A clinico-pathological study of actinomycotic mycetomas caused by Actinomadura madurae and Actinomadura pelletierii.

Twenty seven cases of actionomycotic mycetoma caused either by Actinomadura madurae or Actinomadura pelletierii have been described. Infection by A. madurae has been more common than A. pelletierii. Left foot in A. madurae and right foot in A. pelletierii infections were involved more commonly in adult males, whereas right foot of the females was frequently affected in A. madurae infection. Large, soft, white grains in A. madurae and small, firm, red grains in A. pelletierii were consistently seen. Deep hematoxylin stained grains with scalloped margin and prominent eosinophilic club in A. madu

Dermatophytosis. A review of diagnosis and current therapy.

Inhibition of fungal growth and accelerated keratolysis are the necessary ingredients of dermatophyte therapy. Often, the primary fungus is destroyed by secondary bacterial invasion or the body's immune response. Clinicians must recognize this possibility and, in such instances, treat the bacterial infection or immune response rather than the suspected dermatophyte.

A case of paracoccidioidal granuloma in norther Nigeria.

A case of Paracoccidioidal granuloma in Northern Nigeria is presented. The fungus could be cultured and identified as Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. Histology revealed a fungal lesion due to a yeast like organism. The patient responded to long acting Sulphormethoxine (Fanasil). A variation from the classic histopathological description and association of pustular psoriasiform lesions on the soles with a possibility of 'Id' reaction to the fungus are discussed.

[Subcutaneous abscess due to dematiacious fungi. Report of two cases].

Two cases of subcutaneous abscesses due to dematiaceous fungi are presented. The first, localized in the elbow, exhibited the characteristic microscopic picture of the disorder. The second was localized in the sole, but histologically it showed well-organized mycotic granules much like those reported for eumycetoma. Both patients were asymptomatic and the clinical diagnosis was erroneous. The morphologic, clinical and etiologic aspects are discussed in the text. These cases indicate the need to consider mycotic infections in the differential diagnosis of all lesions which clinically resemble s

Chemotherapy-induced iatrogenic injury of skin: new drugs and new concepts.

Chemotherapy and its cutaneous side effects are an increasingly common source of iatrogenic injury to the skin, hair, and nails. Cutaneous changes are among the most common side effects from treatment with particular targeted chemotherapeutic agents, especially those that target the epidermal growth factor receptor and small molecule multikinase inhibitors. Less common, but growing in recognition, are the development of secondary cutaneous neoplasms and subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus as a result of chemotherapy. There is considerable overlap of the multiple entities described as a side

Modified intralesional aciclovir treatment in the management of recalcitrant palmoplantar and ungual warts: a case series of 14 patients.

In this retrospective study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of modified intralesional aciclovir for the treatment of recalcitrant palmoplantar and ungual warts in 14 patients (7 men and 7 women) of mean age 24.5 years (SD 8.19). Modified aciclovir (50 mg mL-1) was prepared by mixing 250 mg of lyophilized aciclovir powder with 4 mL of distilled water and 1 mL of 2% lignocaine. Then, this solution was injected into each wart at a dose of 0.1 mL or until blanching occurred. Every 2 weeks, the eschar was pared off and the treatment was repeated until a complete cure was observed, for a maxim

Non-dermatophyte mold onychomycosis in Sri Lanka.

Dermatophytic and non-dermatophytic onychomycosis (NDM) was indistinguishable clinically in our case series. Making a clinical diagnosis of onychomycosis without mycology is the routine practice in Sri Lanka. The prevalence of NDM (45.8%) was very high in our patient population, followed by yeasts (34.1%); dermatophyte infection made up only 20%. Therefore, the treatment of onychomycosis with griseofulvin seems futile. Close contact with soil, the habit of walking barefoot, frequent emersion of hands in water, and a hot, humid climate partly explain the variation in causative pathogens in this

Onychomycosis in patients with psoriasis--a multicentre study.

1-3% of human population is affected by psoriasis. Nail disorders are reported in 10-80% of patients with psoriasis. Nail deformations vary according to their degree of severity but are mainly represented by pitting, Beau's lines, hyperkeratosis, onycholysis, leuconychia or oil drops. Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nails, caused by dermatophytes, yeast and moulds. In this study, 228 patients with psoriasis aged between 18 and 72 were examined (48 - from Plovdiv, Bulgaria; 145 - from Pleven, Bulgaria and 35 - from Thessaloniki, Greece); 145 of them were male and 83 of them were fema
