Cognition and behavior in adults with neurofibromatosis type 1.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) is a congenital neurocutaneous disorder. As NF1 is incurable and presents with a wide range of physical and mental symptoms, knowledge of neurocognitive and behavioral functioning can be an important aid in understanding their functional impact, and developing treatment options. To date, studies in children with NF1 have shown dysfunction in several domains, but much less is known about cognition and behavior in adults with NF1. The present study describes the neuropsychological phenotype of adults with NF1 based on comprehensive clinical examination

Toward explainable AI (XAI) for mental health detection based on language behavior.

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) in general and Natural Language Processing (NLP) in particular are paving the new way forward for the automated detection and prediction of mental health disorders among the population. Recent research in this area has prioritized predictive accuracy over model interpretability by relying on deep learning methods. However, prioritizing predictive accuracy over model interpretability can result in a lack of transparency in the decision-making process, which is critical in sensitive applications such as healthcare. There is thus a growing need for explain

Eye-Tracking and Borderline Personality Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder characterised by emotion dysregulation, impulsivity and interpersonal hypersensitivity. Its prevalence ranges from 0.5% to 6.4%. Eye tracking and pupillometry provide objective indices of social attention and inhibitory control, but the BPD literature using these techniques has not been systematically reviewed. The aim of this work was to synthesise the empirical evidence on visuo-attentional and pupillary alterations in BPD. Methods: Following the PRISMA 2020 statement, Web of Science, Scopus and PubMed w

Enhancing public health intelligence workforce capacity and capability: insights from English local authorities' COVID-19 response.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic provided a stimulus to improve emergency response capabilities in the United Kingdom. Compared to healthcare workers, there is a paucity of research examining the experiences of public health staff involved in the response. During the pandemic, English local authorities (LAs) responded to limit virus spread and mitigate its impacts by providing public health intelligence (PHI). This article reports workforce-related findings from a larger study which focused on understanding sub-national provision of PHI during an infectious disease emergency. METHODS: A mi

Dosage-sensitive X-linked locus influences the development of amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex, and fear recognition in humans.

The amygdala, which plays a critical role in emotional learning and social cognition, is structurally and functionally sexually dimorphic in humans. We used magnetic neuroimaging and molecular genetic analyses with healthy subjects and patients possessing X-chromosome anomalies to find dosage-sensitive genes that might influence amygdala development. If such X-linked genes lacked a homologue on the Y-chromosome they would be expressed in one copy in normal 46,XY males and two copies in normal 46,XX females. We showed by means of magnetic neuroimaging that 46,XY males possess significantly incr

Neither this nor that but our own: AI as a 'third space' for Eritrean female genital mutilation survivors in the UK.

Eritrean women face a difficult tension between the cultural context in which they experienced female genital mutilation (FGM) in their country of origin, where it was seen as social and moral protection, and the perspective in the UK, where it is considered harmful and a crime. This dissonance may create psychological stress and barriers for women in accessing FGM-related healthcare in the UK. While artificial intelligence (AI) is used widely in healthcare, little attention has been paid to how it could help women navigate these complex cross-cultural and emotional realities of FGM. This pape

The Emerging Roles of AI in Self-Directed Stress Management: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Stress is widespread and carries substantial mental health, social, and economic burdens. Yet, access to clinician-led stress management remains constrained by service capacity, cost, and stigma. In response, artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled tools have rapidly proliferated as scalable, self-directed options. However, evidence on how these systems support stress management outside formal clinical settings remains fragmented. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to synthesize empirical evidence on how AI-enabled technologies are used for self-directed stress management. We ma
