteria in dental caries causation: an alternative to Streptococcus mutans and the specific-plaque hypothesis.

For more than 100 years, investigators have tried to identify the bacteria responsible for dental caries formation and to determine whether their role is one of specificity. Frequent association of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Streptococcus mutans with caries activity gave credence to their being specific cariogens. However, dental caries occurrence in their absence, and the presence of other bacteria able to produce substantial amounts of acid from fermentable carbohydrate, provided arguments for non-specificity. In the 1940s, Stephan found that the mixed bacteria in dental plaque produced a

The Causal Effect of Supra- and Sub-Gingival Instrumentation on the Oral Microbiome of Elderly Periodontitis Patients Treated in Nursing Homes: Secondary Analysis of a Randomised Controlled Trial.

AIMS: Periodontitis among nursing home residents is increasing as more older adults retain their dentition. Evidence on the impact of periodontal therapy on their oral microbiota is limited. We aimed to assess the effect of outreach-based supra- and sub-gingival instrumentation on the periodontal microbiome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this secondary analysis of an RCT, 36 residents (mean age 85 ± 6 years) with periodontitis had been randomised to supra- and sub-gingival instrumentation (mean duration 14.3 ± 5.2 min) or a 3-month control. Supragingival and subgingival plaque samples were collec

LeFort III distraction in patients with syndromic craniosynostosis: Is overcorrection beneficial?

BACKGROUND: Patients with syndromic craniosynostosis often require LeFort III advancement surgery due to significant midface retrusion. As long-term outcome is imperative, this study aimed to investigate the effect of LeFort III and distraction osteogenesis with overcorrection. METHODS: Six consecutive patients with syndromic craniosynostosis and significant midface hypoplasia were enrolled. They underwent LeFort III osteotomy with over-distraction at an average age of 10.3 years. Longitudinal lateral cephalograms were collected at three time points of pre-operation (T0), early post-distracti

Naturally Occurring Secondary Renal Hyperparathyroidism and Fibrous Osteodystrophy in a Pet Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

Rabbits with end-stage kidney failure often develop hypercalcaemia and osteosclerosis. Secondary renal hyperparathyroidism and fibrous osteodystrophy can be experimentally induced in rabbits through nephrectomy and a low-calcium:high-phosphorus diet, but clinical case reports are rare. A thin, mixed-breed, neutered male rescue rabbit was brought to a veterinary clinic due to lameness of the right hind limb and gait difficulties. Radiographs showed severe osteodystrophy. Additionally, there was a displaced, ununited simple fracture in the right mid-femur and a healed simple fracture in the righ

Salivary microbiome and metabolome profiles associated with dental caries in Tibetan children from high-altitude regions.

This study investigated, for the first time, the salivary microbiome and metabolome profiles associated with dental caries in Tibetan children of mixed dentition residing in high-altitude areas. Moreover, a diagnostic model for caries was established by exploring the potential cariogenic mechanisms of identified biomarkers. Saliva samples were collected from 28 Tibetan children (aged 10.20 ± 0.67 years in the high caries [HC] group, n = 15; 10.38 ± 0.65 years in the caries-free [H] group, n = 13). Effect of Early Orthodontic Treatment on Long-Term Stability of Class II Malocclusions.

BACKGROUND: Class II malocclusions are a common orthodontic problem, often requiring comprehensive treatment to achieve proper occlusion and facial harmony. Early orthodontic intervention in the mixed dentition phase has been advocated to address these issues. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on a cohort of 150 patients with class II malocclusions who underwent early orthodontic treatment between the ages of 7 and 10 years. The treatment included fixed or removable appliances, headgear, and functional appliances, depending on individual needs. Records of their ini

Cephalometric variables used to predict the success of interceptive treatment with rapid maxillary expansion and face mask. A longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Prognosis is the main limitation of interceptive treatment of Class III malocclusions. The interceptive procedures of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and face mask therapy performed in early mixed dentition are capable of achieving immediate overcorrection and maintenance of facial and occlusal morphology for a few years. Individuals presenting minimal acceptable faces at growth completion are potential candidates for compensatory orthodontic treatment, while those with facial involvement should be submitted to orthodontic decompensation for orthognathic surgery. OBJECTIVES: To

Associations between fluorosis of permanent incisors and fluoride intake from infant formula, other dietary sources and dentifrice during early childhood.

OBJECTIVES: The authors describe associations between dental fluorosis and fluoride intakes, with an emphasis on intake from fluoride in infant formula. METHODS: The authors administered periodic questionnaires to parents to assess children's early fluoride intake sources from beverages, selected foods, dentifrice and supplements. They later assessed relationships between fluorosis of the permanent maxillary incisors and fluoride intake from beverages and other sources, both for individual time points and cumulatively using area-under-the-curve (AUC) estimates. The authors determined effects

Orthodontic treatment of a nine-year-old patient with hypophosphatemic rickets diagnosed since the age of two: A case report.

Hypophosphatemic rickets (HR) is a genetic disorder with various types of inheritance. It results mainly from defects in factors that control mineral ion homeostasis such as 1,25(OH)2D (Calcitriol) and FGF23 (Fibroblast Growth Factor 23). The existing bibliography regarding orthodontic treatment in patients with hypophosphatemic rickets is extremely limited. The aim of this case report is to describe the orthodontic treatment of a 9-year old Caucasian female patient suffering from HR. The patient presented a healthy late mixed dentition and periodontium. She suffered from a mild Class III maxi

To open or to close space--that is the missing lateral incisor question.

Developmentally absent permanent maxillary lateral incisors may be associated with several problems. The decision whether to open or to close the space should involve the patient/parent, orthodontist and restorative dentist. To optimize function and aesthetics, space should be opened using fixed appliances to accommodate an appropriate prosthesis. Implant-retained crowns offer several advantages, although adhesive bridges are more appropriate in certain circumstances. Removable partial dentures may be necessary in some instances. Where space opening is not feasible, practical or desirable, any

The long and winding road part 2. The CLP patient's journey, 0-21 years.

UNLABELLED: Patients with a cleft lip and palate (CLP) deformity require the highest standard of care that the NHS can provide and this requires multidisciplinary care from teams located in regional cleft centres. Care of these cases is from birth to adulthood and requires several phases of intervention, corresponding to the stages of facial and dental development. Management ideally starts pre-natally, following the initial diagnosis, and occasionally pre-surgical appliances are prescribed. The lip is ideally repaired within three months, followed by palate closure between 12 and 18 months. C

[Sequelae of dental trauma: forensic medical aspects].

Dental trauma is a frequent condition which may occur alone or in combination with craniofacial trauma and/or other injuries. Many factors influence the gravity of the trauma and subsequent prognosis including age, anterior state, trauma etiology, treatment and follow up. In order to establish a prudent provisional or definitive expertise, the medical expert must have a panoramic view of the trauma. Time should be taken to consolidate facts and estimate prejudices on sound evidence. In certain cases outcome can be predicted. The medical expert should provide advice and counselling both for the

Publication Bias in Epidemiological Studies of Malocclusions in Mexican Children and Teenagers: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the publication bias of the reported prevalence of malocclusions in Mexican children and adolescents. BACKGROUND: Publication bias determination is crucial in a systematic review, helping to ensure the conclusions' validity and reliability. Nevertheless, without accurate knowledge of disease prevalence and patterns, the health system risks inefficiency, inequity, and failure to meet the population's needs. On the other hand, malocclusions can impair proper chewing efficiency, contributing to digestive alterations, and nutritional deficiencies among other functional, ps
