[Surgical treatment of the elbow joint in chronic polyarthritis].

Compared to the frequency of manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis in the elbow joint the quota of surgical intervention in this area is low. In most cases pain and disability are only moderate, especially if the reduced range of motion is compensated by maintained function of the equilateral shoulder and wrist joint. Surgical treatment is indicated if instability increases, the independency of the patients in daily life is endangered and inflammation increases acutely. A persistent compression of n. ulnaris has to be operated as soon as possible. Often the preferred early synovectomy is impos…

A new technique of fusion for tuberculous arthritis of the elbow.

Of eleven patients with tuberculosis of the elbow who were operated on using a new technique, six were followed for two years or more. This technique (which includes debridement and total synovectomy, excision of the radial head, insertion of the triangularly shaped olecranon into a correspondingly shaped hole in the distal end of the humerus, fixation of the humerus and ulna with a single screw, medial and lateral epicondylectomy, and anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve) provides superior bone contact and firm internal fixation without the need for bone grafts. Solid fusion resulted in …

[Tunnel neuropathy of the radial nerve in the elbow region].

Symptoms of tunnel pathologies of the radial nerve in the ulnar region were analyzed in 39 patients (48 arms). Of importance in the tunnel neuropathy development is an overstrain of the short radial extensor of the wrist and the supinator which are in a close anatomical contact with the radial nerve branches. The affection of the radial nerve manifests in a sharp painfulness on the lateral surface of the ulnar region. The pains irradiate in the distal direction. Sensitivity disturbances within the autonomous zone innervated by the radial nerve were revealed in 17, and a moderate paresis of the

Total replacement of the rheumatoid elbow with a hingeless prosthesis.

Twenty-four elbows with rheumatoid arthritis underwent total replacement arthroplasty with insertion of a hingeless surface-replacement prosthesis. These were followed for an average of three years and ten months. Excellent results were seen in fourteen elbows; fair, in seven; and poor, in three. Satisfactory pain relief as well as good stability were obtained in all but one elbow. Two elbows did not regain a useful range of motion. Proximal migration of the humeral component was seen in one elbow, and persistent subluxation with pain and instability was seen in another. No other major complic…

[Anatomical basis for dislocations and recurring dislocations of the elbow].

The authors report on a static and dynamic study of the lig. collaterale radiale. The essential role of the middle bundle, which can always be isolated on fresh cadaver, is stressed. A new theory on the mechanism of elbow dislocation is thus justified. By analogy with recurring dislocations of the shoulder, the authors consider that operations attempting to reestablish the tension of this ligament are justified. Such operations can be focused on the middle bundle of the lig. collaterale radiale.

Dislocation of the elbow: a retrospective study of 115 patients.

Of the 115 elbow dislocations treated at two New Orleans hospitals between 1959 and 1969, 78% were posterior. Sixty-one percent of the patients were 21 years of age or younger, and the male-female ratio was 1.7:1.0. The most common associated injuries were fractures of the medial condyle or epicondyle. All uncomplicated dislocations were treated by closed reduction and plaster immobilization. Of the 35 cases complicated by medial condylar or epicondylar fractures, 29 required open reduction and internal fixation. Results were excellent or good in 91% of the cases. The three patients (2.6%) wit…

EVIDENCE-BASED REVIEWS & RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE BRAZILIAN SOCIETY OF SHOULDER AND ELBOW SURGERY: HYALURONIC ACID INFILTRATION FOR ELBOW EPICONDYLITIS IN ADULTS.

INTRODUCTION: Elbow epicondylitis is a common tendinopathy in adults, and infiltration is frequently used when initial conservative treatment fails. Hyaluronic acid and corticosteroids are among the most widely used injectable agents, but their comparative effectiveness remains uncertain. METHODS: We performed an evidence-based review of randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews comparing hyaluronic acid with corticosteroid injections for adult elbow epicondylitis. PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and BVS were searched through August 2025. Main outcomes were pain and elbow func…

Open elbow arthrolysis with hinged external fixation for postburn elbow stiffness: a case series with an averaged 4-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with severe burns may develop heterotopic ossification (HO), articular cartilage loss, and soft tissue contracture in the elbow, significantly limiting elbow function and diminishing quality of life. Open elbow arthrolysis (OEA) combined with hinged external fixation (HEF) has demonstrated efficacy in managing severe elbow stiffness. However, no recent studies have specifically investigated its application in postburn elbow stiffness. This study evaluates the clinical outcomes of OEA with HEF in patients with postburn elbow stiffness, with an average follow-up period of fou…

Increased Medial Elbow Torque Is Associated With Ball Velocity Rather Than a History of Medial Elbow Injuries in Youth Baseball Pitchers.

PURPOSE: This study compared medial elbow torque in youth baseball pitchers with and without a history of medial elbow injuries to determine the relationship between medial elbow torque during pitching and having a history of medial elbow injuries. METHODS: We recruited 171 youth baseball pitchers aged 9 to 12 years old. The exclusion criteria included current pain with pitching, history of surgery on the tested extremity, or osteochondritis dissecans of the humeral capitellum. The participants were grouped into 3 groups: injury <1-year, injury >1-year, and control, based on ultrasonographic …

Grip strength is more sensitive to changes in elbow position than isolated wrist extension strength in patients with lateral elbow tendinopathy.

STUDY DESIGN: This is an observational study. INTRODUCTION: Because isometric wrist extension minimizes the effects of other muscles, the sensitivity of wrist extension strength testing on patients with lateral elbow tendinopathy (LET) should be evaluated. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The purpose of the study was to compare the effects of the elbow position on wrist extension and grip strength in patients with LET. METHODS: Patients were screened for at least 2 of 5 clinical tests for LET. Between-day intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC3, 1) for healthy individuals were examined for both grip…

Elbow extension test to rule out elbow fracture: multicentre, prospective validation and observational study of diagnostic accuracy in adults and children.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether full elbow extension as assessed by the elbow extension test can be used in routine clinical practice to rule out bony injury in patients presenting with elbow injury. DESIGN: Adults: multicentre prospective interventional validation study in secondary care. Children: multicentre prospective observational study in secondary care. SETTING: Five emergency departments in southwest England. PARTICIPANTS: 2127 adults and children presenting to the emergency department with acute elbow injury. INTERVENTION: Elbow extension test during routine care by clinical staf…

A new prognostic nomogram for heterotopic ossification formation after elbow trauma : the Shanghai post-Traumatic Elbow Heterotopic Ossification Prediction (STEHOP) model.

AIMS: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a common complication after elbow trauma and can cause severe upper limb disability. Although multiple prognostic factors have been reported to be associated with the development of post-traumatic HO, no model has yet been able to combine these predictors more succinctly to convey prognostic information and medical measures to patients. Therefore, this study aimed to identify prognostic factors leading to the formation of HO after surgery for elbow trauma, and to establish and validate a nomogram to predict the probability of HO formation in such particul…
