A pilot study of factors associated with resilience to substance abuse in adolescent sons of alcoholic fathers.

This pilot study evaluated the association between substance abuse outcome and putative protective factors in sons of alcoholic fathers. A battery of questionnaires was anonymously self-administered to 24 sons of alcoholic fathers ages 16-19 years to identify relationships between alcohol and/or drug abuse and factors hypothesized to be related to parental alcoholism. Of the 24 subjects, 13 were categorized through self-identification and self-report screening measures as having alcohol and/or drug problems and 11 were categorized as not having substance abuse problems. Boys without substance

Early life stress, negative paternal relationships, and chemical intolerance in middle-aged women: support for a neural sensitization model.

This study (ntotal = 35) compared early life stress ratings, parental relationships, and health status, notably orthostatic blood pressures, of middle-aged women with low-level chemical intolerance (CI group) and depression, depressives without CI (DEP group), and normals. Environmental chemical intolerance is a symptom of several controversial conditions in which women are overrepresented, that is, sick building syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia. Previous investigators have postulated that people with CI have variants of somatization disorder,

Exploring the connection between maternal mental health and partnership, parental role, and satisfaction with various aspects of life using pairfam data: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Decreased maternal mental health leads to difficulties for the mother herself and for her family life. In Germany, inpatient mother-/father-child preventive and rehabilitation clinics are addressing these parental health problems. Further analysis, however, is needed in order to better understand the origins of impaired parental health and to improve the interventions. The present study focuses on maternal mental health and its association with strains related to mothers' parental role, their partnership, and satisfaction with various aspects of life. METHODS: For this cross-secti

The Evaluation of a Family-Engagement Approach to Increase Physical Activity, Healthy Nutrition, and Well-Being in Children and Their Parents.

Prevention programs often are directed at either parents or children separately, thereby ignoring the intergenerational aspect of health and well-being. Engaging the family is likely to improve both the uptake and long-term impact of health behavior change. We integrated an intergenerational approach into a frequently used shared assessment tool for children's care needs. The current study's aim was 2-fold: to monitor this family-engagement tool's effects on both children and their parents' health behaviors and well-being, and to examine the different dynamics of health behavioral change withi

A prospective longitudinal study of the associations between childhood and adolescent interpersonal experiences and adult attachment orientations.

Attachment theory (Bowlby, 1973, 1980, 1969/1982) suggests that early interpersonal experiences lay the foundation for the ways people think, feel, and behave in close relationships throughout life. The present study examined this fundamental assumption, analyzing longitudinal data collected from 705 participants and their families over 3 decades, from the time participants were infants until they were approximately 30 years old (Mage = 28.6, SD = 1.2; 78.7% White, non-Hispanic, 53.6% female, 46.4% male). We examined the associations between early levels and growth (or changes) in the quality

Somatic disease burden in parents of children with cancer - a nationwide cohort study in Sweden.

OBJECTIVE: A diagnosis of childhood cancer is profoundly devastating for families, with well-recognized effects on parental mental health. However, its impact on parental somatic health remains poorly understood, particularly regarding potential long-term cumulative burden. These persistent somatic diseases require frequent clinic visits for ongoing management and adversely affect parents' quality of life. METHODS: Using several Swedish national registers, we identified biological parents of children diagnosed with cancer before age 14 between January 1, 1987, and December 31, 2016, and match

Parental history of psychiatric disorders and risk of type 1 diabetes in the offspring.

OBJECTIVE: To examine risk of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in the offspring of parents with a psychiatric history at the birth of the child, which would suggest potential shared familial or environmental risk factors between T1DM and psychiatric disorders. METHODS: We established a cohort including all children born in Sweden in 1997-2016, and their parents. Children were followed up from birth until 31 Dec 2017, using national registers. Relative risk for T1DM was estimated by incidence rate ratios (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI), calculated from Poisson regression. We examined ps

Discriminant analysis and logistic regression on genetic history and environmental factors in children with asthma.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is known to be related to genetic and environmental factors, we aimed to identify the predictors discriminating between children with asthma and a control group in order to build typical profiles of these children. METHODS: A multidimensional analysis covered children (58 with asthma and 217 as control group), under 17 years of age, involving environmental variables and medical history of these children and their families. RESULTS: Chi-square tests highlighted significant links between variables as rhinitis and conjunctivitis (P<0.001). The results showed, in group of asth

Multidimensional analysis of genetic background and environmental factors: Cases of atopy in asthmatic children.

The present work aimed, through a multidimensional analysis of a data set related to 76 asthmatic children (2-16 years), to their family, and to their antecedents, to establish typical profiles of children with asthma, combining similar or even identical characteristics. A questionnaire was presented to the parents concerning possible consanguinity, prematurity of the child, birth order, skin prick test results, presence of animals, indoor dampness, medical history, and cases of atopy among the children and their antecedents. The links between variables were first identified by means of chi-sq

Parental encouragement of dieting promotes daughters' early dieting.

Dieting to lose weight is common among female adolescents. This research investigated the association between maternal and paternal encouragement to diet and their daughters' self-reported "early dieting" (prior to age 11 y) and adolescent dieting (between 11 y and 15 y), and how parental encouragement to diet is related to changes in daughters' BMI percentiles. Participants in this study were 174 non-Hispanic white girls and their parents, assessed when daughters were 9-, 11-, 13-, and 15 y. The Parent Encouragement of Child Weight Loss Scale was used to measure encouragement to diet. Logisti

A study of descriptive data for orphans and non-orphans on key criteria of economic vulnerability in two municipalities in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: It is generally assumed that orphan status increases the risk to children of a range of negative outcomes. In South Africa, death of parents due to HIV-related illness is contributing to a rapid increase in the prevalence of orphans. This paper presents descriptive data from two South African communities, namely Kopanong, in the Free State and Kanana in the North West province, characterising the differences between orphans (double, maternal and paternal) and non-orphans on key criteria of social vulnerability. OBJECTIVES: The objective was to obtain a better understanding of how

Pediatric acquired immunodeficiency syndrome with negative human immunodeficiency virus antibody response by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blot.

A 5-month-old white girl having persistent oral candidiasis was brought to medical attention because of acute respiratory distress, pneumonia, and hypoxia that worsened despite supportive care and antibiotics. Bronchial lavage fluid yielded Pneumocystis carinii. The diagnosis of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) was suspected, although enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western blot tests were both negative for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibody. Immunologic evaluation included the following results: a low normal CD4/CD8 ratio 0.88, CD4 lymphocytes 493/microL, and e
