Eruptive superficial porokeratosis in a patient with nephrotic syndrome.

A 34-year-old female was referred to our department, complaining of multiple asymptomatic lesions that appeared two weeks previously. The patient had active nephritis with nephrotic syndrome and was treated with immunosuppressive therapies. Physical examination revealed multiple well-circumscribed rounds of flat brownish plaques with slightly elevated borders, some of which were covered by scales. The number of lesions was nine in total. Skin biopsy specimens showed dyskeratotic cells in the thinned epidermis with cornoid lamella, and the absence of a granular cell layer. The development of po

DRUG-INDUCED HYPERSENSITIVITY SYNDROME CAUSED BY LAMOTRIGINE, A CASE REPORT.

Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome, also known as drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS), is an under-recognized and potentially life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction associated with a variety of medications, many of them anti-epileptics. Patients with DRESS syndrome typically present with rash, swelling, fever, and systemic manifestations. We report a case of a patient admitted to out hospital after the administration of an anticonvulsive drug lamotrigine. She was presented with high fever, rash, face oedema and elevated liver enzymes. At admiss

The Sting of a White Flannel Moth Caterpillar (Norape ovina).

The purpose of this report is to describe a case of urticarial dermatitis, or erucism, caused by the white flannel moth caterpillar (Norape ovina) in central Virginia. Many caterpillars are known to cause erucism, with the puss caterpillar (Megalopyge opercularis) being the most reported culprit in the United States. White flannel moth caterpillars are expected to cause erucism as they belong to the same family as the puss caterpillar (Megalopygidae) and have similar venom-containing hairs, but no reports of the reaction or clinical course have been documented in the medical literature. A subj

Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Phototherapy versus Non-LED Phototherapy Devices for Hyperbilirubinemia in Neonates: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

This review was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of light-emitting diode (LED) phototherapy as compared with the conventional phototherapy in neonates with unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia and their adverse effects. We searched the following databases right from their inception till April, 2021: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and LILACS. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing the LED phototherapy with other light sources, which enrolled newborns (term and preterm) with unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia were included. We included 21 articles in this review. The treatment with the LED li

Efficacy and safety of spesolimab in Asian patients with a generalized pustular psoriasis flare: Results from the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Effisayil™ 1 study.

Generalized pustular psoriasis is a potentially life-threatening neutrophilic skin disease characterized by recurrent flares of widespread erythema and eruption of sterile pustules. In the Effisayil™ 1 study (NCT03782792), 53 patients with a generalized pustular psoriasis flare were treated with placebo or spesolimab, a humanized anti-interleukin-36 receptor monoclonal antibody, the first targeted treatment to be studied in a randomized clinical trial. Spesolimab treatment resulted in rapid pustular and skin clearance, with an acceptable safety profile. Here, we evaluate the efficacy and safet

Hand, foot, and mouth disease in adults caused by Coxsackievirus B1-B6.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a viral rickettsial disease caused by Coxsackievirus A16 and Enterovirus 71 in most cases. It is commonly seen in children under ten years old, who present oral enanthema and a macular, maculopapular, or vesicular rash on their hands and feet. However, an increase in cases caused by other viral serotypes was observed in adults in recent years with various clinical presentations and a troublesome diagnosis. Three cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease are reported to show the clinical variability and diagnostic complexity that this disease may present in adult p

Sulfasalazine-induced drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) with concomitant acute chikungunya virus infection: possible role of new viral trigger.

Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) is designated as a potentially lethal adverse drug effect with characteristic signs and symptoms such as skin rash, fever, leucocytosis with eosinophilia or atypical lymphocytes, lymphadenopathy and liver or renal dysfunction. In addition to most commonly implicated drug category (aromatic anticonvulsants), lamotrigine, sulfonamides, dapsone and abacavir may also induce this syndrome. We describe here a case a sulfasalazine-induced DRESS with coexisting chikungunya fever. The shared presentation of fever with rash in both conditions

COVID toes: Pernio-like lesions.

More than 40 million people have been infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 since the first infection was reported in December 2019 from Wuhan, China. Multiple reports of cutaneous manifestations of the virus have been described, including a pernio-like eruption, recently termed "COVID toes." We have reviewed the published case series on "COVID toes" in addition to studies identifying possible pathogenic mechanisms behind the eruption.

Rare complications of chicken pox in immunocompetent children: Acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease caused by varicella zoster virus. Fever and papulovesicular rash are hallmarks of this disease. These manifestations are self-liming and complete recovery is seen in most cases. We report two cases of chickenpox infection where the rare and atypical manifestations of acute respiratory distress syndrome with pleural effusion were seen.
