Development of a machine learning-based prediction model for acute kidney injury associated with respiratory failure in the intensive care unit.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent and severe complication in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with respiratory failure, associated with high mortality, prolonged hospitalization, and substantial healthcare burden. Conventional risk scores, such as SOFA and APACHE II, are not optimized for AKI prediction in this heterogeneous population. This study aimed to develop and validate an early AKI prediction model using machine learning. We analyzed 10,780 adult ICU patients with unspecified respiratory failure from the MIMIC-IV database, of whom 53.96% developed AKI according to KDIGO criteri

Machine Learning-Based Prediction of Gout Using Polygenic Risk Scores and Clinical Variables: A Korean Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of gout, a chronic metabolic disease, has recently increased. Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) represent a useful tool for predicting patient outcomes of this condition. However, the clinical utility of PRS in disease prediction remains controversial. METHODS: Using data from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study, machine learning (ML) models were developed to predict gout based on PRS and clinical variables such as uric acid, lifestyle habits, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) profiles. Five supervised learning algorithms were applied: logistic regression (a tradition

Brain tumor recognition by an optimized deep network utilizing ammended grasshopper optimization.

Brain tumors are abnormal cell masses that can get originated in the brain spread from other organs. They can be categorized as either malignant (cancerous) or benign (noncancerous), and their growth rates and locations can impact the functioning of the nerve system. The timely detection of brain tumors is crucial for effective treatment and prognosis. In this study, a new approach has been proposed for diagnosing brain tumors using deep learning and a meta-heuristic algorithm. The method involves three main steps: (1) extracting features from brain MRI images using AlexNet, (2) reducing the c

Heart murmur detection based on wavelet transformation and a synergy between artificial neural network and modified neighbor annealing methods.

Early recognition of heart disease plays a vital role in saving lives. Heart murmurs are one of the common heart problems. In this study, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is trained with Modified Neighbor Annealing (MNA) to classify heart cycles into normal and murmur classes. Heart cycles are separated from heart sounds using wavelet transformer. The network inputs are features extracted from individual heart cycles, and two classification outputs. Classification accuracy of the proposed model is compared with five multilayer perceptron trained with Levenberg-Marquardt, Extreme-learning-machin

Multistage Electrocardiographic Profiling for Mental Stress-Induced Myocardial Ischemia in Women: A Prospective, Age-Matched Cohort Study in China.

BACKGROUND: Mental stress-induced myocardial ischemia is often clinically silent and associated with increased cardiovascular risk, particularly in women. Conventional ECG-based detection is limited, while the reference standard, positron emission tomography/computed tomography, is costly and less accessible. We aimed to characterize mental stress-induced myocardial ischemia using multistage ECG analysis and machine learning to improve early, noninvasive detection. METHODS: We enrolled 2 female cohorts (18-75 years) from a single-center tertiary hospital in Guangzhou, China: a study cohort (2

Applications of artificial intelligence in drug discovery for neurological diseases.

Neurological disease encompasses over 1000 disorders, exacts a massive human health and financial toll as well as being a story of extremes. At one end are diseases that are complex and heterogeneous affecting millions, while at the other there are monogenic and rare diseases, with a handful of individuals. What are absent are drugs that can treat or cure the disease. Discovering these is challenging, held back by extreme costs to develop them or in some cases by the limited understanding of the diseases. After decades of drug discovery research there is now considerable data available which c
