Many researchers have shown that plant-derived polyphenolic compounds are helpful nutraceuticals in restraining various disorders such as neoplastic diseases. In this study two linear furanocoumarins, aviprin and aviprin-3″-O-D-glucopyranoside (A3G), were isolated from methanol extract of Prangos uloptera roots. The evaluation of free radical scavenging capacity of the compounds showed that aviprin is a more effective antioxidant than A3G with RC50 of 0.54 mg mL⁻¹. Porous graphitic carbon (PGC) is known as well suited adsorbent for liquid chromatography of carbohydrates. In this work we report on systematic investigations of solvent effects on the retention mechanism of fluorescence labeled malto-oligosaccharides on PGC. The adsorption mechanism was found to depend on the type of organic modifier used in the mobile phase. Positive adsorption enthalpies and entropies, which have already been reported in the literature, were solely produced using acetonitrile. Both alternative solvents (tetrahydrofuran, 2-propanol) yielded in contrast negative enthalpies.

A versatile route to the synthesis of 2,5-diaryl-3,4-dimethyltetrahydrofuran lignans, (-)-odoratisol C (1), (-)-futokadsurin A (2), (-)-veraguensin (3), (+)-fragransin A2 (4), (+)-galbelgin (5), and (+)-talaumidin (6), is described. 3-Alkylidenedihydrofuran-2,4-diones 1 can be photooxygenated with O(2)/TBHP to hydroperoxides 3 which slowly decompose to diols 5. Stable endoperoxides 4 are best prepared by photooxygenation of 1 with 2 equiv of O(2) in the presence of CuSO(4) and p-TosOH following a nonradical mechanism. They are rapidly reduced by anhydrous FeBr(2) to give butenolide 9 indicating a potential antimalarial activity.

We report herein the first determination of the absolute configuration of the annonaceous butenolides by a NMR method. This technique uses a chiral solvating agent (CSA), the so-called Pirkle's reagent, at low temperature and low concentration, allowing one to apply this method to other natural products as well. An extremely potent mutagen, 3-chloro-4(dichloromethyl)-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone (MX) is commonly present in chlorinated drinking water. Due to its high mutagenic activity and according to World Health Organization guidelines its concentration should be controlled in drinking waters. Determination of MX is difficult due to ppt levels at which the compound usually exists in drinking waters. Derivatization of MX with 2-propanol is presented as a method which significantly lowers the GC-MS detection level compared to other alcohol derivatization agents.

The influence of the type of organic modifiers on retention behavior in micellar liquid chromatography is studied. A group of amino acids and small peptides was used as the test mixture. The acute and subchronic toxicity of monenzine (preparation Elancoban -- 100 of Elanco Co., USA) to male lambs for fattening aged 3-4 months and weighing 16-28.5 kg was studied. It was established that the single per oral dose of 5 mg/kg weight of the natrium monoenzine salt causes a temporary lack of appetitie but no changes in the behavior and the general state of the animals. The present report concerns a patient with ulceration around an artificial anus. The condition had been treated for some time as pyoderma gangrenosum but finally proved to be cutaneous amoebiasis; the presence of Entamoeba histolytica was demonstrated. A cure was achieved with metronidazol (Flagy) and diloxanide furoate (Furamide) given orally.
