Adolescent and adult age differences in palatable food learning and consumption.

Adolescents are sensitive to food rewards and are at a risk of developing binge and other eating disorders. Adolescence is also a period of rapid learning. It is known that food memories can motivate appetite and food seeking without hunger, and food cues can induce relapse of extinguished behaviors. Yet, little is known about how adolescents learn about palatable food cues under hunger and satiety, and if males and females differ. The current study investigated Pavlovian conditioning, extinction, and context-induced renewal of cue-food associations, as well as palatable food consumption, in h

Food Effect on Rosuvastatin Disposition and Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol.

Rosuvastatin is commonly prescribed for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and hepatic transporter-mediated accumulation in the liver enhances its efficacy. Current guidelines indicate no preference for fed or fasted rosuvastatin administration. We investigated the association between food intake and rosuvastatin disposition in healthy subjects and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)-lowering effects among patients taking rosuvastatin. We demonstrate that administration with food resulted in a near 40% reduction of rosuvastatin exposure in healthy Asian (n = 12) and Caucasian (n = 1

Dietary Therapy in Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE): A Practical Approach to Elimination.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide an overview of current dietary elimination strategies for eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and propose a practical, patient-centered approach to guide dietary therapy. RECENT FINDINGS: Empiric elimination diets, including one- (1FED), two- (2FED), four- (4FED), and six-food (6FED) elimination strategies, have demonstrated varying efficacy, with broader elimination generally associated with higher histologic remission rates. Elemental diets remain the most effective but are often impractical. Allergy testing-directed diets have limited utility due to poor predictive

The Therapeutic Pipeline for Eosinophilic Esophagitis: Current Landscape and Future Directions.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) has emerged as a major cause of dysphagia and food impaction worldwide. This narrative review traces the evolving therapeutic pipeline for EoE, highlighting agents spanning from late-stage clinical development to final approval. We summarize mechanistic insights that have driven a shift from broad immunosuppression to precise inhibition of type-2 inflammatory pathways, including blockade of key interleukin pathways. Randomized trials have demonstrated histologic and symptomatic gains, yet regulatory approvals and optimal positioning within treatment algorithms ar

Effects of TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles on the growth of phytoplankton assemblages in seawater.

Compounds in sunscreen such as ultraviolet (UV) filters protect human skin from damage caused by UV radiation exposure. However, sunscreen c … ssemblages, and small phytoplankton (mainly cyanobacteria) are vulnerable to NPs. Because herbivore food preferences depend strongly on algal cell size, NP contamination could also affect higher trophic levels. Notably, small phytoplankton are an important component in microbial loop, and this energy transfer pathway may be more vulnerable to NP contamination.

Participants' Assessment of the Impact of Behavioral Health Self-Direction on Recovery.

Self-direction involves managing a flexible budget, selecting and purchasing services and supports to meet individual needs and preferences. An emerging practice in the behavioral health field, self-direction is part of a systemic shift toward person-centered approaches to service provision. To understand the relationship between recovery and self-direction, the authors conducted a content analysis of 30 in-depth interviews with individuals from two self-direction programs in one state. A positive relationship between self-direction and recovery was established. Meeting basic needs for food, c

Sources and preferences for nutrition information among older adults: A scoping review.

A nutritionally adequate diet is essential for older adults to support healthy ageing and reduce the risk of malnutrition. With over a million older adults in the UK affected or at risk, understanding where they source nutrition information is critical for designing effective public health interventions. This scoping review mapped existing studies on the sources and preferences for nutrition information among older adults. A comprehensive search of PUBMED, Scopus, and CINAHL (March 2023; updated February 2025) yielded 8936 records, of which 15 studies reporting on 14 research projects met incl

Discrimination and evaluation of commercial large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea): Odor and taste-active compounds.

The absence of reliable identification technologies limits the authentication of geographical origin and growth conditions in large yellow croakers (LYCs). This study addressed this issue by analyzing odor and taste-active compounds to enable effective differentiation and quality evaluation. The findings revealed that inorganic sulfides, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, nitrogen-containing oxides, and methyl compounds served as potential odor markers for the rapid discrimination of LYC meat from various origins, with 3-methyl-1-butanol and hexanal identified as key distinguishing odor compounds.

Current research on plant-based milk alternatives and impact on health.

The consumption of Plant-based Milk Alternatives (PBMAs) is experiencing rapid growth due to evolving food preferences, the rise of veganism, environmental concerns, and issues associated with animal-based milk such as lactose intolerance, milk protein allergy, and galactosemia. PBMAs are beverages derived from the extraction of cereals, nuts, seeds, and legumes, with examples including soy milk, almond milk, oat milk, and various others. Despite the numerous benefits of PBMAs, their nutritional profile differs slightly from animal-based milk, particularly in terms of calcium and protein conte…

Review on Natural Preservatives for Extending Fish Shelf Life.

Fish is extremely perishable as a result of rapid microbial growth naturally present in fish or from contamination. Synthetic preservatives are widely used in fish storage to extend shelf life and maintain quality and safety. However, consumer preferences for natural preservatives and concerns about the safety of synthetic preservatives have prompted the food industry to search natural preservatives. Natural preservatives from microorganisms, plants, and animals have been shown potential in replacing the chemical antimicrobials. Bacteriocins and organic acids from bacteria showed good antimicr

Genetic and Neurobiological Analyses of the Noradrenergic-like System in Vulnerability to Sugar Overconsumption Using a Drosophila Model.

Regular overconsumption of sugar is associated with obesity and type-2 diabetes, but how genetic factors contribute to variable sugar preferences and intake levels remains mostly unclear. Here we provide evidence for the usefulness of a Drosophila larva model to investigate genetic influence on vulnerability to sugar overconsumption. Using genetic and RNA interference approaches, we show that the activity of the Oamb gene, which encodes a receptor for octopamine (OA, the invertebrate homologue of norepinephrine), plays a major role in controlled sugar consumption. Furthermore, Oamb appears to

Factors affecting graded and ungraded memory loss following hippocampal lesions.

This review evaluates three current theories--Standard Consolidation (Squire & Wixted, 2011), Overshadowing (Sutherland, Sparks, & Lehmann, 2010), and Multiple Trace-Transformation (Winocur, Moscovitch, & Bontempi, 2010)--in terms of their ability to account for the role of the hippocampus in recent and remote memory in animals. Evidence, based on consistent findings from tests of spatial memory and memory for acquired food preferences, favours the transformation account, but this conclusion is undermined by inconsistent results from studies that measured contextual fear memory, probably the m…

Validation of an immunohistochemical assay for bovine cysticercosis, with comparison to a standard histological method.

The larval stage (syn Cysticercus bovis) of the human tapeworm Taenia saginata causes cysticercosis in cattle, which has both aesthetic and food safety implications to consumers of beef. A monoclonal antibody-based immunohistochemical (IHC) assay developed to improve postmortem diagnosis of this parasite and a standard histological method were assessed to determine their fitness for intended use. Sections from 169 known-positive specimens of T. saginata from experimentally or naturally infected cattle, and from 30 known-negative specimens and lesions of various etiologies from non-infected cat

Pharmacoeconomics of nutritional support in cancer.

Physicians are increasingly asked to consider the cost of interventions, including procedures and drugs, when making medical decisions. This article provides some practical information about the cost and efficacy of a variety of nutrition support measures for patients with cancer or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-associated anorexia and undernutrition. Nutrition counseling, liquid homemade or commercially available food supplements, and appetite stimulants are relatively low-cost, effective means of nutrition support. Enteral nutrition requires invasive procedures, is more expensive, is as

General guidelines for a low-fat diet effective in the management and prevention of nonmelanoma skin cancer.

A dietary intervention trial has shown a significant reduction in occurrence of actinic keratosis and nonmelanoma skin cancer in skin cancer patients who adopt diets in which the percentage of calories from fat is markedly lowered. The purpose of this study was to examine the dietary parameters of a low-fat diet found to be effective in reducing occurrence of skin cancer. Skin cancer patients were taught fat reduction strategies to complement their individual food preferences and life-styles. Diet composition was calculated using standard dietary assessment and nutrient analysis techniques. Th…

From Farm to Fork: Streptococcus suis as a Model for the Development of Novel Phage-Based Biocontrol Agents.

Bacterial infections of livestock threaten the sustainability of agriculture and public health through production losses and contamination of food products. While prophylactic and therapeutic application of antibiotics has been successful in managing such infections, the evolution and spread of antibiotic-resistant strains along the food chain and in the environment necessitates the development of alternative or adjunct preventive and/or therapeutic strategies. Additionally, the growing consumer preference for "greener" antibiotic-free food products has reinforced the need for novel and safer

Sex differences and the roles of sex steroids in energy intake regulation and high-fat diet preference during free-choice feeding in young adult rats.

Excessive intake of high-fat diet (HFD) contributes to obesity. Sex differences and the specific roles of sex steroids in regulating HFD preference, particularly in metabolically flexible young animals, remain poorly understood. We first examined energy intake in young (starting age: 8 weeks old) gonadally intact male and female rats provided with ad libitum access to either a normal diet (ND) or an HFD alone for 30 days, without a dietary choice. Energy intake did not differ between ND-fed and HFD-fed rats in either sex. Therefore, we hypothesized that the lack of a dietary choice may mask th
