OBJECTIVES: Subjective survival probability (SSP) is a key predictor of economic and health decisions in later life, yet existing research assumes that gains and losses in survival expectations have symmetric behavioral effects. This study examines how within-person changes in SSP are associated with health-promoting behaviors among middle-aged and older adults in South Korea.
METHODS: Using ten waves of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (2006-2024), we estimate individual fixed-effects models on an analytic sample of 65,069 person-wave observations from 10,878 individuals aged 45 and o

This sociological study examines how cultural capital and institutional structures shape digital behaviors among 606 Chinese high school students using stratified sampling across school types (provincial/municipal/regular) and income groups. Applying Bourdieu's capital theory within an Affect-Behavior-Cognition framework, we reveal entrenched stratification: students from high-income households (≥310,000 CNY) demonstrate significantly stronger cultural identity (ΔM = 0.15, F = 2.533, p = 0.048) and social interaction (ΔM = 0.24, F = 3.767, p = 0.005) compared to low-income peers, while municip

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Zimbabwe faces a protracted cholera crisis exacerbated by El Niño-induced droughts, transitioning from episodic outbreaks to an endemic public health emergency. While recurrent outbreaks are often attributed to poor community awareness, this study moves beyond the conventional Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) paradigm. Grounded in the Integrated Behavioral Model for WASH and the theory of structural violence, we investigate the structural determinants of the knowledge-practice gap to understand how infrastructural disparities constrain cholera prevention.

The characteristics of where people live are increasingly recognized as influential in shaping health-related behaviors, including smoking. The adverse impact of poor neighborhood characteristics on health disproportionately plagues Black Americans, but also likely varies across subgroups within the Black community, leading to health disparities. This study examined the roles of residential segregation and housing cost burden in smoking behavior among a national probability sample of 2370 Black American adults. We further assessed whether individual demographics and social support moderated th

Our study aimed to understand the relationship between the status of high-risk sexual behaviors of male ≥50 years old (elderly men) and their family support in a rural county-level city in Chengdu. Multi-stage sampling was used to select rural elderly men from six towns to conduct an interview questionnaire survey. Ordinal logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between high-risk sexual behavior and family factors. A total of 790 samples were included, and the prevalence of high-risk sexual behavior was 16.2%. Two-hundred thirty-nine men (30.3%) had three close family members.

The present study describes the development and validation of the Masculine Attributes Questionnaire (MAQ). The purpose of this study was to develop a theoretically and empirically grounded measure of masculine attributes for sexual health research with African American young men. Consistent with Whitehead's theory, the MAQ items were hypothesized to comprise two components representing reputation-based and respect-based attributes. The sample included 505 African American men aged 19 to 22 years ( M = 20.29, SD = 1.10) living in resource-poor communities in the rural South. Convergent and dis

BACKGROUND: Tackling inequalities in overweight, obesity and related complications has become a top priority for European research and policy agendas. It is well-known that the health message often does not reach disadvantaged populations, a phenomenon that widens health inequalities. Ensemble Prévenons l'Obésité des Enfants (EPODE) methodology is an innovative approach to counteract obesity and improve health equity. EPODE for the Promotion of Health Equity (EPHE) has assessed the impact and sustainability of the EPODE methodology to diminish inequalities in childhood obesity prevention. The

BACKGROUND: Young Onset Dementia (YOD), defined by first symptoms of cognitive or behavioral decline occurring before the age of 65 years, is relatively rare compared to dementia of later onset, but it is associated with diagnostic difficulty and heavy burden on affected individuals and their informal carers. Existing health and social care structures rarely meet the needs of YOD patients. Internet-based interventions are a novel format of delivering health-related education, counseling, and support to this vulnerable yet underserved group.

BACKGROUND: Across the world, drug-users (DU) have been shown to be at greater risk of contracting and transmitting sexually transmitted diseases and HIV infection. However, in the metropolitan cities of India, where drug-use patterns may uniquely vary between injection and noninjection, depending on drug availability, little is known about the risk behavior of drug-users.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to find out whether drug-users are more likely to practice high-risk sexual behavior compared to non-drug users.
METHODS: The sexual behavior of 70 drug-users, selected by snowball

Supporting population-level dietary transitions to plant-based diets (PBDs) for human and environmental health demands a comprehensive understanding of lived experience and human behavior. This study examined how diverse identities shape PBD behavior. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Intersectionality, we implemented multi-group structural equation models with a national sample of US rural adults (n = 1908) to predict adherence to a PBD. In the main model, attitude (β = 1.117, p < 0.001) was the only predictor of intention to consume a PBD. Intention (β=0.630, p < 0.001) and perc

This study aimed to examine how trust in institutions and changes in household finances were associated with healthcare utilization and preventive behaviors during and immediately after the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened health disparities, ignited distrust in healthcare systems, and contributed to household economic shifts for many United States (US) residents. To examine these issues, we surveyed a nationally representative sample of US residents in July 2020 (n = 1,085) and May 2023 (n = 2,189). These repeated cross-sectional surveys enabled investigation of how trust in

Pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of acquired disability in children, potentially leading to neurocognitive deficits that affect daily functioning. This study explored the impact of pediatric TBI on neurocognitive network organization and its relation to intelligence and behavior problems. This observational multicenter study prospectively included 113 children with mild to severe TBI and 113 neurologically healthy (NH) children, matched for sex, age and socio-economic status. Six months post-TBI, neurocognitive functioning was assessed using computerized tests, intel

Over the past two decades, the escalating prescription of opioid medications for pain management has culminated in a widespread opioid epidemic, significantly impacting public health, social dynamics, and economic stability. The urgent need for improved treatments for opioid addiction necessitates a deeper understanding of its biological underpinnings, with genetic variations playing a crucial role in individual susceptibility to opioid use disorder (OUD) and influencing clinical practices. In this study, we leverage the genetic diversity of four rat strains (ACI/N, BN/NHsd, WKY/N, and F344/N)

RATIONALE: Cocaine base paste (CBP) is an illegal drug of abuse usually consumed by adolescents in a socio-economically vulnerable situation. Repeated drug use targets key brain circuits disrupting the processes that underlie emotions and cognition. At the basis of such neuroadaptations lie changes in the expression of immediate-early genes (IEGs). Nevertheless, changes in transcriptional regulation associated with CBP consumption remain unknown.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to describe behavioral phenotype related to locomotion, anxiety-like behavior, and memory of CBP-injected mice and to study IEG

INTRODUCTION: Since the COVID-19 pandemic onset, preventive measures (e.g., social distancing, hand hygiene, mask usage) and vaccines have been pivotal in mitigating transmission and reducing public health burdens. Although adherence to these measures, influenced by factors such as ventilation and exposure duration, has been extensively validated, their long-term sustainability faces socio-economic challenges.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between risk perception and adherence to preventive behaviors and conduct a meta-analysis comparing these behaviors in vaccinated versus unvac

Neuropsychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression have formidable economic and societal impacts. A dysregulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis leading to elevated endogenous glucocorticoid levels is often associated with such disorders. Chronically high glucocorticoid levels may act upon the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) to alter normally adaptive responses into those that are maladaptive and detrimental. In addition to glucocorticoids, other steroid hormones such as estradiol and androgens can also modify hormonal and behavioral responses to threatening stimu

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of myopia among Chinese children and adolescents, especially at younger ages, has emerged as a significant concern in recent years. Pre-myopia is a key period for myopia prevention and control in children and adolescents. Previous studies suggested auricular acupressure (AA) therapy might offer a viable approach to prevent and slow down myopia progression. Nonetheless, these studies lack robust, high-quality, large-scale, multi-center evidence to conclusively support such assertions. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and eco
