Audiovisual integration and cognitive control supporting reading fluency.

The ability to integrate information from the auditory and visual sensory systems, also referred to as audiovisual integration (and as synchronization), is important for reading fluency. Several studies have pointed to atypical synchronization of the auditory and visual systems in individuals with reading difficulties, which in turn may help to explain their dysfluent reading and have been supported by neuroimaging evidence. This inefficient synchronization between the modalities has also been thought to be attributed to top-down (executive functions) and bottom-up (print characteristics) proc

Dementia following herpes zoster encephalitis.

We studied the rare case of an older adult with dementia following herpes zoster encephalitis (HZE). This 71-year-old woman presented to us approximately 1 year following resolution of a rapid-onset episode of HZE, and subsequently underwent neuropsychological and neuroimaging examinations. Cognitive assessment revealed impairments in general cognitive functioning, verbal and nonverbal memory, executive functions, speed of information processing, attention/working memory, and motor skills. The patient's neuroimaging data, when compared to a demographically similar healthy control sample (n = 9

Comparative study of the neuropsychological and neuroimaging evaluations in children with dyslexia.

We analyzed retrospectively the neuroimaging exams of children with a confirmed diagnosis of dyslexia and correlated our findings with the evaluation of higher cortical functions. We studied 34 medical files of patients of the Ambulatory of Neuro-difficulties in Learning, FCM/UNICAMP. All of them had been sent to the ambulatory with primary or secondary complaints of difficulties at school and were submitted to neuropsychological evaluation and imaging exam (SPECT). From the children evaluated 58.8% had exams presenting dysfunction with 47% presenting hypoperfusion in the temporal lobe. As for

Mild kidney dysfunction affects the predictive accuracy of blood-based biomarkers for neuropsychological and neuroimaging outcomes over a 9 year follow-up period.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of chronic kidney disease (CKD) on Alzheimer's disease (AD) plasma biomarkers is poorly understood. We tested whether kidney function decline affects the predictive accuracy of plasma biomarkers on neuropsychological or neuroimaging outcomes. METHODS: Three hundred thirty-three non-demented older adults were included. Linear regressions related plasma glial fibrillary acidic protein, neurofilament light chain (NfL), amyloid beta 42, and phosphorylated tau231, with a blood-based biomarker x estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) interaction term, to cross-sectiona

Functional localization and categorization of intentional decisions in humans: A meta-analysis of brain imaging studies.

Brain-imaging research on intentional decision-making often employs a "free-choice" paradigm, in which participants choose among options with identical values or outcomes. Although the medial prefrontal cortex has commonly been associated with choices, there is no consensus on the wider network that underlies diverse intentional decisions and behaviours. Our systematic literature search identified 35 fMRI/PET experiments using various free-choice paradigms, with appropriate control conditions using external instructions. An Activation Likelihood Estimate (ALE) meta-analysis showed that, compar

A coordinate-based meta-analysis of the n-back working memory paradigm using activation likelihood estimation.

The n-back task is a classical paradigm for functional neuroimaging studies of working memory (WM). The frontal and parietal cortical regions are known to be activated during the task. We used activation likelihood estimation (ALE) to conduct a quantitative meta-analysis of 96 primary studies of n-back task variants based on four conditions: memory loads (1-back, 2-back), object (identity, location), age (younger, older) and gender (male, female). Six cortical regions were consistently activated across all the studies: bilateral middle frontal gyrus (BA 10); bilateral inferior parietal lobule …

Amygdala activation in maltreated children during pre-attentive emotional processing.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity is associated with significantly increased risk of psychiatric disorder. To date, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of children have mainly focused on institutionalisation and investigated conscious processing of affect. AIMS: To investigate neural response to pre-attentively presented affect cues in a community sample of children with documented experiences of maltreatment in the home. METHOD: A masked dot-probe paradigm involving pre-attentive presentation of angry, happy and neutral facial expressions was employed. Eighteen maltreated chi

BFLCRM: A BAYESIAN FUNCTIONAL LINEAR COX REGRESSION MODEL FOR PREDICTING TIME TO CONVERSION TO ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE.

The aim of this paper is to develop a Bayesian functional linear Cox regression model (BFLCRM) with both functional and scalar covariates. This new development is motivated by establishing the likelihood of conversion to Alzheimer's disease (AD) in 346 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) enrolled in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative 1 (ADNI-1) and the early markers of conversion. These 346 MCI patients were followed over 48 months, with 161 MCI participants progressing to AD at 48 months. The functional linear Cox regression model was used to establish that functional c

Functional lateralization of arithmetic processing in the intraparietal sulcus is associated with handedness.

Functional lateralization is established for various cognitive functions, but was hardly ever investigated for arithmetic processing. Most neurocognitive models assume a central role of the bilateral intraparietal sulcus (IPS) in arithmetic processing and there is some evidence for more pronounced left-hemispheric activation for symbolic arithmetic. However, evidence was mainly obtained by studies in right-handers. Therefore, we conducted a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) study, in which IPS activation of left-handed adults was compared to right-handed adults in a symbolic approx

Cross-frequency interactions between frontal theta and posterior alpha control mechanisms foster working memory.

Neural oscillatory activity in the theta (4-8 Hz) and alpha (8-14 Hz) bands has been associated with the implementation of executive function, with theta in midline frontal cortex and alpha in posterior parietal cortex related to working memory (WM) load. To identify how these spatially and spectrally distinct neural phenomena interact within a large-scale fronto-parietal network organized in service of WM, EEG was recorded while subjects performed an N-back WM task. Frontal theta power increase, paralleled by posterior alpha decrease, tracked participants' successful WM performance. These pow

Glioblastoma multiforme presenting as postpartum depression: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Alterations of mental status are characteristic of psychiatric disorders but may also result from a multitude of organic causes. Generally, physical examination and blood analysis are a part of basic psychiatric differential diagnostics, whereas more sophisticated procedures (for example, brain imaging) are applied only in cases with pathologic diagnostic findings. Our report challenges this approach by describing a case of glioblastoma multiforme presenting as postpartum depression without abnormalities in basic differential diagnostics. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old white wom

Resting state fMRI correlates of Theory of Mind impairment in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Theory of Mind (ToM), the ability to recognize thoughts and emotions of another, may be one of the cognitive domains affected in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease now recognized as a multi-system disorder. The present study aimed to identify early dysfunctions of brain resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) networks in a group of ALS patients longitudinally explored for impairment of "cognitive" and "affective" ToM subcomponents. RS-fMRI connectivity was investigated in a group of 21 patients with ALS (i.e., 9 with bulbar-onset or ALS-B and

Altered Brain Activity in Unipolar Depression Revisited: Meta-analyses of Neuroimaging Studies.

IMPORTANCE: During the past 20 years, numerous neuroimaging experiments have investigated aberrant brain activation during cognitive and emotional processing in patients with unipolar depression (UD). The results of those investigations, however, vary considerably; moreover, previous meta-analyses also yielded inconsistent findings. OBJECTIVE: To readdress aberrant brain activation in UD as evidenced by neuroimaging experiments on cognitive and/or emotional processing. DATA SOURCES: Neuroimaging experiments published from January 1, 1997, to October 1, 2015, were identified by a literature s

Replication challenges in linking personality to resting-state functional connectomics.

An increasing number of studies are currently focusing on "personality neuroscience," a term denoting the research aimed at neuroimaging correlates of inter-individual temperament and character variability. Among other methods, a graph theoretical analysis of the functional connectivity in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data was applied in a study by, reporting novel functional connectivity correlates of personality traits. The current paper presents a conceptual replication of the results of this study and discusses the related challenges, including an extension of the or

Whole-brain functional activity and connectivity for the classification of subjective tinnitus: a machine learning study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Clinical evaluation of subjective tinnitus mainly depends on patients' self-reported auditory complaints, and standardized neuroimaging biomarkers for characterizing its central brain functional abnormalities remain lacking. The aim of this study is to utilize the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) machine learning technique based on the region of interest (ROI), and to construct an exploratory classification framework for subjective tinnitus by analyzing functional activities and connectivity. METHODS: The rs-fMRI data of 63 patients with su

Olfactory Groove Meningioma Mimicking Late-Life Depression: A Case Report.

Late-life depression presenting with atypical features, progressive functional decline, behavioral changes, or poor response to treatment should prompt consideration of secondary causes. Olfactory groove meningiomas are slow-growing anterior skull base tumors that may remain clinically silent for prolonged periods and may present primarily with neuropsychiatric symptoms due to frontal lobe involvement. We report the case of a 64-year-old woman with a progressive depressive presentation characterized by marked functional decline, apathy, abulia, behavioral disinhibition, impaired insight, and e

Comparing and Scaling fMRI Features for Brain-Behavior Prediction.

Predicting behavioral variables from neuroimaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has the potential to allow the development of neuroimaging biomarkers of mental and neurological disorders. A crucial processing step to this aim is the extraction of suitable features. These can differ in how well they predict the target of interest, and how this prediction scales with sample size and scan time. Here, we compare nine feature subtypes extracted from resting-state functional MRI recordings for behavior prediction, ranging from regional measures of functional activity to functio

Longitudinal Imaging of Reading and Naming Recovery after Stroke.

BACKGROUND: Functional neuroimaging techniques can provide a unique window into the neural basis of language recovery after a stroke. The functional neuroimaging literature on post-stroke language recovery is complex; multiple factors such as the time post-stroke, degree of initial impairment, nature of the task, and lesion location and size, influence recovery patterns. Some of these factors may not be applicable across different stroke participants, and therefore, influence recovery trajectories in vastly different manners across patients. AIMS: The aim of this paper is to examine longitudi…
