New estimates of the Zika virus epidemic attack rate in Northeastern Brazil from 2015 to 2016: A modelling analysis based on Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) surveillance data.

BACKGROUND: Between January 2015 and August 2016, two epidemic waves of Zika virus (ZIKV) disease swept the Northeastern (NE) region of Brazil. As a result, two waves of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) were observed concurrently. The mandatory reporting of ZIKV disease began region-wide in February 2016, and it is believed that ZIKV cases were significantly under-reported before that. The changing reporting rate has made it difficult to estimate the ZIKV infection attack rate, and studies in the literature vary widely from 17% to > 50%. The same applies to other key epidemiological parameters. I

Virus genomes reveal factors that spread and sustained the Ebola epidemic.

The 2013-2016 West African epidemic caused by the Ebola virus was of unprecedented magnitude, duration and impact. Here we reconstruct the dispersal, proliferation and decline of Ebola virus throughout the region by analysing 1,610 Ebola virus genomes, which represent over 5% of the known cases. We test the association of geography, climate and demography with viral movement among administrative regions, inferring a classic 'gravity' model, with intense dispersal between larger and closer populations. Despite attenuation of international dispersal after border closures, cross-border transmissi

Bayesian variable selection in modelling geographical heterogeneity in malaria transmission from sparse data: an application to Nouna Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) data, Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Quantification of malaria heterogeneity is very challenging, partly because of the underlying characteristics of mosquitoes and also because malaria is an environmentally driven disease. Furthermore, in order to assess the spatial and seasonal variability in malaria transmission, vector data need to be collected repeatedly over time (at fixed geographical locations). Measurements collected at locations close to each other and over time tend to be correlated because of common exposures such as environmental or climatic conditions. Non- spatial statistical methods, when applied to an

Ecological approaches in veterinary epidemiology: mapping the risk of bat-borne rabies using vegetation indices and night-time light satellite imagery.

Rabies remains a disease of significant public health concern. In the Americas, bats are an important source of rabies for pets, livestock, and humans. For effective rabies control and prevention, identifying potential areas for disease occurrence is critical to guide future research, inform public health policies, and design interventions. To anticipate zoonotic infectious diseases distribution at coarse scale, veterinary epidemiology needs to advance via exploring current geographic ecology tools and data using a biological approach. We analyzed bat-borne rabies reports in Chile from 2002 to

The use of bivariate spatial modeling of questionnaire and parasitology data to predict the distribution of Schistosoma haematobium in Coastal Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Questionnaires of reported blood in urine (BIU) distributed through the existing school system provide a rapid and reliable method to classify schools according to the prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium, thereby helping in the targeting of schistosomiasis control. However, not all schools return questionnaires and it is unclear whether treatment is warranted in such schools. This study investigates the use of bivariate spatial modelling of available and multiple data sources to predict the prevalence of S. haematobium at every school along the Kenyan coast. METHODOLOGY: Data fr

Correlated infections: quantifying individual heterogeneity in the spread of infectious diseases.

In this paper, we propose new methods for investigating the extent of heterogeneity in effective contact rates relevant to the transmission of infections. These methods exploit the correlations between ages at infection for different infections within individuals. The methods are developed for serological surveys, which provide accessible individual data on several infections, and are applied to a wide range of infections. We find that childhood infections are often highly correlated within individuals in early childhood, with the correlations persisting into adulthood only for infections shar

Change in supporting tissue following loss of a permanent maxillary incisor in children.

Alveolar bone resorption is an inevitable consequence of tooth loss and may be detrimental to long-term dental aesthetics and function. The aim of the present study was to quantify the degree of tissue resorption following the loss of a permanent incisor in a young population. The study group comprised 11 boys and five girls who all required the extraction of a permanent maxillary central incisor due to trauma-related sequelae. Mean age at tooth loss was 10.8 years. Upper alginate impressions were taken at regular intervals following tooth loss and were cast in yellow dental stone. Study model

A flexible class of parametric transition regression models based on copulas: application to poliomyelitis incidence.

This paper presents an extension of a general parametric class of transitional models of order p. In these models, the conditional distribution of the current observation, given the present and past history, is a mixture of conditional distributions, each of them corresponding to the current observation, given each one of the p-lagged observations. Such conditional distributions are constructed using bivariate copula models which allow for a rich range of dependence suitable to model non-Gaussian time series. Fixed and time varying covariates can be included in the models. These models have th

Does obesity compromise survival in women with breast cancer?

Obesity, measured by high body mass index (BMI >30 kg/m2) is associated with an increased risk of postmenopausal breast cancer but the effect of obesity on prognosis is not clear. A prospectively accrued and regularly validated database of 1579 patients with breast cancer treated in a district general hospital between 1963 and 1999 was analysed for clinical and pathological tumour characteristics including the family history, grade, tumour type, treatment and outcome. The risk factors and outcome of obese and non-obese patients were compared. Breast cancer in obese women was associated with si

Heterogeneity of daily pulmonary function in response to air pollution among asthmatic children.

Several epidemiological studies have demonstrated the association of short-term exposure to air pollution with transient declines in pulmonary function. Although the magnitudes of declines in pulmonary function found in these studies are relatively small, the effects vary among children. This study examined whether the variation is evidence of biological heterogeneity or due to random variation by analyzing data from a panel study of 83 asthmatic school children exposed to SO2 and PM10 in the Mae Moh district of Thailand. Daily pulmonary function testing was performed on the children for 61 da

Relative risk for genetic associations: the case-parent triad as a variant of case-cohort design.

The contribution of this paper is to conceptualize the case-parent triad within an epidemiological framework. We propose that the case-parent triad design is a variant of the case-cohort design. The affected offspring of case-parent triads come from a source cohort of all offspring of parents in a population. We first demonstrate that if the source cohort is restricted to offspring of a certain parental mating type then the relative risk in relation to genetic exposure can be estimated simply from the ratio of the number of exposed to the number of unexposed affected offspring. We then extend

The dioxin crisis as experiment to determine poultry-related campylobacter enteritis.

In June 1999, the dioxin crisis, caused by dioxin-contaminated feed components, exploded in Belgium, resulting in withdrawal of chicken and eggs from the market. Through the sentinel surveillance system, a decrease in Campylobacter infections during June 1999 was noticed. A model was generated with the reports from preceding years (1994 to 1998), and a prediction of the number of infections in 1999 was calculated. The model shows a significant decline (40%) in the number of infections, mainly because of the withdrawal of poultry. The use of a disaster as an epidemiologic tool offers a unique o

Can the recognition of living things really be selectively impaired?

Brain damage sometimes impairs recognition of living things relative to nonliving things. One interpretation of this dissociation is that recognition of living things depends on specialized mechanisms not used for the recognition of nonliving things; another is that patients have damage to a general purpose system, and recognition of living things taxes this system more heavily. Farah et al., (Neuropsychologia, Vol. 29, pp. 185-193, 1991 [7]) found that a set of general factors did not account for patients' impaired recognition of living things; thus they favored the specialized mechanisms acc

Modeling the complete spatiotemporal spread of the COVID-19 epidemic in mainland China.

OBJECTIVES: The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic is reaching its final phase in China. The epidemic data are available for a complete assessment of epidemiological parameters in all regions and time periods. METHODS: This study aims to present a spatiotemporal epidemic model based on spatially stratified heterogeneity (SSH) to simulate the epidemic spread. A susceptible-exposed/latent-infected-removed (SEIR) model was constructed for each SSH-identified stratum (each administrative city) to estimate the spatiotemporal epidemiological parameters of the outbreak. RESULTS: We estimated tha

The spread of pyrethroid-resistant mosquitoes and their predicted malaria burden across the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Malaria control in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is increasingly challenged by pyrethroid resistance in mosquito populations, although its epidemiological consequences remain uncertain. Entomological data from discriminating-dose bioassays conducted on wild mosquitoes were collated to characterise temporal changes in pyrethroid resistance since 2009. These estimates were incorporated into a mechanistic malaria transmission model to quantify how resistance may have reduced the effectiveness of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and affected malaria burden. Model projections were compa

Clinical Profile, Risk Factors, and Microbial Dysbiosis in Periodontitis: Findings from an Adult Cohort and Microbiome-Based Predictive Models.

Background/Objective: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease influenced by clinical, behavioral, and microbial determinants. However, the contribution of these factors to disease remains a topic of debate, particularly in untreated adult populations. This study aims to characterize the clinical, epidemiological, and microbial features associated with periodontitis in an adult cohort and to compare the discriminatory performance of microbiome-based predictive models with conventional clinical-behavioral models. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 943 adults. Periodontal s

Enhancing translation: A need to leverage complex preclinical models of addictive drugs to accelerate substance use treatment options.

Preclinical models of addictive drugs have been developed for decades to model aspects of the clinical experience in substance use disorders (SUDs). These include passive exposure as well as volitional intake models across addictive drugs and have been utilized to also measure withdrawal symptomatology and potential neurobehavioral mechanisms underlying relapse to drug seeking or taking. There are a number of Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medications for SUDs, however, many demonstrate low clinical efficacy as well as potential sex differences, and we also note gaps in the contin

Fragility Fractures in Postmenopausal Women: Development of 5-Year Prediction Models Using the FRISBEE Study.

CONTEXT: Individualized fracture risk may help to select patients requiring a pharmacological treatment for osteoporosis. FRAX and the Garvan fracture risk calculators are the most used tools, although their external validation has shown significant differences in their risk prediction ability. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: Using data from the Fracture Risk Brussels Epidemiological Enquiry study, a cohort of 3560 postmenopausal women aged 60 to 85 years, we aimed to construct original 5-year fracture risk prediction models using validated clinical risk factors (CRFs). Three models of competing risk

The convergence approach may be critical to improving early situational awareness in hostile radioactive environments.

This study explores the impact of a simulated radiological dispersal device (RDD) event in an urban area on young adults around 20 years old. The RDD releases radioactive Cs-137 (7.0E+3 Ci), a common industrial sterilization source. The study aims to demonstrate that combining computational codes and epidemiological models can produce valuable data to guide initial actions when confronting a hostile radioactive environment. The HotSpot Health Physics and RESRAD-RDD codes were used in the simulation to evaluate the event's initial phase. The codes were executed together, and the HotSpot output …
