Change in composition of the Anopheles gambiae complex and its possible implications for the transmission of malaria and lymphatic filariasis in north-eastern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: A dramatic decline in the incidence of malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum infection in coastal East Africa has recently been reported to be paralleled (or even preceded) by an equally dramatic decline in malaria vector density, despite absence of organized vector control. As part of investigations into possible causes for the change in vector population density, the present study analysed the Anopheles gambiae s.l. sibling species composition in north-eastern Tanzania. METHODS: The study was in two parts. The first compared current species complex composition in freshly caught A

Data base management system for lymphatic filariasis--a neglected tropical disease.

BACKGROUND: Researchers working in the area of Public Health are being confronted with large volumes of data on various aspects of entomology and epidemiology. To obtain the relevant information out of these data requires particular database management system. In this paper, we have described about the usages of our developed database on lymphatic filariasis. METHODS: This database application is developed using Model View Controller (MVC) architecture, with MySQL as database and a web based interface. We have collected and incorporated the data on filariasis in the database from Karimnagar,

How endemic countries can accelerate lymphatic filariasis elimination? An analytical review to identify strategic and programmatic interventions.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is endemic in 81 countries in the world, and a number of these countries have targeted for LF elimination. This review of literature and analysis was conducted to identify additional and sustainable strategies to accelerate LF elimination from endemic countries. This review noted that adverse events due to mass drug administration (MDA) of diethyl carbamazine (DEC) tablets, poor knowledge and information about LF amongst health workers & community members, and limited focus on information, education & communication (IEC) activities and interpersonal communication are

Geographic and ecologic heterogeneity in elimination thresholds for the major vector-borne helminthic disease, lymphatic filariasis.

BACKGROUND: Large-scale intervention programmes to control or eliminate several infectious diseases are currently underway worldwide. However, a major unresolved question remains: what are reasonable stopping points for these programmes? Recent theoretical work has highlighted how the ecological complexity and heterogeneity inherent in the transmission dynamics of macroparasites can result in elimination thresholds that vary between local communities. Here, we examine the empirical evidence for this hypothesis and its implications for the global elimination of the major macroparasitic disease,

DNA-based diagnosis of lymphatic filariasis.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is still a major public health problem. The disease is ranked by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the second leading cause of permanent and long-term disability, and has been targeted for elimination by 2020. Effective diagnosis LF is required for treatment of infected individuals, for epidemiological assessment and for monitoring of the control program. Conventional diagnosis of LF depends on detection of microfilariae (Mf) in blood specimens, which has low sensitivity and specificity. Detection of specific circulating filarial antigens is regarded by WHO as th

[Lymphatic filariasis in Belém, Pará State, North of Brazil and the perspective of elimination].

The objective was to characterize the epidemiological situation of lymphatic filariasis in Belém, state of Pará. Hemoscopic data was analyzed from 1951 through 2003. Information for the period from 1951 to 1994 was collected from reports available from the National Health Foundation. Data from 1995 to 2003 was obtained through surveys carried out in 62 city sectors, within the eight administrative districts of the city. An appreciable drop in the microfilaraemic rates was observed over the years. The percentages of parasitized individuals in the decades of 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980 and 1990, were

[Studies on allelic zymogram of periodic Brugia malayi from Zhejiang Province].

AIM: To study the allelic zymogram of periodic B. malayi from Zhejiang Province. METHODS: 180 adult worms(male 60, female 120), 32,000 microfilaria and 1,500 infective larvae of periodic B. malayi were examined for the isoenzymes of 14 enzymes by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis with 14 different isomyme. RESULTS: Twenty-seven allelic loci were found in three developing stages of B. malayi, most of them were homozygotes, however, two of them(MPI,MDH) were heterozygotes(7.4%). 17, 19 and 9 loci were presented in adult worms, microfilariae and infective larvae, respectively. At the same t

Periodicity of Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae in south western Ethiopia.

As part of a clinical and epidemiological study of lymphatic filariasis in southwestern Ethiopia the microfilarial density in the blood of two male and two female volunteers from the village of Ketch (near the town of Gambella) was determined every four hours for a 24-hour period using the counting chamber technique. In the blood of the volunteers the majority of the microfilariae appeared between 20 and 04 hours with peak at 24 hours (range at peak time + 3060-3560 mf/ml blood) depicting a nocturnal periodicity of circulating Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae. This has important implications

Problems with filariasis control in the Philippines.

Problems with filariasis control in this country of more than seven thousand islands are presented and discussed according to the political, economic, and socio-behavioral aspects. Discussed are issues relating not only to the recipients of the health services and control programs but also to the people in the control program and disease control managers. Marinduque, a recently described endemic focus of lymphatic filariasis, is used to illustrate the many problems affecting the control efforts in the Philippines. The true impact of the problem has not been described lately, hence the need for

Ivermectin in the treatment of bancroftian filarial infection in Orissa, India.

Ivermectin treatment was evaluated for its efficacy and side reactions in sixty patients of Orissa with Bancroftian filarial infection and microfilaremia. Ivermectin was administered as a single oral dose at four dosage levels (20, 50, 100 and 200 micrograms/kg), and both microfilarial clearance and associated side reactions were monitored in a double blind fashion. Blood microfilariae were cleared in all patients at all dosages within 1 to 14 days. In most patients microfilariae reappeared by third month. The microfilaria appearance by third and sixth month averaged 12.2 to 44 percent of pret

Zoonotic Brugia infection in western Michigan.

A case of zoonotic lymphatic filariasis is reported from a resident of Michigan. Numerous sections of a small, nongravid female worm, measuring approximately 65 microns in diameter, were identified in histological preparations of an excised inguinal lymph node. Based on its location, small size, thin cuticle, small number of muscle cells, and paired uterine tubes, the worm was identified as a Brugia species, undoubtedly of zoonotic origin from the local animal population. The pathological response of the host to the parasite was one of hyperplastic lymph nodes with a focal granulomatous reacti

Repeated infection of cats with Brugia pahangi: parasitological observations.

Cats were repeatedly inoculated with infective larvae of Brugia pahangi. On parasitological grounds they could be divided into 5 groups. Group I--most cats (some 70%) became microfilaraemic (mf+) and retained high levels of microfilariae (mf) in their blood for over 2 years. In some Group I cats mf counts stabilized at high levels whilst in others mf counts continued to increase. Large numbers of fecund adult worms were recovered from their lymphatics. Adult counts were not made on the cats in the current experiments but over 100 adults have been recovered from 'super-susceptible' cats. Large

[Studies on dynamic of antibodies detected in sera from jirds infected with Brugia malayi before and after treatment].

Indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) and immunoenzymatic staining technique (IEST), using frozen section of Brugia malayi and Setaria cervi adult worms, were applied to detect levels of IgG and IgM antibodies in jirds infected with Brugia malayi before and after treatment. Both methods could show the dynamic of antibodies during the course of infection. The peak of IgG and IgM antibodies were at the 12-14th week and 2-6th week after infection respectively. A high correlation was observed between the levels of IgG antibody and the period of infection, whereas the antibody titer had n

A new realistic index of experimental transmission efficiency for Bancroftian filariasis.

An index for experimental transmission of filariasis infection was first introduced by Kartman and subsequently modified by Wharton who defined it as 'the number of infective larvae per mosquito when the microfilaria count is 1.0 mm-3 of human blood'. Since mosquitoes may not imbibe the expected number of microfilariae from the donor's blood during feeding because of various interference phenomena and/or mechanisms, this paper presents the index mosquito meal (Index MM), based on the actual number of viable microfilariae that are observed in the mosquito gut immediately after feeding. Bancroftian filariasis: long-term effects of treatment with diethylcarbamazine in a Haitian population.

Two groups of Wuchereria bancrofti-infected Haitians who had undergone treatment with diethylcarbamazine (DEC) were followed for up to five years after treatment to document the long-term effects of treatment on adult worms and microfilariae and on the recurrence of infection. One group of 69 persons who had received 12 daily treatments had a significant decrease in microfilaria levels until year 4, when a small number of individuals experienced a resurgence of this parasite stage in the peripheral blood. In a second group of 57 persons who had been treated weekly for 12 consecutive weeks, the
