Ready-to-Use School Meals in Northern Ghana Are a Viable Alternative to Traditional School Meals.

School feeding provides nutrition, brings order to the school day, and enhances student participation. School feeding in low-income countries is often sporadic due to coordination challenges among multiple stakeholders. To assess the reliability of school feeding in Mion district, a food-insecure area in northern Ghana, Project Peanut Butter (PPB) studied ready-to-use school meals (RUSMs) and micronutrient-fortified home-grown school food (HGSF). The school meals were initially provided daily in elementary schools and then extended to junior high schools. The key elements of functional program

Impact of a Hospital-Based Food Pharmacy Program on Health Outcomes of Vulnerable Patients.

Access to healthy foods, especially for those who are living with diabetes and hypertension, is crucial in managing these chronic diseases. This study evaluates the implementation of a food pharmacy and food prescription program at a safety-net hospital that serves vulnerable populations. Patients who screen as food insecure using the USDA adult food security survey receive a referral from the physician to the food pharmacy program where a dietician reviews their dietary requirements based on their chronic disease and develops a diet plan. Patients then receive fresh produce, meats and other p

Dietary diversity and its associated factors among adolescent girls in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Even though fragmented and inconsistent findings have been reported in Ethiopia, adolescence is a period of rapid growth following infancy and is severely affected by micronutrient deficiencies, food insecurity, and poor-quality diets. Therefore, the aim of this meta-analysis was to estimate the pooled prevalence of dietary diversity and its associated factors among adolescent girls in Ethiopia. METHODS: International databases such as EMBASE, Hinari, Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, and direct Google searches were systematically used to search for articles and reports. The Newcast…

Community governance and nutrition-oriented cancer care for women: policy pathways to reduce survival disparities.

Nutrition is increasingly recognized as a modifiable determinant of treatment tolerance, metabolic health, quality of life, and survivorship outcomes among women with cancer. However, nutrition-oriented cancer care is often delivered as an individual-level clinical recommendation, while many determinants of dietary behavior and nutritional vulnerability arise outside oncology clinics. Food insecurity, unequal food environments, limited dietitian availability, fragmented referral systems, low nutrition literacy, transport barriers, and gendered caregiving roles can prevent women with breast, ce…

Food Addiction and Tobacco Use Disorder: Common Liability and Shared Mechanisms.

As food addiction is being more commonly recognized within the scientific community, parallels can be drawn between it and other addictive substance use disorders, including tobacco use disorder. Given that both unhealthy diets and smoking are leading risk factors for disability and death, a greater understanding of how food addiction and tobacco use disorder overlap with one another is necessary. This narrative review aimed to highlight literature that investigated prevalence, biology, psychology, and treatment options of food addiction and tobacco use disorder. Published studies up to August

Screening for marginal food security in young children in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Household food insecurity (FI), even at marginal levels, is associated with poor child health outcomes. The Nutrition Screening Tool for Every Preschooler (NutriSTEP®) is a valid and reliable 17-item parent-completed measure of nutrition risk and includes a single item addressing FI which may be a useful child-specific screening tool. We evaluated the diagnostic test properties of the single NutriSTEP® FI question using the 2-item Hunger Vital Sign™ as the criterion measure in a primary care population of healthy children ages 18 months to 5 years. RESULTS: The sample included 117…

When safety competes with nutrition: maternal dietary diversity and coping strategies in conflict-affected Sokoto State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Maternal dietary diversity is a critical indicator of micronutrient adequacy, yet it remains severely compromised in conflict-affected settings. In north-western Nigeria, persistent insecurity disrupts food systems, livelihoods, and market access, exacerbating maternal nutritional vulnerability. This study examines the determinants of maternal dietary diversity among pregnant and lactating women in conflict-affected areas of Sokoto State. METHODS: A convergent mixed-methods design was employed. Quantitative data were collected from 768 women using structured questionnaires incorpor
