Medical Students' Perception Toward Various Human Anatomy Teaching Methods in Khartoum, Sudan.

Background Anatomy teaching uses both traditional and modern methods. Although cadaveric dissection remains the gold standard, students face … bodies (48.4%), anatomical models (39.1%), and multimedia resources (34.7%). Reported challenges in embryology included difficulty understanding developmental sequences, limited time, and visualization difficulties (52.4%), while histology challenges centered on insufficient lecture (33.9%) and practical (33.1%) time. Gender comparisons showed no significant …

Selective pathologies of the head and neck in children: a developmental perspective.

The range of pathology seen in the head and neck region is truly amazing and to a large extent probably mirrors the complex signaling pathwa … y if they compress the airway or other vital structures. Exciting investigations into the molecular embryology of craniofacial development have begun to shed light on the pathogenesis of craniofacial developmental lesions and syndromes. Much more investigation is needed, however, to intertwine aberrations in the molecular ontogeny and development of the head …

Oesophageal lung: a rare cause of complete hemithorax opacification.

Congenital bronchopulmonary foregut anomalies are uncommon group of disorders that reflect upon the embryological development of the foregut. These conditions represent the intimate embryological proximity of the foregut and tracheobronchial tree. The radiological findings are typically of segmental or lobar consolidation with abnormal vascular supply or foregut communication. We report a case of a breathless neonate with oesophageal origin of the right main bronchus. This communication was well demonstrated with the help of an oesophagogram. The radiologist plays an important role by identify

Manipulation and electroporation of the avian segmental plate and somites in vitro.

The chick embryo has been a leading model in embryological studies, including somitogenesis, because of its easy accessibility for manipulation during most of its development. The recent development of gain- and loss-of-function strategies of specific genes by electroporation has made the chick embryo an even more attractive model for embryological studies. In vitro electroporation, combined with whole chick embryo culture techniques, provides a wide range of possible approaches to study early stages of chick embryogenesis. We will describe in vitro electroporation techniques that are useful t

The windblown hand - diagnosis, clinical picture and pathogenesis.

The syndrome of the windblown hand deformity is a complex constellation of malformations affecting not only the head and the feet but also the hands in a quite distinct manner. In the hand, it involves congenital bilateral flexion contracture with ulnar deviation of the metacarpophalangeal joints. The thumb is characteristically adducted (reaching the palm; "thumb-in-palm deformity") with flexion of the MP joint and hyperextension of the IP joint. The etiology is basically unknown. We present two theories based on knowledge derived from the disciplines of evolution biology and embryology. We b…

Congenital Anomalies and Variations of the Carotid and Vertebral Arteries: A Case-Based Imaging Review.

The carotid and vertebral arteries are critical components of the cerebral circulation, supplying the brain and spinal cord. Their embryologic development involves complex transformations of the aortic arches, paired dorsal aortae, and cervical intersegmental arteries. Congenital anomalies and variations involving their origin, course, and branching patterns are relatively common and are increasingly recognized using modern imaging. While many of these variants are incidental, some carry important clinical implications, particularly in contexts of stroke imaging, head and neck surgery, and neu

Pyriform sinus malformations: a cadaveric representation.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The most important aspects in management of pyriform sinus malformations are awareness of the diagnosis, familiarity with the clinical manifestations, and complete surgical excision of the entire tract. Pyriform sinus anomalies are the least common branchial apparatus malformations and present anatomically as sinus tracts with or without cystic dilatation. The clinical presentations can include lateral neck mass, thyroid abscess, suppurative thyroiditis, retropharyngeal abscess, neonatal airway obstruction, and even carcinoma. Recurrent symptoms after surgery suggest incomp

[The dorsoventral inversion: An attempt of synthesis].

The invertebrates, with known exception of echinoderms, are hyponeurian and protostomian. By contrast, echinoderms, chordates and vertebrate are epineurian and deuterostomian. Convinced of the uniqueness origin of all species, Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire (1772-1844), had postulated a complete inversion of body plan to explain this difference. He had to face up to the hostility of the fixist Georges Cuvier (1763-1832). Much later, famous embryologists such as Maurice Caullery still believed that this idea was erroneous. However, the progress of comparative embryology and of developmental bio…

Decoding Hearts: Genetic Insights and Clinical Strategies in Congenital Heart Disease.

Structural congenital heart disease (CHD) represents a heterogeneous group of cardiac anomalies of variable embryologic and molecular origins. A basic understanding of the genetics implicated in nonsyndromic (isolated) and syndromic structural CHD can better inform management decisions and family counseling. When a fetus or neonate develops CHD as a result of a genetic cause, it can be due to a mutation or a monogenic, oligogenic, or polygenic pathogenic variant. In this review, we summarize basic cardiac embryology in the context of genetic signaling pathways and proteins that are commonly im…

Bilateral Persistent Sciatic Artery - An Infrequent Occurrence: A Case Report with Review of Literature.

A persistent sciatic artery (PSA) is a rare congenital vascular anomaly with an extremely low incidence of about 0.04%-0.06%. It is due to the persistence of the embryological axial limb artery, representing a continuation of the internal iliac artery into the thigh through the greater sciatic foramen below the piriformis muscle and down the thigh alongside the sciatic nerve. In normal embryologic development of the lower limb, the axial artery normally regresses after week 12. Persistent sciatic artery is often asymptomatic until a complication develops, it can be classified into two types, c

Anencephaly: pitfalls in pregnancy outcome and relevance of the prenatal exam.

Anencephaly is an embryological malformation of the central nervous system, invariable lethal, characterized by the absence of the brain and cranial vault and by other defects of the cranial structures. It has no cure but it can be detected during the pregnancy with ultrasonography. We present a rare case of a 15-year-old primipara, with no prenatal care, who delivered at 37 weeks an anencephalous female newborn. Ultrasonography avoided the confusion with a breach presentation, which, in conjunction with the prematurity, premature rupture of membranes and the young maternal age would have favo

Craniofacial dermoid cysts: histological analysis and inter-site comparison.

INTRODUCTION: Dermoid cysts are common, benign, embryologically derived soft tissue cysts that can arise at a variety of craniofacial sites. It is not known whether specific histological variations exist between the different craniofacial sites. This study aims to establish whether inter-site histologic differences exist between periorbital, nasal, scalp, and postauricular dermoid cysts and analyze these in context of their distinct embryological origin and varied clinical presentation. METHODS: A retrospective review of craniofacial dermoid cysts was performed. Using light microscopy with he

Case report: Right vertebral and carotid artery anomalies with an aberrant right subclavian artery in two patients.

Abnormal origins of the vertebral artery with supra-aortic vessel variants are exceedingly uncommon. Herein, we present two cases of the vertebral artery originating from the right common carotid artery associated with the right subclavian artery arising separately as the initial branch of the aortic arch, followed by the right common carotid artery. We reviewed the embryology of the anomalous origins of the vertebral and subclavian arteries. These variants can significantly affect surgical planning and cause severe clinical symptoms.

Percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale in a patient with situs viscerum inversus.

We describe the case of a patient with situs viscerum inversus totalis in whom we performed percutaneous closure of a patent foramen ovale. This case report may represent a further contribution to illustrate instrumental and interventional issues to consider in patients with situs viscerum inversus; it is also an example in which a background in embryology and congenital heart disease may aid cardiologists for the well-tolerated and effective diagnosis and treatment of adult patients with cardiac anomalies.

Chronic epididymitis with scrotal vasocutaneous urinary fistula.

Chronic Epididymitis is a relatively rare problem in boys and is often enigmatic in its etiology. It is often associated with urinary tract abnormalities in infants and prepubertal children. This report describes a rare and unusual case of a chronic epididymitis with acquired scrotal vasocutaneous urinary fistula in an 8-mo-old boy who was found to have a large prostatic utricular cyst and ectopic vas insertion. The authors discuss embryology, pathophysiology, diagnostic dilemma and different treatment options.

[Clinical case of the month. Intrapulmonary lung sequestration diagnosed in an adult].

Pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital lung malformation characterized by an abnormal segment of bronchopulmonary tissue supplied by aberrant systemic arteries. Due to the non-specific symptomatology, the diagnosis can be missed. Imaging is the cornerstone of the diagnosis. Complete surgical resection provides the definitive treatment. We report a case of pulmonary sequestration associated with an asymptomatic aspergillosis presenting during adulthood and describe briefly the epidemiology, embryology, histology, imaging and surgical treatment of this congenital abnormality.
