Perinatal mental illness is a significant complication of pregnancy and the postpartum period. These disorders include depression, anxiety disorders, and postpartum psychosis, which usually manifests as bipolar disorder. Perinatal depression and anxiety are common, with prevalence rates for major and minor depression up to almost 20% during pregnancy and the first 3 months postpartum. Postpartum blues are a common but lesser manifestation of postpartum affective disturbance. Perinatal psychiatric disorders impair a woman's function and are associated with suboptimal development of her offsprin

BACKGROUND: Pregnant people are vulnerable to new or worsening mental health conditions. This study aims to describe prevalence and course of symptomatic depression and anxiety in pregnancy during the pre-vaccine COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study of pregnant individuals with known or suspected COVID-19. Participants completed Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and Generalized-Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) questionnaires at 34weeks gestational age, 6-8weeks postpartum, and 6months postpartum. Prevalence of symptomatic depression and anxiety at each visit was

OBJECTIVE: Insomnia and poor sleep quality are frequently reported by perinatal women. Both are noted to increase the risk of postpartum depression, with less known about their association with postpartum anxiety. This study sought to assess whether perinatal sleep disturbances predicted depression and anxiety symptoms across each month of the first 6 months postpartum in women with a history of depression.
METHODS: Pregnant women without active depression at enrollment ( N = 159), 18 to 45 years of age, were recruited. In late pregnancy and for up to 6 months postpartum, women completed mont

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety disorders exhibit comorbidity, and the same relationships have been observed in postpartum samples. The tripartite model posits that anxiety and depression overlap due to shared and unique symptom components. The present study tested whether a one-factor model, or a three-factor model consistent with the tripartite model, provided a better fit to anxiety and depression symptoms in a postpartum sample.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 663 postpartum psychiatric inpatients who completed self-reported questionnaires assessing symptoms of anxiety and depression.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal anxiety and depression have been linked to adverse childhood neurodevelopment, potentially through cortisol-induced epigenetic changes. Postpartum depression is also associated with neurodevelopmental delays, possibly via altered parental attachment. While prenatal and postpartum mental health may be correlated, their relative and independent impacts on offspring neurodevelopment remain unclear. This study examines the effects of prenatal and postpartum anxiety and/or depression on neurodevelopmental delay at 24 months.
METHODS: In a nationwide prospective cohort from the

BACKGROUND: The postpartum period is a vulnerable time for the development of depression. While perinatal depression has been well studied, intrusive thoughts related to the infant and classic obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms (e.g. chequering, ordering and cleaning) are also common in the postpartum and less well understood.
OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the associations among depressive symptoms, intrusive thoughts, and OC symptoms and their relation to the quality of the mother-infant relationship, particularly in the realm of maternal responsiveness.
METHODS: Participants (N

Postpartum depression is a serious problem not only for mothers, but also for their children and families. Evidence is scarce on the effectiveness of couple-targeted antenatal interventions aimed at preventing postpartum depression in Asia. Therefore, we implemented an antenatal parenting support program from Australia ("empathy program") at three sites in Japan, and assessed the characteristics of participating couples and changes in their mental health indicators before and after the program (during pregnancy and 6 weeks postpartum, respectively). In this program, participant couples discuss

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health disorders affect maternal and child health significantly. It can manifest as postpartum blues, postnatal depression or a more severe form as postpartum psychosis. Mostly, postpartum mental health disorders remain undiagnosed and untreated and there is paucity of data on the true prevalence of these disorders in the community.
METHODS: The present study has been conducted as a community-based cross-sectional study on postpartum and post-abortion women in the sub-Himalayan hilly area of India. The main objective of the study was to know the prevalence of peri

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is a serious condition for women after childbirth. Although its etiology is unclear, one potentially important predictive variable that has received little attention is maternal sleep deprivation. The objective of this study was to examine relationships among infant sleep patterns, maternal fatigue, and the development of postpartum depression in women with no major depressive symptomatology at 1 week postpartum.
METHODS: As part of a population-based postpartum depression study, 505 women who had an Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) score < 13 at 1

BACKGROUND: The period during pregnancy to postnatal is vital for developing of mother-infant bond. A mother suffering from depression may have issues with forming effective bonding. An evaluation of whether perinatal depression influences mother-infant bonding has scarcely been studied in Kenya.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between perinatal depression and impaired maternal bonding among postpartum mothers.
METHODOLOGY: A total of 225 postpartum mothers aged between 18-49 years at 6-12 weeks postpartum at a ratio of 1:2 (cases: controls) were selected. Women who

BACKGROUND: Postpartum care is critical to preventing pregnancy-associated deaths. Virtual modes of care have potential to improve access to postpartum care; however, the impact on postpartum screenings for cigarette smoking, emotional/physical abuse, and depression is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare receipt of these screenings between mothers who received any virtual postpartum care and those whose care was exclusively in-person.
STUDY DESIGN: Using the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System Phase 8 data, we estimated receipt of postpartum care screenings f

OBJECTIVE: The growing literature on the intergenerational transmission of childhood adversity highlights the need to identify potential mechanisms underlying the relationship between maternal and infant adversity. This study examines prenatal and postpartum depressive symptoms as mediators between maternal ACEs and postpartum infant experiences of adversity.
METHODS: A diverse sample of 168 low-income, pregnant women (39% white) were recruited from urban prenatal clinics and followed for one-year post childbirth. Maternal childhood adversity and prenatal depressive symptoms were assessed dur

This study aims to explore the effects of intimate partner violence during pregnancy (p-IPV) on postpartum depression among women in central Vietnam. p-IPV was defined among 150 women aged 18 years and older in the third trimester of their pregnancy. Baseline data was collected between February and May 2019, and then those women were followed up to 3-5 months after childbirth to assess depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Data collection was completed in September 2019. Relative risk was estimated to identify the effect of p-IPV on maternal postpartum depression. Twenty

INTRODUCTION: Limited evidence exists on the association between mode of birth and long-term depression and/or severe anxiety in mothers. We aimed to examine the association between mode of birth and depression and/or severe anxiety by 14 years postpartum.
METHODS: We used data from the Millennium Cohort Study. Data on mode of birth were collected when mothers were 9 months postpartum, and categorized as spontaneous vaginal birth (VB), assisted VB, induced VB, emergency cesarean section (CS), planned CS, and CS after induction. Depression/severe anxiety were collected as one variable and self

OBJECTIVE: Diabetes is frequently linked with depression, and both conditions are common complications during pregnancy. However, research findings exploring the relationship between diabetes mellitus in pregnancy (DMP) and perinatal depression (PND) have been inconsistent. Thus, this study seeks to examine the association between DMP and PND in a prospective population-based cohort.
METHODS: Women aged 18 to 48 years ( n = 4459) were identified from the Biology, Affect, Stress, Imaging and Cognition study. The diagnosis of DMP was based on International Classification of Diseases code O24 fr

BACKGROUND: Perinatal (antenatal and postpartum) depression impacts approximately 12% of mothers. Perinatal depression can impact everyday functioning for mothers, and the relationship with, and development of, their children. The purpose of this study was to investigate depression trajectories from the antenatal period through 54-months postpartum and associations with child body mass index at 54-months postpartum.
METHODS: This study applied latent growth modeling to the Growing Up in New Zealand study, which is a longitudinal pregnancy cohort study that provides nationally representative-l

An increase in negative mood is common during the postpartum period. Two related but distinct factors can increase their risk: infant sleep duration and maternal sleep quality. This study evaluated the dynamic interplay among infant sleep duration, maternal sleep quality, and symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety. This prospective observational pilot study included pregnant women (N = 168) aged 18-45 years, with a history of depression. Maternal sleep quality, mood symptoms, and infant sleep duration were collected monthly after delivery up to 6 months postpartum. Random intercept cros

Objective/Background: Insomnia and depression are disorders that affect many perinatal women and that often are interrelated. The present study aimed to examine concurrent and prospective associations between mid-pregnancy insomnia and depression during mid-pregnancy and 8 weeks postpartum. Furthermore, differences in depression and in the sleep-related characteristics insomnia, chronotype, and sleep efficiency were explored between the two time points (mid-pregnancy versus 8 weeks postpartum), and between primiparous and multiparous participants.Participants/Methods: The study was part of the

BACKGROUND: Depression during the perinatal period is associated with negative outcomes for both mothers and children, including higher rates of chronic depression in mothers and physical, emotional, and cognitive issues in children. This study aimed to determine how the stressors of the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to prenatal and postpartum depressive symptoms among a sample of peripartum mothers who gave birth during the pandemic. This study also examined risk factors for postpartum depression, including prenatal depressive symptoms, demographic characteristics, timing of birth during the
