[Diagnosis of facial pain: a clinical experience].

A sample of 228 patients with facial pain is reported in the present paper. Among them, 112 cases are typical idiopathic trigeminal neuralgias, 111 are cases of secondary facial pain (including 7 cases symptomatic trigeminal neuralgias) and 5 patients were classified as vascular facial pain. Among the 119 cases of clinically diagnosed trigeminal neuralgias there were 112 (94, 11%) with no evidence of organic cause. Only 7 cases (5.89%) were identified as organic, including 3 cases of bulbar and pontic vascular lesions, 2 cases of iatrogenic injuries following neurosurgery, 1 case of meningioma

Blunt carotid artery dissection: incidence, associated injuries, screening, and treatment.

Blunt carotid dissection (BCD) is a rare injury occurring in less than one in 1,000 victims of blunt injuries. Using a 4-year experience in a trauma system with 14 cases of BCD, we performed a matched blunt trauma patient case-control analysis to determine if there were patterns of injuries that were associated with increased risk of BCD. Patients with combinations of head, facial, and cervical spine injuries with or without extremity fractures proved to be at significantly increased risk for BCD. Duplex scanning appears to be a useful screening tool for these patients. Anticoagulation was the

Valproic Acid Promotes Survival of Facial Motor Neurons in Adult Rats After Facial Nerve Transection: a Pilot Study.

Valproic acid (VPA), a medication primarily used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder, has been applied to the repair of central and peripheral nervous system injury. The present study investigated the effect of VPA on functional recovery, survival of facial motor neurons (FMNs), and expression of proteins in rats after facial nerve trunk transection by functional measurement, Nissl staining, TUNEL, immunofluorescence, and Western blot. Following facial nerve injury, all rats in group VPA showed a better functional recovery, which was significant at the given time, compared with group NS. Th

Epidemiological and Surgical Insights Into Concomitant Ocular and Craniofacial Trauma and the Implications for Combined Face and Whole-eye Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Concomitant ocular and facial trauma (COFT) can result in devastating functional, aesthetic, and psychosocial consequences, including vision loss. Standard reconstructive techniques often fall short in addressing the intricate needs of these injuries, making advanced techniques, such as combined facial transplantation and whole-eye transplantation (FT-WET), promising solutions. This study characterizes COFT patients to define a population that may benefit from FT-WET. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the National Trauma Data Bank (2018-2022) was conducted to identify COFT pati

Case Report of Unusual Facial Swelling in an 8-Month-Old.

UNLABELLED: Rhabdomyolysis is a potentially life-threatening disease defined by the release of intracellular contents into the body's circulation after muscle damage. It is most commonly seen in adult patients who present with crush injuries, overexertion, or prolonged immobility due to drug and/or alcohol overdose. Fortunately, it is rare in young children. We present the case of an 8-month-old girl with progressively worsening right-sided facial swelling that was associated with significant drooling and intraoral edema. The patient had been found lying prone and wedged between a mattress and

Surgical anatomy of the facial nerve: from middle cranial fossa approach to endoscopic approach. A pictorial review.

PURPOSE: The pathology of the facial nerve is extremely varied and extensive knowledge of the surgical anatomy in different approaches is required to manage it. During the last 15 years, the development of endoscopic ear surgery has significantly changed anatomical concepts, introducing new surgical approaches. The aim of this review is to illustrate five different surgical approaches to the facial nerve: the endoscopic approach, the middle cranial fossa approach, two translabyrinthine approaches (one simple and one endoscopic-assisted) with decompression of the whole petrous portion of the fa

The facial nerve: anatomy and associated disorders for oral health professionals.

The facial nerve, the seventh cranial nerve, is of great clinical significance to oral health professionals. Most published literature either addresses the central connections of the nerve or its peripheral distribution but few integrate both of these components and also highlight the main disorders affecting the nerve that have clinical implications in dentistry. The aim of the current study is to provide a comprehensive description of the facial nerve. Multiple aspects of the facial nerve are discussed and integrated, including its neuroanatomy, functional anatomy, gross anatomy, clinical pr

Iatrogenic facial nerve palsy: lessons to learn.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to review the management and discuss the outcome of patients with iatrogenic facial nerve palsy. METHODS: 11 patients with iatrogenic facial nerve palsy (FNP) were evaluated retrospectively in a tertiary centre between June 1995 and September 2008. All the cases were referred from other centres. RESULTS: Ten patients had iatrogenic immediate FNP secondary to mastoidectomy and one had FNP secondary to superficial parotidectomy. Of the ten cases, three had concomitant profound sensorineural hearing loss and one had concomitant labyrinthine fistula. Ten patients un

Current and evolving trends in the management of facial fractures.

The oral and maxillofacial region has a complex regional anatomy including hard and soft tissues. Trauma in this region may affect the airway, cause potentially life threatening bleeding and head injuries. The senses of olfaction, sight and hearing can also be disrupted as well as a profound psychological impact following disfigurement. This oral and maxillofacial trauma update provides information on demographics, incidence, pathophysiology, diagnosis, fracture patterns and management of facial trauma. It also discusses the role of new advancements in the management of facial trauma.

Subcutaneous and Orbital Emphysema With Pneumocephalus Secondary to Compressed-Air Gun Injury to the Face.

Compressed-air guns-devices that remove particles such as dust or wood/metal shavings using compressed air-are now widely used in industry. Although rare, the high-speed airflow they generate can cause injuries. A healthy 26-year-old man presented to our emergency department with swelling around his right eye and headache. His history revealed that the injury occurred during routine use of a compressed-air gun while cleaning work clothes. The blast of compressed air to his face resulted in subcutaneous emphysema, orbital emphysema, and pneumocephalus. No obvious entry site for the air could be

Extensive, traumatic fractures of the orbit in war and peace time.

Traumatic fractures of the orbit are fairly frequent injuries both in wartime and in peacetime. Most often they are part of facial injuries but they can also be isolated. They are followed by numerous symptoms such as eye dislocation, enophthalmos, double vision, and often by various injuries of eye accessory organs. The conservative treatment of these injuries has been mostly abandoned. Surgical therapy--that is, the reconstruction of the original orbital shape and volume as well as repositioning of orbital contents to their previous position--has to be performed as soon as possible. In cases…

Common soccer injuries. Diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.

Soccer is a game with worldwide appeal. Increasing numbers of participants are members of all age groups and skill levels. The game presents to the sports medicine practitioner a wide variety of musculoskeletal and medical problems. Soccer injuries increase in frequency as the age of participant increases, with a low incidence of injury in preadolescent players. Musculoskeletal injuries most commonly affect the lower extremities and include contusions, acute and chronic musculotendinous strains, and ligamentous injuries to the knee and ankle. Most injuries are minor and respond to analgesics,

Ice hockey injuries. A review.

Ice hockey is a fast-paced game involving both finesse and controlled aggression. Injuries are related to direct trauma (80%) and overuse (20%), with high puck velocities, aggressive stick use, and body checking (collisions) accounting for most of these. A participant can anticipate an injury after playing 7 to 100 hours of hockey, depending on his age, and most injuries are caused during the actual game rather than during practice. Although facial injuries are common, they are decreasing because of adequate use of helmets and masks. Conversely, cervical spine injuries are being reported more …

The spectrum and burden of ocular injury.

The authors conducted a hospital-based study to ascertain basic, descriptive epidemiologic information about ocular trauma in an urban setting. Over a 6-month period, 3184 patients presenting to our emergency ward with ocular trauma were studied. Severe injuries totaled 5.1% (ruptured globe, intraocular foreign body, hyphema, orbital/facial fracture) and 94.9% were superficial injuries and contusions. A disproportionate burden of severe ocular injury was borne by those less than 15 years of age. The work place accounted for 48% of all injuries and 50% of ruptured globes. Automobile repair-rela

Equestrian-related maxillofacial injuries-a five-year retrospective review.

BACKGROUND: Equestrian-related activities inherently involve the risk of serious injury. There are few reports of maxillofacial injury patterns and management arising from equestrian activities in the literature. AIMS: To investigate maxillofacial fracture presentations at a tertiary trauma centre to identify injury profiles of patients who have sustained equine-based injuries over 5 years. METHODS: This work involved a retrospective review of all trauma presentations to our unit over 5 years. The data collected included patient demographics, injury mechanisms and patterns, and management of

[Accuracy of the prognostic diagnosis in acute peripheral facial palsy].

The important factors in the prognostic diagnosis of acute peripheral facial palsy are (1) the causal disease, (2) the site of injury and (3) the degree of injury, although the age of the patient, complication, treatment method and initial day of treatment are also important. Among these 3 factors, the degree of injury is most strongly related to the prognosis. However, the diagnosis of etiology is the most important for the selection of the treatment method. Above all, the differential diagnosis between Bell's palsy and zoster sine herpete (Ramsay Hunt syndrome), is the most significant. Howe
