Fishes, unlike most other vertebrate groups, continue to add sensory hair cells to their ears for much of their lives. However, it is not clear whether the addition ever stops or how the addition of sensory cells impacts hearing ability. In this article, we tested both questions using the zebrafish, Danio rerio. Our results not only have important implications for understanding the consequences of adding sensory receptors, but these results for normal zebrafish also serve as valuable baseline information for future studies of select mutations on the ear and hearing of this species. Our results

Following unilateral inner ear lesion, astrocytes undergo hypertrophy in the deafferented vestibular and cochlear nuclei as shown by an increase in the level of glial fibrillary acid. The present study extends our understanding of vestibular and cochlear system plasticity by examining microglial changes in these deafferented nuclei. The microglial reaction was studied 1, 2, 4, 8, 14, 21, 28 and 42 days following the lesion with a monoclonal OX-42 antibody and lectins (Griffonia simplicifolia, B4 isolectin) labelled with horseradish peroxidase or fluorescein. The deafferented nuclei were also e

By examining 218 albino guinea pigs, electrophysiological methods were used to investigate the effects of low frequency ultrasound at moderate sound pressure levels after long-term exposure to the inner ear. From 10 kHz to 28 kHz, low frequency ultrasound below 100 dB SPL induced significant changes in cochlear microphonics, elevated thresholds and decreased maximum output voltage of action potentials and decreased absolute values of negative potentials of the endocochlear potentials.

This study investigated congenital anomalies occurring in the middle and the inner ears, with particular attention to their features, localizations, and frequencies. One hundred human temporal bones obtained from 73 individuals, aged 31 gestational weeks to 39 years, each of whom had anomalies of the middle ear and/or inner ear, were used for this study. The temporal bones had been removed at autopsy, fixed, dehydrated, embedded in celloidin, and sectioned horizontally or vertically at 20 microns. Every 10th horizontal section or every 20th vertical section was stained with hematoxylin and eos

Many drugs have a site of action within the inner ear. The list includes therapeutic, diagnostic and ototoxic agents. Therapeutic agents are most useful in cases of infections, endolymphatic hydrops, vascular insufficiency, vertigo of peripheral origin, autoimmune disease, otosclerosis (otospongiosis), sudden hearing loss and tinnitus. For infections, the most widely used anti-microbial agents are the penicillins and cephalosporins. There are no antiviral agents that have been proven useful for inner ear viral infections. However, steroids have been of some value for controlling some of the se

From a series of patients undergoing routine radiographic examination, 112 temporal bones with a high jugular fossa were selected. Among these, 43 jugular bulb diverticula were found. The structures affected by a high fossa or diverticulum were recorded and correlated to the clinical symptoms of the patient. The vestibule was suspected to be affected in five patients. Two of these patients had tinnitus and vertigo, and three had hearing loss. In one of the latter the hearing loss was most marked in the supine position. The cochlea was close to the fossa in three patients, all of whom had tinni

Laser stapedectomy is looked upon as an operation method which may be less harmful to the inner ear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the course of temperature behind the footplate of isolated human petrous bones while using the Argon Laser. We found that a non-linear relationship exists between the power of the Laser beam, the duration of the impulse and the sudden temperature rise during the impulse. Another, though linear, relationship exists between the energy of the beam and the permanent elevation of temperature in the perilymph during repeated shots. The observation of tiny

The origin of efferent fibers to the inner ear was studied in Caiman crocodilus. After injection of horseradish peroxidase into the basilar papilla or into the ampullae of the horizontal and anterior semicircular canals, neurons labeled by the granular reaction product of retrogradely transported HRP were found in the medulla oblongata bilaterally. Parent cells of the efferent cochlear bundle were found in the medial reticular nucleus and in the rostroventral division of the superior olive bilaterally. Efferent vestibular neurons were found in the medial reticular nucleus bilaterally with more

Patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS) in the internal auditory canal and/or cerebellopontine angle often experience hearing loss in the affected ear, which is attributable to the disease or its treatment. If conventional hearing aids do not provide sufficient speech comprehension, cochlear implantation (CI) can be an effective means of hearing rehabilitation after microsurgical tumour resection, radiotherapy or observation, if patients are carefully selected. However, the audiological results are more variable compared to the more common CI indications. A prerequisite for good hearing resul

Cisplatin-induced ototoxicity leads to irreversible hearing loss in approximately 50% of treated patients, largely due to the cochlea's exceptionally poor cisplatin clearance compared with other organs. Although sodium thiosulfate (STS), a hydrophilic small molecule, is an established otoprotectant, achieving therapeutically sufficient cochlear concentrations remains challenging because systemic administration is limited by the blood-labyrinth barrier. Here, we report a viscosity-tunable microgel-in-sol system based on hyaluronic acid (HA) that enables sustained, localized delivery of STS to t

Hearing is among the most sensitive sensory modalities in vertebrates, and its dysfunction can lead to hearing loss. Auditory perception within the inner ear relies on mechanosensitive hair cells and a sophisticated network of molecules that comprise the machinery responsible for mechanotransduction. The mechanosensory hair cells exhibit distinct structural features that enable them to transform sound vibrations into electrical signals, which are then relayed to the spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) that are connecting between the cochlear hair cells and the cochlear nuclei with high accuracy and

Mechanical force controls the opening and closing of mechanosensitive ion channels atop the hair bundles of the inner ear. The filamentous tip link connecting transduction channels to the tallest neighboring stereocilium modulates the force transmitted to the channels and thus changes their probability of opening. Each tip link comprises four molecules: a dimer of protocadherin 15 (PCDH15) and a dimer of cadherin 23, all of which are stabilized by Ca2+ binding. Using a high-speed optical trap to examine dimeric PCDH15, we find that the protein's mechanical properties are sensitive to Ca2+ and

BACKGROUND Superior semicircular canal dehiscence is an inner-ear pathology which presents with vertigo, disequilibrium, and hearing loss. Although the exact etiology of superior semicircular canal dehiscence is unknown, it is thought that an increase in middle-ear pressure disrupts a thin overlying temporal bone. Superior semicircular canal dehiscence is frequently seen in association with dehiscence of the tegmen tympani, which overlies the middle ear. Here, we present a case report of a 52-year-old Puerto Rican man with vertigo, dizziness, vomiting, and mild hearing loss associated with sup

INTRODUCTION: Children with inner ear malformation (IEM) are at risk of vestibular loss as well as hearing loss. Incomplete partition (IP) anomalies constitute about 41% of all IEMs. This study aimed to investigate the postural control in subjects with the same type of IP on both sides and to compare their results with cochlear implant (CI) users without IEM and healthy peers.
METHODS: The study group consists of 17 subjects with the same IP types on both sides and using auditory implants on at least one side, with the following 3 groups: 6 IP-I subjects (mean age 12.28 ± 6.25), 6 IP-II subje

OBJECTIVES: Hypothesized causes of vestibular neuritis/labyrinthitis include neuroinflammatory or vascular disorders, yet vascular disorders of the inner ear are poorly understood. Guided by known microvascular diseases of the retina, we developed 2 hypotheses: (1) there exist vascular vulnerabilities of artery channels in cases of hypothetical nerve swelling for the superior, inferior, and vestibulocochlear artery and (2) there are arteriovenous crossings that could compromise vascular flow in disease states.
METHODS: Two fully mounted and stained temporal bones were used to render three-dim
