This study evaluated forearm compartment pressures in 29 children with supracondylar humerus fractures. Pressures were measured before and after reduction in the dorsal, superficial volar, and deep volar compartments at the proximal 1/6th and proximal 1/3rd forearm. Results of the presented study indicate that MR imaging is a suitable method for demonstration of the abnormalities of the growth cartilage associated with the intramedullary fixation of the long bones of the forearm and leg. The technique of delayed autogenous cortical bone grafting was used in 17 patients (6 women, 11 men, with an average age of 22 years) to treat diaphyseal defects resulting mainly from closed or compound fractures complicated by infection and bone tissue loss. Sepsis, cellulitis, and necrotizing fasciitis rarely have been described as causes of compartment syndrome. We report a case in which forearm compartment syndrome presented as the initial symptom of systemic infection. Vibrio vulnificus, the etiologic pathogen of the compartment syndrome, was isolated from wound and blood cultures. The patient was treated with systemic antibiotic treatment and multiple forearm fasciotomies. Magnetic resonance (MR) examination of 42 normal wrists was performed for evaluation of anomalous musculature. A total of 23 muscle variations were found. Between 1989 and 1994 free gracilis muscle reinnervation was used to treat three patients severely affected with Volkmann's syndrome of the forearm.
