Characteristics of the Health-Associated Oral Microbiome in Young Nonhuman Primates.

Nonhuman primates have been shown to develop periodontitis with clinical and demographic features similar to humans. This preclinical disease model is well-positioned to advance the elucidation of novel biologic-based preventive and therapeutic approaches to controlling periodontitis, a chronic infection and immunoinflammatory disease. In this analysis, the oral microbiomes of younger (10-19 human years; n = 30) nonhuman primates are compared for matriline (an indicator of heritability), sex, and age variations. A holistic assessment of the microbiome similarities/differences suggested two pri

Winged odyssey: Profiling bacterial vistas in migratory avifauna via 16S rRNA sequencing.

Avian migration is an intrinsic biological phenomenon that involves trans-boundary movements to evade adverse ecological circumstances. During migration, avian gut bacterial taxa may serve as a potential source of bacterial dissemination via fecal contamination at stop-over sites. Therefore, bacterial taxa composition as well as diversities were investigated employing 16S rRNA sequencing in fecal samples collected from flocks of seven migratory avian species visiting southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The analysis revealed that Grus virgo exhibits the highest alpha diversity,

Nisin lantibiotic prevents NAFLD liver steatosis and mitochondrial oxidative stress following periodontal disease by abrogating oral, gut and liver dysbiosis.

Oral microbiome dysbiosis mediates chronic periodontal disease, gut microbial dysbiosis, and mucosal barrier disfunction that leads to steatohepatitis via the enterohepatic circulation. Improving this dysbiosis towards health may improve liver disease. Treatment with antibiotics and probiotics have been used to modulate the microbial, immunological, and clinical landscape of periodontal disease with some success. The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the potential for nisin, an antimicrobial peptide produced by Lactococcus lactis, to counteract the periodontitis-associated gut d

Bacterial diversity and community characteristics of the sinus and dental regions in adults with odontogenic sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: The microbiome plays a crucial role in odontogenic sinusitis (OS); however, the bacterial characteristics of the sinuses and connected dental regions in OS are poorly understood. In this study, nasal secretion samples were collected from 41 OS patients and 20 simple nasal septum deviation patients, and oral mucosa samples from dental regions were collected from 28 OS patients and 22 impacted tooth extraction patients. DNA was extracted, and 16S rRNA sequencing was performed to explore the characteristics and structure of the microbiome in the sinuses and dental regions of OS patien

[Suppurative Thrombophlebitis of the Posterior Neck Caused by Streptococcus constellatus: A Case Report and Literature Review].

We report a rare case of suppurative thrombophlebitis of the posterior neck caused by Streptococcus constellatus. A 69-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital with neck pain and fever, which had persisted for 16 days prior to hospitalization. On day 1 (day of admission), blood cultures (later identifying S. constellatus) were performed, and ceftriaxone (CTRX) IV (2 g SID) was started. On day 3, suppurative thrombophlebitis of the posterior neck was diagnosed by CT scan. The antimicrobials were changed from CTRX to ampicillin/sulbactam IV (12 g QID) to guard against the possibility

Periodontal Pathogens Modulate Lipid Flux via Fatty Acid Binding Protein 4.

A strong correlation between chronic periodontitis and systemic diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders) has been suggested for several decades. However, the evidence supporting this correlation is restricted primarily to epidemiologic studies, with only a few experimental outcomes confirming such a correlation and providing information about the underlying molecular mechanisms. To reveal a correlation between periodontitis and systemic diseases as well as a relevant molecular pathway, we investigated the effects of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum, whic

The role of infectious agents in the development of porcine gastric ulceration.

Ulceration of the non-glandular part of the stomach is a common disease entity of pigs worldwide, with prevalences of up to 93%. It may result in decreased daily weight gain, decreased feed intake and sudden death, thus leading to significant economic losses, as well as animal welfare issues. The aetiology is multifactorial. Diet particle size, management and infectious agents have been hypothesised to be involved. The exact mechanism behind porcine gastric ulceration is, however, not completely clear. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the role of infectious agents in the de

Identification of bacteria enduring endodontic treatment procedures by a combined reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and reverse-capture checkerboard approach.

INTRODUCTION: This study identified the bacterial taxa enduring endodontic treatment procedures by using a combined 16S ribosomal RNA-based reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and reverse-capture checkerboard hybridization approach. METHODS: Samples were taken from infected canals of 15 teeth with apical periodontitis before treatment (S1), after chemomechanical preparation with NaOCl as the irrigant (S2), and after interappointment medication with a calcium hydroxide paste (S3). Bacterial presence was first screened by a DNA-based single PCR assay. RNA extracts were subj

[Surgical treatment of chronical pulmonary abscesses--contemporary treatment].

Between Jan 1991 and Dec 2000 a total of 67 patients were operated on for chronic primary pulmonary abscesses. They were 57 men and 10 women with mean age of 46.2 (range, 12 to 72) years. The indications for surgery was mainly "delayed closure" following medical therapy and percutaneous tube drainage (3), as well as a massive hemoptysis in 4 cases. CT scanning and brochoscopy were performed in all patients. The majority of them had multiple isolates (51/67) of both aerobic and anaerobic (predominantly Bacteroides sp., Fusobacterium sp., and Peptococci) organisms. The following operations were

Preventive and Therapeutic Potential of Streptococcus cristatus CA119 in Experimental Periodontitis in Rats.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition of the oral cavity caused by a mixed infection of various bacteria, which not only severely affects the alveolar bone and connective tissues but also displays potential correlations with distal intestinal inflammation. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the therapeutic effects of Streptococcus cristatus CA119 on experimental periodontitis in rats and its impact on intestinal morphology. The results demonstrate that CA119 is capable of colonizing the oral cavity and exerting antagonistic effects on Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum

A Review on Microbial Species for Forensic Body Fluid Identification in Healthy and Diseased Humans.

Microbial communities present in body fluids can assist in distinguishing between types of body fluids. Metagenomic studies have reported bacterial genera which are core to specific body fluids and are greatly influenced by geographical location and ethnicity. Bacteria in body fluids could also be due to bacterial infection; hence, it would be worthwhile taking into consideration bacterial species associated with diseases. The present review reports bacterial species characteristic of diseased and healthy body fluids across geographical locations, and bacteria described in forensic studies, wi

Microbiome diversity in the bronchial tracts of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Culture of bacteria from bronchial secretions in respiratory patients has low sensitivity and does not allow for complete assessment of microbial diversity across different bronchial compartments. In addition, a significant number of clinical studies are based on sputum samples, and it is not known to what extent they describe the real diversity of the mucosa. In order to identify previously unrecognized lower airway bacteria and to investigate the complexity and distribution of microbiota in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), we performed PCR amplification and pyroseq

Efficacy of taurolidine against periodontopathic species--an in vitro study.

The antimicrobial effect of taurolidine was tested against periodontopathic species in comparison to chlorhexidine digluconate in the presence or absence of serum. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC), microbiocidal concentrations (MBC), as well as killing were determined against 32 different microbial strains including 3 Porphyromonas gingivalis, 3 Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, and 15 potentially superinfecting species with and without 25% v/v human serum. The MIC(50) of taurolidine against the tested microbial strains was 0.025% and the MIC(90) 0.05%. The respective values for th

Arbitrarily primed-polymerase chain reaction for identification and epidemiologic subtyping of oral isolates of Fusobacterium nucleatum.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium nucleatum is the most frequently isolated bacterium in periodontal disease and plays an important role in serious infections in other parts of the body. Arbitrarily primed-polymerase chain reaction (AP-PCR) was used to construct primers for specific identification and subtyping of F. nucleatum. Subtypes may differ in virulence and, hence, are important as periodontal pathogens. Subtypes also may differ in antibiotic susceptibility; therefore, knowing the subtypes may influence choice of treatment. METHODS: We analyzed 70 DNA samples of F. nucleatum isolated from pati

Microbial and metabolic profiles associated with HPV infection and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia: a multi-omics study.

UNLABELLED: Cervical cancer is the most common malignancy of the female reproductive system, with the incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV) being a crucial factor in its pathogenesis. Emerging evidence indicates that cervicovaginal microbiota may influence HPV persistence and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). However, the interplay between cervicovaginal and cervical tissue microbiomes and their association with HPV infection and CIN remains poorly understood. In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed the microbiota profiles of cervicovaginal and cervical tissue via five-region 16S
