Etiology of Childhood Infectious Diarrhea in a Developed Region of China: Compared to Childhood Diarrhea in a Developing Region and Adult Diarrhea in a Developed Region.

In China, great differences in economy, social characteristics and hygiene exist between developing and developed regions. A comparative study of infectious diarrhea between two regions was needed. Three groups of diarrheal patients were collected: children ≤5 year-olds from Beijing (developed region) and Henan Province (developing region), and adults over 18 year-olds from Beijing. A questionnaire was used to survey and feces samples were examined for 16 enteropathogens. We enrolled 1422 children and 1047 adults from developed region and 755 children from developing region. Virus positive rat

Knowledge, attitude and practices of mothers regarding home management of acute diarrhoea in Sunsari, Nepal.

In Nepal, 45,000 children less than five years age die due to diarrhoea annually. Home management of diarrhoea is the hallmark of control of diarrhoeal diseases program in Nepal, which also aims to increase the correct use of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) by mothers, so mothers play a great role in the reducing the morbidity and mortality of children. The aim of the study was to assess knowledge, attitude and practices of the mother regarding home management of acute diarrhea in their children. The list of 330 children on Plan 'A' treatment was prepared at 11 peripheral health institutions o

Extreme short bowel syndrome in a full-term neonate--a case report.

Massive small bowel resection often leads to long-term parenteral nutrition. The authors present a term-born, 3-day-old boy with midgut volvulus in whom only 17 cm of small bowel was left after resection. This patient was weaned from parenteral nutrition after 7 months. Temporary parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis was treated with ursodeoxycholic acid.

Acute childhood diarrhoea and maternal time allocation in the northern central Sierra of Peru.

Interventions to improve child health depend, at least implicitly, on changing maternal knowledge and behaviour and a reallocation of maternal time. There have been few studies, however, of the time cost involved in the adoption of new health technologies and even fewer that examine changes in maternal activities in response to child illness. The present study examines maternal daytime activities and investigates changes that occur when children are ill. We examine the impact of acute childhood diarrhoea episodes on the activity patterns of the mother/caretaker in this setting. The results sho

Feeding, illness and nutritional status of young children in rural Gujarat.

Eighty children, aged 0-18 months, were studied over a period of 6 months. Information was obtained from monthly interviews with mothers, when the children were also weighed. Feeding practices, incidence of illness and weight gain were described. The children who were nutritionally most at risk were identified. The average weight of the children was 1 kg less than the NCHS international reference by 3 months, 1.7 kg by 9 months. The majority of mothers did not introduce foods other than breast milk before 9 months. The children from labourers' households gained less weight between 3 and 6 mont

GNAI2 activating variants and MAGIS syndrome: long-term endocrine and growth outcome.

CONTEXT: Germline activating variants in the GNAI2 gene have recently been associated with MAGIS syndrome, characterized by midline malformations of the brain, anterior pituitary gland dysfunction, growth retardation, immunodysregulation, and skeletal defects. However, the full phenotypic spectrum, particularly regarding endocrine dysfunction, remains incompletely defined. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report on a 9.5-year-old male presenting with MAGIS syndrome due to a de novo GNAI2 (NM_002070.4):c.544A>C, p.(Thr182Pro) variant. He initially presented at 17 months with short stature and hypopituitar

Rational Use of Elimination Diets in Infants and Toddlers: Navigating the Overlap Between Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI) and Food Allergy-A Narrative Review.

Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) are the most common cause of gastrointestinal symptoms in infants and toddlers. The overall prevalence in the pediatric population aged 0-48 months is approximately one in four children. DGBI symptoms such as excessive crying, regurgitation, constipation or altered bowel movements can often mimic or overlap with food allergy (FA) manifestations, especially non-IgE-mediated allergy, thus posing a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. As a consequence, prolonged empiric elimination diets are often initiated in DGBI management despite limited evidence-bas

Cutaneous manifestations of immune dysregulation, polyendocrinopathy, enteropathy, X-linked (IPEX) syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Immune dysregulation, polyendocrinopathy, enteropathy, X-linked (IPEX) syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by neonatal autoimmune enteropathy, diabetes and thyroiditis, food allergies and skin rash. IPEX syndrome is caused by mutations in FOXP3, a master control gene of regulatory T cells (Tregs), resulting in absent or dysfunctional Tregs. Data in the literature are scarce and the cutaneous manifestations are rarely depicted. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the frequency and characteristics of cutaneous manifestations found in IPEX. METHODS: Retrospective single-centre study of a

Association of vitamin A and zinc status with altered intestinal permeability: analyses of cohort data from northeastern Brazil.

To examine the association of intestinal barrier function with vitamin A deficiency and whether supplementation of micronutrients improves intestinal function and/or linear growth, height-for-age z-score (HAZ), concentrations of serum retinol and zinc, and intestinal permeability were determined in a cross-sectional sample of 75 children in northeastern Brazil. Effects of vitamin A and supplementation of zinc on intestinal permeability and growth were also determined comparing results before and after treatment in 20 children and age-matched controls. Lactulose:mannitol (L/M) permeability rati
