Compensatory mechanisms in rats with nasal obstructions.

This study, in rats was designed to demonstrate the changes in respiratory dynamics in compensation for nasal obstructions. The experiment was performed on 30 rats. Fifteen rats served as the study group while another 10 rats served as controls. Five of the 30 rats were operated on to find out whether they would live and if so, for how long. Mouth breathing caused acute respiratory acidosis and marked aerophagia, leading to spontaneous death of the five experimental animals 90 to 100 hours postoperatively. Stenosis of the oropharyngeal airway due to palatal-epiglottic approximation, is suppose

Repurposing the angiotensin II receptor blocker valsartan to inhibit penicillin-binding protein 3 and its mutants in Haemophilus influenzae: a comprehensive in silico approach.

INTRODUCTION: Ampicillin-resistant Haemophilus influenzae (H. influenzae) has been recently designated as a medium-priority bacterial pathogen in 2024 by the World Health Organization (WHO). This pathogen is responsible for a wide range of infections, including sinusitis, acute otitis media, and pneumonia, as well as severe and life-threatening conditions such as bacteremia, meningitis, and epiglottitis. In this context, drug repurposing has emerged as an effective strategy, as the pharmacokinetic properties and safety profiles of approved drugs are already well established, allowing for faste…

Sensory detection of threshold intensity resistive loads in severe obstructive sleep apnoea.

Respiratory related evoked potentials (RREPs) were used to investigate whether sensory detection of small mid-inspiratory resistive loads (≈1.2-6.2 cmH2OL-1s), delivered during wakefulness, was impaired in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). It was reasoned that impaired detection of minor airway patency challenge may lead to difficult-to-remedy further collapse. There was a significant reduction in OSA (n=16) vs. control (n=17) participants in the slope of the relationship between the P1 RREP component amplitude, which reflects arrival of somatosensory information at the cortex, and stimulus inte

Description of original endoscopic findings and respiratory functional assessment using barometric whole-body plethysmography in dogs suffering from brachycephalic airway obstruction syndrome.

The clinical features of brachycephalic airway obstructive disease in 11 brachycephalic dogs are described in this study. The respiratory strategy was assessed before (n=11) and after (n=6) surgery using barometric whole-body plethysmography (BWBP), with the relationship between BWBP variables and the severity of the clinical signs assessed by the use of a respiratory score based on clinical, radiographic and endoscopic findings. Partial collapse of the left main bronchus was a common finding not previously described as part of the brachycephalic airway obstructive disease syndrome. Epiglottic

Genioglossal inspiratory activation: central respiratory vs mechanoreceptive influences.

Upper airway dilator muscles are phasically activated during respiration. We assessed the interaction between central respiratory drive and local (mechanoreceptive) influences upon genioglossal (GG) activity throughout inspiration. GG(EMG) and airway mechanics were measured in 16 awake subjects during baseline spontaneous breathing, increased central respiratory drive (inspiratory resistive loading; IRL), and decreased respiratory drive (hypocapnic negative pressure ventilation), both prior to and following dense upper airway topical anesthesia. Negative epiglottic pressure (P(epi)) was signif

Mucociliary transport pathway on laryngotracheal tract and stented glottis in guinea pigs.

We investigated the laryngotracheal mucociliary transport pathway of guinea pigs in vivo and immediately postmortem. Only intraperitoneal anesthesia was used during the procedure to avoid the disturbance of mucociliary function. Resin particles were used as the marking substance. A microcolpohysteroscope was placed at different levels in the laryngotracheal region for observing the marking particles and recording the transport pattern. The tracheal mucociliary transport flow primarily moved along the posterior wall and both lateral walls in a zigzag trace. Upon reaching the subglottis, the res

Prosthetic Knee Joint Infection with Haemophilus influenzae 1 Year After Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Haemophilus influenzae is a gram-negative bacterium that normally inhabits the mucosal surfaces of the upper-respiratory tract system of many healthy individuals. The capsular types of H. influenzae are found to be responsible of invasive infections such as meningitis, epiglottitis, orbital cellulitis, and bacteremia. H. influenzae is rarely described as a causative agent of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). Here, we report a case of H. influenzae causing prosthetic knee joint infection 1 year after total knee arthroplasty. CASE REPORT A 59-year-old woman was admitted with a 1-d…

Structure-based functional annotation of putative conserved proteins having lyase activity from Haemophilus influenzae.

Haemophilus influenzae is a small pleomorphic Gram-negative bacteria which causes several chronic diseases, including bacteremia, meningitis, cellulitis, epiglottitis, septic arthritis, pneumonia, and empyema. Here we extensively analyzed the sequenced genome of H. influenzae strain Rd KW20 using protein family databases, protein structure prediction, pathways and genome context methods to assign a precise function to proteins whose functions are unknown. These proteins are termed as hypothetical proteins (HPs), for which no experimental information is available. Function prediction of these p…
