A New Frontier in Diabetic Foot Care: Clinical Outcomes with Diperoxochloric Acid in Treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers.

BACKGROUND: India is rapidly becoming the diabetes capital of the world, with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) emerging as one of the most common and debilitating complications. They significantly impair quality of life and, if untreated, may lead to lower limb amputation in up to 12% of cases. Various treatment methods are available, and this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and clinical outcomes of diperoxochloric acid (DPA) in the management of DFUs at a tertiary care center. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted from September 2022 to September 2024, involving 50 patients…

Development and validation of a new questionnaire for the assessment of patients with diabetic foot disease: The Diabetic Foot Questionnaire (DiaFootQ).

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology data and global burden of diabetic foot disease underscores the need for effective prevention strategies, which requires an early diagnosis. Patient-reported outcome measures are instruments based on a simple format, which favours their application. Currently, there is an absence of instruments with a broad enough scope to capture the diverse aspects involved in diabetic foot disease. OBJECTIVES: To develop a questionnaire for the assessment of patients with diabetic foot disease and carry out an analysis of its validity and reliability. METHODS: The study was de…

Effects of foot orthosis on ground reaction forces and perception during short sprints in flat-footed athletes.

Prefabricated foot orthosis (FO) is commonly worn for flat foot management. This study aimed to investigate the kinetic and perceptual effects of wearing prefabricated FO among flat-footed athletes during bouts of sprints. Twenty male sprint-based sports athletes who had flat foot bilaterally ran at three test speeds (5, 6, 7 m/s) under two conditions: prefabricated FO and sham FO. Ground reaction force (GRF) variables and subjective perceptions were recorded. Kinetic variability of GRF variables were computed to indicate step-to-step variance. Biomechanically, wearing prefabricated FOs increa…

Platelet to lymphocyte ratio correlates with diabetic foot risk and foot ulcer in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Diabetic foot ulcer is a major complication in patients with diabetes. Platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) has been reported to have a predictive effect to some diabetic complications in recent years. However, it has not been fully elucidated about the relationship between diabetic foot risk or diabetic foot ulcer and PLR in patients with type 2 diabetes. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate this relationship. In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the relationships between patient's diabetic foot risk with the criteria of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF) and prevalent …

Quantitative assessment of foot structure in rheumatoid arthritis by a foot digitizer: detection of deformities even in the absence of erosions.

OBJECTIVE: Foot involvement is a major feature in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), leading to structural deformities. Methods to allow a 3-dimensional (3-D) evaluation of foot structure in RA to be applicable in daily clinical practice have not been evaluated. This study assessed the use of a foot digitizer, a noninvasive 3-D scanner collecting objective quantitative data of the feet, to evaluate the presence of foot structure abnormalities in an RA outpatient cohort. METHODS: Foot digitizer data of RA patients were compared with healthy controls. Subanalyses were performed to find relationships wi…

Use of circular external fixation to maintain foot position during free tissue transfer to the foot and ankle.

Limb salvage techniques of traumatized extremities using free-tissue transfer and microsurgical techniques have become standard reconstructive methods. To our knowledge there is no published data on the incidence or likelihood of equinus following free tissue transfer about the ankle, although in our experience we have perceived an unacceptable incidence of equinus following free tissue transfers about the ankle and therefore initiated prophylactic ring fixation across the ankle. Fourteen patients were placed in circular external fixation spanning the ankle at the time of free tissue transfer

Measuring Foot Pressure in Pointe Shoes of Ballet Dancers Using a Modified Foot Pressure Sensor: A Brief Study.

Introduction: The mechanism of foot injury in ballet dancers can be understood by measuring the forces exerted on the foot in pointe shoes. In this study, we aimed to reveal the vertical forces applied to the toes in a pointe shoe during ballet movements in a time series using a modified foot pressure sensor. Methods: Three dancers wore their pointe shoes equipped with sensors to replace their usual toe pads. They performed 2 tasks: (1) holding a pointe posture on the right leg for 5 seconds and (2) jumping 5 times on the right leg while on pointe, on a force platform. Their movements were cap…

Foot self-care behaviour in primary care patients with diabetic foot ulcers: Structural equation modelling of psychological predictors.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are one of the most prevalent and costly diabetes complications, associated with diminished quality of life and poor prognosis. Management of DFUs relies heavily on patients' foot self-care behaviour. This study aims to explore psychological determinants of this important behaviour among primary care patients. A total of 186 patients with active DFUs self-reported their illness perception, diabetes distress, self-efficacy, and foot self-care behaviour. Structural equation modelling was performed to examine interrelationships among measured variables. The final model…

Treatment of Cleft Foot Deformity using Fish Mouth Incision and Suture-Button in Paediatric Foot: A case report.

Cleft foot is a congenital anomaly characterised by absence of the metatarsal bones and phalanges. It is commonly seen in children with ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome ranging from a median cleft up to the mid metatarsals to a deep cleft up to the tarsal bones. Surgical treatment in the form of cleft closure, excision of the rudimentary metatarsal bone and cross K-wire fixation of metatarsal bones have been tried for the management of such cases. We report a one-year-old child who presented to the paediatric orthopaedic clinic at a medical college in New Delhi, India, in 20…
