Systematic Nutritional Clinical Assessment (SyNCA): Instrument Development, Delphi Protocol for Content, and Semantic Validation.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is a common complication in patients with chronic diseases, often exacerbated by clinical factors and increased metabolic demands. In individuals affected by Decompensated Chronic Liver Disease (DCLD), fluid retention, such as oedema and ascites, can hinder accurate nutritional assessment, leading to underdiagnosis or misdiagnosis of weight loss and malnutrition. The present study describes the development and validation of a novel tool for Systematic Nutritional Clinical Assessment (SyNCA), including its content, semantic, and construct validity. METHODS: In Phase 1,

From Sustainability Consciousness to Sustainable Dietary Behaviours: The Mediating Roles of Food Waste and Food Preference.

INTRODUCTION: In shaping sustainable dietary habits, the structural dynamics of the food system may play a role as significant as the individual's cognitive processes. This study aims to examine how sustainability awareness among Turkish adults relates to their dietary behaviours and to identify the mediating mechanisms involved in this relationship. In doing so, it seeks to contribute to the identification of potential leverage points within the food system. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted with the participation of 784 healthy adults living in Izmir. The study examined the

Changes in Components of Sarcopenia Diagnostic Criteria Throughout the Surgical Treatment of Oesophagogastric Cancer Surgery: A Prospective Longitudinal Study.

INTRODUCTION: Low skeletal muscle is prevalent and associated with poorer outcomes after oesophagogastric (OG) cancer surgery. However, sarcopenia, including strength and function, is less commonly assessed. Therefore, we aimed to describe the prevalence of sarcopenia and changes in diagnostic criteria within 1 year of OG cancer surgery. METHODS: This prospective observational study included OG cancer surgery patients from 2018 to 2021. Body composition was assessed using computed tomography (CT) and bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS). Low CT-defined skeletal muscle index (SMI) and myosteatosis

"Food as Friend or Enemy": A Qualitative Study of Motivations Underlying Restrictive Dietary Practices in Fibromyalgia.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the absence of official dietary guidelines for fibromyalgia, many patients adopt restrictive diets in an attempt to alleviate symptoms. Understanding their motivations and experiences is essential to inform patient-centred care. METHODS: This qualitative study included 19 individuals with fibromyalgia who reported following restrictive diets. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using phenomenological thematic analysis. RESULTS: An overarching theme, "Fibromyalgia in the Fabric of Self", captured how the condition shaped participants' iden

Shifting Nutrition Paradigms: Changing Attitudes Towards Diet and Body Perceptions Among People With CF in the Era of Highly Effective Modulators.

INTRODUCTION: People with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) have historically been counselled to eat a high-energy, high-fat diet to prevent malnutrition. The widespread availability of novel drug therapy has led to increased weight and body composition changes in this population, necessitating dietary and lifestyle changes to promote optimal health and well-being. The objective of our study was to understand the attitudes, perspectives, and practices related to nutrition issues in the context of elexacaftor-tezacaftor-ivacaftor (ETI) use. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with PwCF on

Food-Based Strategies for Stunting: A Scoping Review of Functional Ready-to-Eat and Ready-to-Cook Foods.

Stunting, a chronic form of malnutrition characterised by impaired linear growth, remains a significant global public health concern. While supplementation programmes have shown potential to improve growth outcomes, long-term implementation may be constrained by poor adherence, high costs and limited sustainability. Increasing reliance on ready-to-eat (RTE) and ready-to-cook (RTC) foods in low- and middle-income countries highlights the potential of nutrient-dense food-based approaches that align with existing dietary practices. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesise existing evidence

Key Sources of Information and Support for Adults With Coeliac Disease: Coeliac Associations, Dietitians, Social Media and Cookbooks.

INTRODUCTION: There is variable and often inadequate access to dietitians with expertise in coeliac disease (CeD) and limited data on where patients access support for their only treatment: adhering to a gluten-free diet. This study aimed to provide an up-to-date report of where adults with CeD source useful information. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was undertaken during 2024. The survey was designed by specialist dietitians and a gastroenterologist. Questions addressed diagnosis, demographics, sources of gluten‑free diet information, their perceived usefulness, and exposure to in

Limited Availability and Higher Cost of Gluten-Free Foods Continue in the United Kingdom: A Comparative Follow-Up Over More Than a Decade.

BACKGROUND: Coeliac disease requires strict lifelong adherence to a gluten-free diet, although adherence is challenged by the limited availability and higher cost of gluten-free foods. The demand for gluten-free foods has increased over recent years, yet its impact on availability and cost is unknown. This study aims to assess the availability and cost of gluten-free food across diverse retail outlets and compare changes over 11 years. METHODS: Replicating the same methodology as our previous study in 2010, the availability and cost of 20 foods (10 wheat-based, 10 everyday foods) were assesse

Defining Cachexia in Children With Cancer in the United States: Developing a Framework to Inform Clinical and Research Practice.

BACKGROUND: Cancer cachexia describes the muscle and weight loss, anorexia, and physical impairment common in certain adult cancers. No formal criteria exist to define paediatric cancer cachexia, making its clinical recognition and impact largely unknown. Using established undernutrition guidelines, criteria were developed to identify potential cachexia in children with cancer based on standardised anthropometric measures or diagnostic codes. METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results and Optum Electronic Health Records databases were used to estimate prevalence and incidence ra

Do Children Who Were Preschool Picky Eaters Eat Different Foods at School Lunch When Aged 13 Years Than Their Non-Picky Peers?

BACKGROUND: Picky eating behaviour is characterised by an unwillingness to eat familiar foods, try new foods, and/or strong food preferences. Prevalence peaks at about 3 years of age and usually declines during school years but behavioural characteristics may persist. Parental pressure may influence this. Our aim was to assess food choices in a school setting, away from the family environment, of 13-year-old children who were preschool picky eaters compared with those who were never picky eaters. METHODS: Children were recruited at birth in south-west England and followed to age 13 years. Chi

Unlocking the Vitamin Puzzle: Investigating Levels in People With Alzheimer's Disease Versus Healthy Controls Through Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis.

The progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is intricately tied to the impairment of neurons, crucial for neurological functions. Despite extensive research, the precise mechanism underlying AD development remains elusive due to its multifaceted aetiology. Vitamin deficiency has emerged as a notable contributor to AD onset and progression, exerting a significant influence on brain function. To explore this link, we conducted a thorough review using PubMed, Web of Science and MEDLINE databases to gather literature on average vitamin concentrations in people with AD and healthy controls. Prevalence of Emotional and Binge Eating Among Patients With Obesity Attending a Specialist Weight Management Service for Bariatric Surgery in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Emotional eating (EE) is a tendency to consume food in response to positive or negative emotions, leading to obesity and an increased Body Mass Index (BMI). Evidence supports the positive association between EE and binge eating disorder (BED), but little is known about its prevalence among patients referred for bariatric surgery and the psychological characteristics of this patient population. We aim to examine (i) the prevalence of binge eating and EE, (ii) its association with the prevalence of anxiety, depression, diabetes and hypertension and (iii) the correlation between anxie
