With recent technological progress, MRI can now reliably explore the digestive tract. Gastrointestinal MRI can map small intestine involvement in Crohn disease, with no irradiation in young patients. In addition, MRI provides supporting arguments for inflammatory or fibrous involvement of the intestine. MRI of anoperineal fistulae is useful in the preoperative stage to plan surgical treatment so as to reduce the recurrence rate of complex fistulae or recurring fistulae. In rectal cancer, MRI is the best examination to evaluate perirectal fascia for choosing neoadjuvant treatment.

The dual oxidase (Duox)2 flavoprotein is strongly expressed in the thyroid gland, where it plays a critical role in the synthesis of thyroid hormones by providing thyroperoxidase with H2O2. DUOX2 mRNA was recently detected by RT-PCR and in-situ hybridization experiments in other tissues, such as rat colon and rat and human epithelial cells from the salivary excretory ducts and rectal glands. We report two cases of digestive/intra-abdominal PEComa. The first lesion developed in the caecum of a 36-year-old woman, the second in the pararectal region of a 35-year-old woman. The first tumor was formed from spindle cells arranged in fascicles, the second contained predominantly epithelioid cells with prominent nucleoli. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells expressed smooth muscle actin and melanocyte markers (HMB45), S-100 protein and CD117 were negative. Based on the morphologic aspect and, above all, on the immunohistochemical study the diagnosis of PEComa was retained for both lesions.

We demonstrate a patient with a fistula between the gallbladder and the small intestine combined with a gallstone ileus of the small bowel, diagnosed by ultrasound. Plain abdominal X-ray only revealed small bowel obstruction. All the typical diagnostic criteria of a biliodigestive fistula could be detected by ultrasound. The patient was operated and discharged a few days later. We demonstrate that biliodigestive fistulas can be diagnosed by ultrasound.

The authors reviewed experience gained over a 20-year period of asplenia or polysplenia syndrome, focusing on patients with associated digestive tract disorders (DTDs). One hundred cases of upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage in peruvian highlanders were studied at a hospital in La Oroya (3850 meters above the sea level). On admission in all of them an esophagogastroduodenal fiberscope was performed to establish the diagnosis. Most of them were males (98%), between 30-39 years of age (38%) and presented at the same time hematemesis and melena (64%). After bleeding in 72% the hemoglobin was over 14 g%. Upper digestive bleeding caused by an isolated gastric hemangioma is a rather rare occurrence, even in cases of Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome. The case reported here, which brings to 40 the number reported in the world literature, is that of a 68-year-old patient who presented with upper digestive bleeding. Neurofibromatosis (Von Recklinghausen's disease) is uninherited as an autosomal dominant trait. It is characterised by the development of tumors in diverse sites, which may be benign or malignant. The case of a 39 year old woman with Von Recklinghausen's disease is discussed. She presented with a 3 year history of episodes of melaena and iron deficient anaemia. Mesenteric angiography demonstrated a hypervascular tumour in the jejunum. It was surgically excised with an anatomopathological diagnosis of neurofibroma.

A 27 month epidemiological survey of cryptosporidiosis in stools was conducted in 288 Gabonese children aged between 0 and 2 years (mean 10.2 months).
