Intradiploic epidermoid cysts of the bony orbit.

Epidermoid cysts originating within the diploic space of the bony orbit are rare. The authors retrospectively studied four patients with an intradiploic epidermoid cyst of the orbital bones to investigate the clinical and the computed tomographic (CT) findings. The clinical presentation was dependent on the location of the slowly expanding epidermoid cyst. The sphenoid bone was involved in three patients and the frontal bone in one patient. Proptosis caused by intraorbital extension of the mass was the most common presenting sign. The findings on high-resolution CT scans appeared to be specifi…

[Organization of the nasal septum bone and its homologue. II. Os alare et systema palatinum axiale (in fish)].

The aim of these investigations was differentiation and systematization of elements of osseous medial palate and attempt to discover of spheno-orbital bone homologue in fish (os orbito-sphenoideum). 50 adults fish heads of carps, perch , tench , common pikes and trout were examined. The methodology was described elsewhere. It was stated that in examined animals the pair premaxilla was divided into three parts: corps, palate and frontal process. The para-sphenoid bone was also a double biomechanical system, composed of septum homologue and transverse lamina , the same as in other vertebrates. A

Ewing Sarcoma of the Craniofacial Bones: A Qualitative Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: To conduct a systematic review on the demographics, characteristics, management, treatment, complications, and outcomes of Ewing … encompassing 102 patients were identified. The most common craniofacial locations involved were the frontal bone (16.7%, n = 17), nasal cavity (16.7%, n = 17), and temporal bone (14.7%, n = 15). Stratified by location, the most common presenting symptoms were frontal bone (palpable mass, n = 8, 47.1%), nasal cavities (epistaxis, n = 9, 52.9%), and temporal bon …

Treatment of calvarial defects by resorbable and non-resorbable sonic activated polymer pins and mouldable titanium mesh in two dogs: a case report.

BACKGROUND: To date, calvarial defects in dogs have traditionally been addressed with different types of implants including bone allograft, … he repair of a traumatic calvarial fracture in an adult male Greyhound and a cranioplasty following frontal bone tumor resection in an adult female Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with the use of a commercially available titanium mesh secured with an innovative thermoplastic polymer screw system (Bonewelding®). The treatment combination aimed to restore cranial …

Roentgenographic examination of the wrist: a systematic study of the normal, lax and injured wrist. Part 1: The standard and positional views.

The precise appearances and relationships of the carpal bones have been studied in 53 normal wrists, 15 lax wrists, and 80 injured wrists, using frontal and lateral projections with the wrist in neutral and in various other positions. The findings are discussed and analysed.

The Snails: A Simple Technique for Reduction of Frontal Bossing in Children With Scaphocephaly.

OBJECTIVE: Scaphocephaly represents the most frequent single-suture craniosynostosis, with a male prevalence. In many cases, prominent frontal bossing (sphenocephaly) is the major aesthetic concern, typically in school-aged children. This aspect is also usually found in patients with late presentation (after 1 year of age). Several techniques have been described for the correction of frontal bossing in these patients, most involving wide frontal bone exposure and reconstruction. The authors describe a different, less invasive technique, useful in severe sphenocephalic patients, independently f…

Endoscopic Approach for Resection of Frontal Forehead Osteoma: Technical Case Report Instruction.

Forehead osteomas are benign bone tumors. They are frequently associated with exophytic growth in the outer table of the skull, causing cosmetic disfigurement of the face.1-9 The objective of this study was to present the efficacy and feasibility of the endoscopic treatment of forehead osteomas by presenting a case report with details of the surgical technique. A 40-year-old female patient presented with aesthetic complains of a progressing bulge in the forehead. A computed tomography scan with 3-dimensional reconstruction showed bone lesions on the right side of the forehead. The patient unde

[Crista galli pnevmatization: prevalence and clinical significance].

OBJECTIVE: Determine the frequency of crista galli (crest of the rooster) pneumatization and the presence of communication of the pneumatized crista galli with the paranasal sinuses. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Computed tomography data of the paranasal sinuses of 251 patients. The patients' age ranged from 23 to 70 years. Variations in crista galli were classified according to the degree of pneumatization. RESULTS: The pneumatic type of crista galli structure was observed in 14.7% of cases. The most commonly crista galli pneumatized had a connection with the frontal sinus. In some cases, in the pr

Endoscopic-Assisted Fronto-Orbital Distraction Osteogenesis: Initial Patient Report.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this manuscript is to introduce a novel endoscopic-assisted approach for creation of osteotomies and distractor hardware placement for unicoronal craniosynostosis. METHODS: Only three small incisions are performed, one at the anterior fontanelle, pterional region, and upper lateral blepharoplasty location. Unicoronal strip craniectomy and osteotomies in temporal bone, nasofrontal junction, lateral orbital rim, sphenoid wing, orbital roof, and contralateral frontal bone are performed through these incisions with the assistance of a 30° 5-mm endoscope. One linear cran…

Anatomic Variations of Ethmoid Roof and Risk of Skull Base Injury in Endoscopic Sinus Surgery: Statistical Correlations.

BACKGROUND: Recent developments in endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) have increased the need to investigate the complex anatomic variations in the ethmoid roof and skull base, to inform the surgeon about the risk of damaging these crucial areas during ESS. OBJECTIVE: To offer a detailed description of sinus anatomy focusing on the key surgical landmarks in ESS and frontal recess surgery to standardize a systematic approach during the preoperative sinuses imaging evaluation.Methodology: A total of 220 computed tomography (CT) scans were reviewed to obtain six sets of measurements: the depth of th

Methylmethacrylate onlay implants in the treatment of forehead deformities secondary to craniosynostosis.

Craniosynostosis (Cruzon's, Pfeiffer's and Apert's Syndrome, etc.) can cause forehead deformities that frequently need reconstruction. In general, osteotomies and/or bone grafting are the preferred methods for obtaining proper orbital protection from above and a good aesthetic appearance. In certain cases however, osteotomies and/or bone grafting are not possible or a patient may refuse to have such an extensive procedure. Preformed methylmethacrylate prostheses have in such cases been implanted in patients with significant skull deformities with only minimal morbidity. The ease of this techni

Orbital hematoma secondary to frontal sinusitis.

A 30-year-old woman had an orbital hematoma with frontal sinusitis. This complication of infection in the paranasal sinuses has not been previously described, but is explainable in anatomic terms. On computed tomographic scanning, the degree of enhancement with contrast infusion was striking and may aid in future diagnosis of this condition.

A comparative approach to bony changes in maxillary and frontal sinuses as indicators of upper respiratory health.

OBJECTIVE: The central aspect of this study is to provide a detailed comparison of bony changes in the maxillary and frontal sinuses in human skeletal remains in an effort to assist researchers record lesions and assist with potential diagnoses. MATERIALS: 198 adult human remains from a medieval Avar population from Vienna, Austria. METHODS: Analysis of bony changes using an endoscopic multifunctional camera with an ultra-small lens and adjustable LED lights. RESULTS: Most common findings in both the maxillary and frontal sinuses are "pitting" and "white pitted bone". However, significant d
