Economic studies of vaccines, including vaccine development and delivery issues, are increasingly needed to inform policy recommendations and programmatic decisions in the USA. This need arises from the increasing costs of vaccines, the complexity of the US healthcare system and the limited number of vaccine manufacturers in the market. We have developed a national research agenda in domestic and global vaccine economics by conducting key informant interviews with 42 experts and inviting ideas from an additional 128 experts. To assess priorities among the 129 ideas that were generated, we aske

The conventional wisdom holds that workplace health promotion (HP) programs yield financial dividends, often generating cost savings. To examine the intellectual and empirical basis for this belief, we reviewed the literature on the economics of workplace HP programs. In general, in the literature published through early 1986, the claims of HP programs' profitability are based on anecdotal evidence or analyses seriously flawed in terms of assumptions, data, or methodology. Furthermore, certain aspects of the economics of HP programs have been virtually ignored. The dearth of sound evidence on

BACKGROUND: Haemolytic disease of the foetus and newborn (HDFN) is an immune disorder driven by maternal alloimmunisation against foetal/newborn red blood cell antigens. HDFN can cause significant morbidity and mortality, with symptoms in the foetus ranging from mild anaemia to hydrops fetalis. While in newborns, HDFN can lead to severe forms of neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia and kernicterus. This systematic review (SR) aimed to identify and summarise real-world evidence (RWE) related to the patient burden/experience and economic burden of HDFN.
METHODS: Electronic database searches supplemente

Understanding the dynamic nature of sex work is important for explaining the course of HIV epidemics. While health and development interventions targeting sex workers may alter the dynamics of the sex trade in particular localities, little has been done to explore how large-scale social and structural changes, such as economic recessions-outside of the bounds of organizational intervention-may reconfigure social norms and attitudes with regards to sex work. Zimbabwe's economic collapse in 2009, following a period (2000-2009) of economic decline, within a declining HIV epidemic, provides a uniq

Leptospirosis is a serious public health concern in the Philippines, not only because of its increasing incidence rate, but also because of its significant health and economic impacts. Despite its relatively high seroprevalence, knowledge on the economic burden of disease, particularly on the value that the society places on disease prevention remains limited. Obtaining such information is important within the context of public health policy. This study was conducted in Metro Manila to determine the economic burden of leptospirosis, by asking respondents about their willingness to contribute t

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention programs can mitigate the health and economic burden of STIs. A tool to estimate the economic benefits of STI programs could prove useful to STI program personnel.
METHODS: We developed formulas that can be applied to estimate the direct medical costs and indirect costs (lost productivity) averted by STI programs in the United States. Costs and probabilities for these formulas were based primarily on published studies.
RESULTS: We present a series of formulas that can be used to estimate the economic benefits of STI prevention (in 2

The ongoing development of high-throughput sequencing technology and continuous decline of sequencing cost have made it possible to carry out large-scale screening for genetic diseases, which are the main component of birth defects. The screening of genetic diseases is expected to significantly reduce the rate of birth defects and the burden of genetic diseases to the affected families and the society. Taking Down syndrome as an example, through the analysis of the cost-benefit ratio of relevant screening programs, this article has summarized the socio-economic indicators to be considered duri

Equines play a crucial role in global food security, economic development, and recreation, particularly in regions such as Central Asia, parts of Africa, and South America. However, parasitic infections significantly impact their health, productivity, and reproductive performance, leading to economic losses and reduced animal welfare. This review synthesizes the effects of parasitic infections, including protozoan, helminthic, and ectoparasitic species, on equines. These infections cause hematological alterations like anemia, leukocytosis, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia, compromising overall…

Public health is at the core of all environmental and anthropic impacts. Urban and territorial planners should include public health concerns in their plans. Basic sanitation infrastructure is essential to maintaining public health and social and economic development. This infrastructure deficiency causes diseases, death and economic losses in developing countries. Framing interconnections among health, sanitation, urbanization and circular economy will assist sustainable development goal achievements. This study aims to identify the relationships between solid waste management indicators in B…

Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is an important foodborne pathogen that can cause diseases such as gas gangrene and necrotizing enteritis in a variety of economic animals, seriously affecting public health and the economic benefits and healthy development of the livestock and poultry breeding industry. Perfringolysin O (PFO) is an important virulence factor of C. perfringens and plays critical roles in necrotic enteritis and gas gangrene, rendering it an ideal target for developing new drugs against infections caused by this pathogen. In this study, based on biological activity inhibi

Universal access to sexual and reproductive health services is one of the goals of the International Conference on Population and Development of 1994. The Millennium Development Goals were intended above all to end poverty. Universal access to health and health services are among the goals being considered for the post-2015 agenda, replacing or augmenting the MDGs. Yet we are not only far from reaching any of these goals but also appear to have lost our way somewhere along the line. Poverty and lack of food security have, through their multiple linkages to health and access to health care, det

Lately, the magnitude of cumulative diseases burden caused by flaviviruses, such as dengue virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, tick-borne encephalitis virus, West Nile virus and yellow fever virus, has reached an unprecedented level with the sizes of human and animal populations at risk increasing sharply. These diseases present highly complex medical, economic and ecologic problems, some effecting primarily human and others affecting human, livestock and wildlife. The large body of recent publications on the development of vaccines taking advantage of new generations of bio-engineering techni
