Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the nasal cavity and nasopharynx in a child: A case report.

RATIONALE: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are rare neoplasms with only a few reported cases affecting the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and anterior skull base. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 12-year-old girl with a mass in her nose was admitted to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of Shenzhen Children's Hospital. She had a 4-month history of progressive, unilateral right nasal obstruction, unilateral mucopurulent rhinorrhea, foul nasal odor, snoring, hyposmia, occasional epistaxis, and no headache, no facial numbness, without eye swelling and vision loss. DIAGNOSE: A computed

[Rhinocerebral Mucormycosis].

Mucormycosis is a rare but serious type of fungal infection, which can progress rapidly especially in immunsupressed patients. We report about a 47 year old female patient with ptosis on the left eye. The ophthalmological report offered no further pathologic findings. Diabetes mellitus was known and the blood sugar value was very high.A computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses showed a shadow in the ethmoid bone and in an additonally performed MRI-scan, an increase of orbital fat and an extension of the ocular muscle were visible. As the patient lost her ability o look above, an operation of…

Basal encephalocele in an adult patient presenting with minor anomalies: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Basal encephalocele is rare in adults. Congenital and acquired cases have been reported with regard to the developmental mecha … in a 66-year-old Japanese man. On computed tomography, brain tissue protruded through a part of the ethmoid bone of his right anterior skull base, and it was diagnosed as transethmoidal-type basal encephalocele. Regarding his facial form, the distance between his bilateral eyeballs was large compared to his facial width, and his canthal index (defined as inner …

Accidental displacement and migration of endosseous implants into adjacent craniofacial structures: a review and update.

OBJECTIVES: Accidental displacement of endosseous implants into the maxillary sinus is an unusual but potential complication in implantology procedures due to the special features of the posterior aspect of the maxillary bone; there is also a possibility of migration throughout the upper paranasal sinuses and adjacent structures. The aim of this paper is to review the published literature about accidental displacement and migration of dental implants into the maxillary sinus and other adjacent structures. STUDY DESIGN: A review has been done based on a search in the main on-line medical datab

Surgical treatment and outcome of skull base meningiomas with extracranial extensions.

OBJECTIVE: Recurrent cranial base meningiomas occasionally extend into craniofacial structures, and are one of the most difficult tumors to surgically manage. We reviewed our experience of surgical treatment in a series of patients with meningiomas showing extensive extracranial extensions. METHODS: We surgically treated a total of 10 patients with recurrent cranial base meningiomas with large extension to multiple craniofacial structures. All patients underwent orbitozygomatic or zygomatic frontotemporal craniotomy for surgical resection of the tumor. An endoscopic endonasal technique was al

[Endoscopic decompression of optic canal].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of endoscope in the treatment of optic nerve injury. METHODS: Thirteen patients with fracture at the inner and lower walls of optical canal underwent endoscopic decompression. The posterior 1/3 of the middle concha, the posterior ethmoid sinus and sphenoid sinus were opened, chips of bone and old hematocele were scavenged, and the optic ring of the optic canal was polished; however, the sheath of the optic nerve remained intact. In 2 cases with the dura broken at the cranial part of optic nerve, the broken site was covered with mucosa of middle concha,

Nonepithelial tumors of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx. A clinicopathologic study. XIII: Meningiomas.

Twelve cases of meningiomas involving the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are reported. Meningiomas only rarely involve the upper respiratory tract; these 12 cases were found among the 566,000 surgical pathology cases that have been studied in this laboratory. In this series, five meningiomas probably arose in the cranial cavity and secondarily extended into the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Because radiographs demonstrated hyperostosis or bone destruction, three other tumors could have involved the cranial cavity, but this was never proven. In two other cases, the meningiomas appeare

Analysis of the development of human foetal nasal turbinates using CBCT imaging.

PURPOSE: The morphological structure of the nasal cavity (NC) is important for endoscopic surgical treatment. The location of nasal turbinates, including the superior turbinate (ST), middle turbinate (MT) and inferior turbinate (IT), are well presented during the formation of the human NC in cone beam CT (CBCT) images. There is a complex relationship between the nasal sinuses, the maxillary sinus (MS), ethmoidal sinus and sphenoid sinus, during formation of the NC structure at the morphological level. There is a need to clearly define the relationships of these nasal elements at the ossificati

Basaloid adenocarcinoma of the lacrimal sac: A rare entity and approach to management.

Presented is a rare case of basaloid adenocarcinoma of the lacrimal sac. Low grade features of this malignancy permitted a conservative surgical approach to maximize functional and cosmetic outcomes. This is retrospective case description of a single 77-year-old-female patient who underwent a dacryocystorhinostomy with silicone tubes at an outside hospital for epiphora, but was referred to the Wills Eye Hospital Oculoplastics Department for a lacrimal sac biopsy showing low-grade carcinoma with basaloid features. She was treated with complete excision of the mass, common canaliculus and distal

Frontoethmoidal encephalomeningocele: new morphological findings and a new classification.

Given a lack of a comprehensive classification for the frontoethmoidal encephalomeningocele (FEEM), clinical, photographic, and computed tomography (CT) data of 23 nonoperated patients were reviewed. Extracranial pathological findings of interest included herniation masses, facial deformities, and frontonasal bone morphology. Intracranial pathological findings of interest included morphology of the anterior cranial floor and brain malformations. Stereographic software processed data from a new-generation CT scanner into three-dimensional pictures that revealed some interesting morphological fi

Orbital deformity after craniofacial fracture repair: avoidance and treatment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To achieve the optimal preoperative appearance following craniofacial fracture repair, the surgeon must be facile in the most sophisticated reconstructive techniques and able to determine their application. The purpose of this article is to describe the common deformities following such repairs, outline a strategy to avoid them, and review the surgical techniques to correct them. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The deformities are categorized by the anatomic zones of the orbit, i.e., zygomatic, frontal, and nasoethmoidal, affected by low-, middle-, and high-energy impact. Th

Endoscopic reconstruction of frontal, cribiform and ethmoid skull base defects.

Endoscopic skull base reconstruction (ESBR) is an established option for complete reconstruction of the anterior skull base (ASB). While free mucosal grafts are still relevant for limited defects (<10 mm), the evolution of vascular flaps has extended the limits of reconstruction with up to 94% success in defect closure and avoidance of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak. This article discusses the planning and execution in ESBR for anterior fossa defects. Factors influencing the choice of reconstruction (flap location, size, influence of raised intracranial pressure, high flow CSF leak, radiothera

Anatomical variation of the nasal septum: Correlation among septal components.

The nasal septum consists of multiple components with various developmental origins and is considered a mosaic structure. Few studies have focused on anatomical relationships among the components of the nasal septum, even though they are essential for clinical assessments of morphological abnormalities in the nasal septum. This study was performed to evaluate anatomical correlations among components of the nasal septum using computed tomography (CT) of the paranasal sinus. We studied images from CT scans of 168 paranasal sinuses collected at a secondary referral hospital between July 2008 and

Relationship between the superior attachment type of uncinate process and presence of agger nasi cell: a computer-assisted anatomic study.

OBJECTIVE: The uncinate process (UP) is an important anatomic landmark in frontal recess surgery. Its superior attachment shows great anatomic variability. The agger nasi (AN) cell is another important structure that affects frontal recess anatomy and there is a close neighborhood between them. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between superior attachment type of UP and the presence of AN cell. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective anatomical study. METHOD: Computed tomography scans were evaluated of 486 sides of 243 patients who had had paranasal sinus. In 125 (26%) sides, t

Anterior encephaloceles: a series of 103 cases over 32 years.

Anterior encephalocele is a rarely reported CNS malformation with a geographical predilection for South-East Asia. The paucity of literature prompted us to analyse our results with hemiorbital advancement and classical Tessier's operation in 103 cases over 32 years (1971-2002). In our series, the frontoethmoidal subtype was the most common (80%), followed by the orbital (8%), transethmoidal (8%), transsellar (3%) and interfrontal types (1%). All patients with classical frontoethmoidal encephalocele had swelling over the nose or inner canthus since birth, with varying degrees of hypertelorism;

The relationship between the sphenoid and the posterior ethmoid sinuses and the optic nerves in Turkish patients.

The sphenoid and the posterior ethmoid sinuses are surrounded by more vital structures than any other sinus. With the widespread acceptance and expanding role of endoscopic sinus surgery, a proper understanding of the anatomy of the sphenoid and the posterior ethmoid sinuses is achieved. We reviewed 100 CT studies of the paranasal sinuses belonging to patients examined for a chronic inflammatory disease of the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses. The relationship between the optic nerves and the paranasal sinuses is classified into four discrete categories. Type 1 with a proportion of 64% i
