Navigating the perfect storm: balancing a culture of safety with workforce challenges.

Balancing the development of cultures of safety with nursing workforce challenges is similar to navigating the perfect storm. The perfect storm is characterized as a tempest of extreme intensity that happens rarely, maybe once every 100 years, as a result of multiple factors that end in a situation worse than people have ever seen. Such a storm is currently evident when attempting to ensure patient safety while being confronted with a shortage of nurses and nursing faculty unlike any other shortage experienced in over a number of decades. Based on research, the threats to patient safety from h

Safety and Risks of Antihypertensive Medications During Breastfeeding: A Review of Current Guidelines.

Hypertension disorders of pregnancy affect almost 10% of pregnancies. Most hypertensive disorders associated with pregnancy, including chronic hypertension and gestational hypertension, often persist into the postpartum period. Thus, many breastfeeding mothers require ongoing antihypertensive treatment with antihypertensive medications while nursing. This highlights the importance of understanding the efficacy, safety, and potential adverse effects of antihypertensive therapy in breastfeeding mothers. Unfortunately, research in this area is limited, and references in clinical guidelines remain

Successful implementation of an evidence-based clinical practice guideline: acute dysuria/urgency in adult women.

This paper describes the development and successful implementation of an evidence-based clinical practice guideline dealing with uncomplicated urinary tract infection in adult women (acute dysuria guideline). This guideline was based on an evaluation and synthesis of the medical literature using the best available evidence. Following guideline implementation, clinical practice changes recommended by the guideline were observed, including a significant decrease in laboratory testing and clinic visits for acute dysuria. Successful implementation of this guideline is attributed to the use of an e

Sustainable pressure injury prevention.

The quality department used adaptive leadership and the plan-do-study-act cycle to decrease pressure injury (PI) rates. After identifying gaps, the pressure injury prevention bundle was developed and implemented to bring evidence-based nursing practice to frontline nurses. Organisational rates of PI was followed for 4 years (2019-2022) and a smaller subset of 88 patients were followed in the prospective arm. Using statistical analysis, the decrease in PI rates (90%) and severity is significant (p<0.5) and sustained compared with the year prior to interventions.

Blood Pressure Screening in Faith Communities: A Quality Improvement Project.

There is a direct relationship between elevated blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, so screening for elevated blood pressure is an essential nursing activity. This quality improvement project involving faith community nurses (FCNs) in 24 congregations and other sites tracked readings of blood pressures taken, referrals made, and education sessions provided during a 21-month period. Surveys revealed the project increased participants' awareness about screenings, FCN services, and evidence-based protocols, in addition to identifying high-risk congregants for care and treatment.

Changes in gut microbiota and metabolism associated with phenotypic plasticity in the honey bee Apis mellifera.

Honey bees exhibit an elaborate social structure based in part on an age-related division of labor. Young workers perform tasks inside the hive, while older workers forage outside the hive, tasks associated with distinct diets and metabolism. Critical to colony fitness, the work force can respond rapidly to changes in the environment or colony demography and assume emergency tasks, resulting in young foragers or old nurses. We hypothesized that both task and age affect the gut microbiota consistent with changes to host diet and physiology. We performed two experiments inducing precocious forag

Applicability of acceptance and commitment therapy-based mobile app in depression nursing.

Due to the high burden of depression, new models and methods of mental healthcare need to be developed. Prior research has shown the potential benefits of using technology tools such as mobile apps as self-help or combined with psychological treatment. Therefore, professionals should acquaint themselves with evidence-based apps to be able to use them with clients and guide the clients in their use. The purpose of this study was to explore how an acceptance and commitment therapy-based mobile app was perceived as a self-management tool among nurses, and how it could be applied in the prevention
