Clinical symptoms in fibromyalgia are associated to overweight and lipid profile.

In order to analyze the association between body mass index (BMI), lipid profile and clinical symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia, we assessed BMI levels, lipid profile and its association with clinical symptoms in 183 patients with fibromyalgia. The patients were evaluated using tender points, FIQ and Visual Analogue Scales of pain (VAS). Serum lipid profile analysis (total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, LDL and VLDL), and biochemical parameters were measured in the biochemistry laboratory. The BMI distribution of the nonobese, overweight and obese patients' groups were relatively even wi

Efficacy of intragastric balloon in obese Egyptian patients and the value of extended liquid diet period in mounting the weight loss.

UNLABELLED: Abstract Background: The surgical management of morbid obesity is faced by several challenges. Alternative therapeutic strategies could have an important role in the perioperative risk reduction. The BioEnterics(®) intragastric balloon (BIB) (Inamed Health, Santa Barbara, CA) has been described as being effective in weight reduction and is used as a bridge before bariatric surgery. This study examined the efficacy of BIB in obese Egyptian patients and the value of the extended low caloric liquid diet program in weight loss. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of a prospec

An acceptance-based behavioral intervention for weight loss: a pilot study.

On average, participants in behavioral weight-loss interventions lose 8 kilograms (kg) at 6 months, but there is marked variability in outcomes with some participants losing little or no weight. Individuals with difficulties with internal disinhibition (i.e., eating in response to emotions or thoughts) typically lose less weight in such programs and may require an innovative, specialized approach. This pilot study examined the preliminary acceptability and efficacy of a 24-week acceptance-based behavioral intervention for weight loss among overweight and obese adults reporting difficulty with

Rate of weight loss can be predicted by patient characteristics and intervention strategies.

BACKGROUND: Although dietary weight-loss counseling usually employs a 500 to 1,000 kcal/day energy deficit to induce weight loss of 0.5 to 1 kg/week, this rate of weight loss is rarely achieved in research settings. Biological factors, such as changes in metabolic rate, are partly responsible, but would only account for a small deviation from expected weight loss. There must be other factors, behavioral or related to study design and implementation, that affect the rate of weight loss observed. OBJECTIVE: To examine factors that influence the rate of weight loss obtained in clinical studies.

[Definition and classification of hyperuricemia].

Hyperuricemia (serum urate level >7 mg/dL) is caused by accelerated generation of uric acid and/or impaired excretion in the kidney. It is classified into three types (overproduction, underexcretion and mixed types). The typical cases with the type of uric acid overproduction are hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyl transferase deficiency due to HPRT gene abnormality, excessive consumption of purine-rich diet, and cytolysis induced by chemotherapy for blood neoplasm, those with the type of underexcretion are familial juvenile hyperuricemic nephropathy due to uromodulin gene abnormality and abru

Increase in depression symptoms with weight loss: association with glucose homeostasis and thyroid function.

The purpose of this study was to assess the potential impact of weight loss up to a state of plateau on symptoms of depression. Eleven obese men (mean body mass index (BMI)=33.4 kg.m(-2), mean age=38 y) participated in this repeated-measures, within-subjects, clinical intervention. They were subjected to a weight-loss program that consisted of a supervised diet and exercise clinical intervention. The phases investigated were (i) baseline; (ii) after 5+/-1 kg loss of body mass (phase 1); (iii) after 10+/-1 kg weight loss (phase 2); and (iv) at resistance to further weight loss (plateau). Effects of short-term hypocaloric diet on sympatho-vagal interaction assessed by spectral analysis of heart rate and blood pressure variability during stress tests in obese hypertensive patients.

We examined the effects of a short-term low-calorie diet on the activity of the autonomic nervous system during stress tests in obese patients with hypertension by analysis of heart rate and blood pressure variability. Eighteen obese inpatients with essential hypertension were given a regular-calorie diet (1,600 kcal, NaCl 7 g) for 4 days, and then a low-calorie diet (1,100 kcal, NaCl 7 g) for 11 days. During both the regular-calorie diet and low-calorie diet, power spectral analysis of heart rate and blood pressure variability at rest and during mental arithmetic test, deep breathing test, is

[Effect of weight loss on blood pressure].

The treatment of arterial hypertension is based on changes in lifestyle and above all weight loss. The expected reduction of systolic and diastolic blood pressure through weight loss is greater the higher the starting blood pressure. For patients who are not successful through calorie reduction and sport, weight loss can be enhanced with pharmacotherapy. Various substance-dependent blood pressure reactions have been observed that must be monitored. The blood pressure of patients who have undergone surgical intervention for weight loss decreases significantly to the upper normal range.

Responses to dietary macronutrient distribution of overweight rats under restricted feeding.

Changes in protein and amino acid balance after energy-restricted feeding have scarcely been studied, although it has been suggested that protein utilization may depend on the macronutrient composition of the restricted diet. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of dietary fat quality and content, during an energy-restricted regime, on body composition and protein metabolism. Therefore, diet-induced overweight rats were divided into three dietary groups: one group was fed on a control diet ad libitum (control) and the other two groups were fed energy-restricted diets (about 60

[Very-low-calorie diet in treatment of morbidly obese patient with diabetes mellitus type 2].

A 40-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, central obesity (body mass index: 40 kg/m2) and mixed hyperlipidaemia was treated with oral hypoglycaemic, antihypertensive and hypolipidaemic drugs as well as with intramuscular insulin. She kept gaining weight and developed hiatus hernia with regurgitation. Treatment was changed to a very low caloric diet during 9 months. She lost 18 kg of body weight and all drugs could be discontinued, as she became normoglycaemic, normotensive and normolipidaemic. Obesity is a risk factor for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Long-term maintenance of weight loss after a very-low-calorie diet: a randomized blinded trial of the efficacy and tolerability of sibutramine.

BACKGROUND: Very-low-calorie diets are a well established method to achieve substantial short-term weight loss in obese patients, but long-term maintenance of the weight loss is very disappointing. A combined very-low-calorie diet and pharmacologic approach could be an effective means of prolonging its benefits. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eligible patients had a body-mass index greater than 30 kg/m2; those who lost 6 kg or more during a 4-week treatment with a very-low-calorie diet were randomly assigned to 1 year of treatment with sibutramine (10 mg) or identical placebo. RESULTS: In an intentio

Self-concept as a factor in the quality of diets of adolescent girls.

The effect of self-concept on the quality of diets of adolescent girls was investigated. Scores for self-concept as measured by the Tennessee Self Concept Scale (TSCS) and fat area values were obtained from 160 15-year-old girls. Twenty-four-hour dietary recall interviews were conducted with a random subsample of 40 girls. Mean dietary adequacy ratios (MARs) were calculated to assess dietary quality. Girls in this study had larger arm fat areas than did their national counterparts. Mean intakes of energy and nine nutrients met or exceeded their respective RDAs except for vitamin A, calcium, an

Changes of some lipid and lipid peroxidation characteristics in obese people as a result of a low energy diet.

In blood samples of 54 obese persons (13 men, 41 women) some lipid components, malondialdehyde (MDA), and the activities of free radical protecting enzymes superoxide-dismutase (SOD) and glutathione-peroxidase (GSHpx), were determined before and after a seven-day slimming diet of 2.1 MJ/day. Body weight, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, and HDL-3-cholesterol all decreased, total cholesterol increased after the seven days hospitalization. After continuing the slimming diet (5.0-6.3 MJ/day) at home, HDL-2-cholesterol increased and total cholesterol returned to the initial value after three months

Magnesium and methionine deprivation affect the response of rats to boron deprivation.

A series of nine experiments were done to obtain further evidence that boron might be involved in major mineral metabolism (Ca, P, and Mg), thus indicating that boron is an essential nutrient for animals. Eight factorially arranged experiments of 6-10 wk durations were done with weanling Sprague-Dawley male rats. One factorially arranged experiment was done with weanling spontaneously hypertensive rats. The variables in each experiment were dietary boron supplements of 0 and 3 micrograms g, and dietary magnesium supplements of either 200 (Experiments 1-3) or 100 (Experiments 4-9) and 400 micro

Contrasting short- and long-term effects of weight loss on lipoprotein levels.

The short- and long-term effects of weight loss on high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels were examined in 42 women who completed a 14-session behavioral weight-loss program. Lipid values were determined from samples taken before treatment, after treatment, and at six-month follow-up. There were significant changes in plasma lipid levels, but the short- and long-term effects differed. Both total and LDL cholesterol levels decreased during treatment and remained lower at follow-up. However, HDL cholesterol level and the HDL/LDL ratio did not change d

Nitrogen and sodium balance and sympathetic-nervous-system activity in obese subjects treated with a low-calorie protein or mixed diet.

Seven obese subjects were placed on a 400-kcal protein diet and on an isocaloric mixed diet (50 per cent protein and 50 per cent carbohydrate), three to 5 1/2 weeks for each diet. Despite twofold to fivefold increases in ketone levels in the blood and urine with the protein diet, net nitrogen balance was no different from that with the mixed diet (-2.1 +/- 0.9 vs. -2.6 +/- 0.4 g per day; mean +/- S.E.M.). However, net sodium loss with the protein diet (-382 +/- 117 mmol) was significantly greater than with the mixed diet (-25 +/- 105 mmol; P less than 0.02). Furthermore, maximal orthostatic de

Hypodipsia-hypernatremia syndrome.

The pathogenesis of the rare hypernatremia, usually described in the literature as "neurogenic" or "essential" hypernatremia, consists of defective thirst mechanism either alone or in combination with impaired osmoregulation of ADH release. As etiology, disturbances of the neoplastic, vascular and degenerative type and malformations in the hypothalamic area are known. In patients with the hypodipsia-hypernatremia syndrome, dysfunction of the anterior pituitary lobe, obesity, abnormal regulation of body temperature, psychomotor retardation and episodic muscular weakness are frequently encounter
