Salmonella Infantis is one of the five serovars most frequently causing human salmonellosis in Europe, mainly associated with poultry. A clone harbouring a conjugative plasmid of emerging S. Infantis (pESI)-like megaplasmid, carrying multidrug resistant (MDR) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) genes, has spread in the Italian broiler chicken industry also causing human illness. This work is aimed at elucidating the molecular epidemiology of S. Infantis and pESI-like in Europe using whole-genome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis, and to investigate the genetic relatedness of S. I

Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is a major serovar associated with human salmonellosis. A total of 425 clinical S. Enteritidis isolates of human origin were collected between June 2009 and September 2010 from North Carolina. The isolates were further characterized for antimicrobial susceptibility, antimicrobial resistance coding determinants, virulence genes, and fingerprint profiles to determine whether they were similar or different to the S. Enteritidis strain responsible for the human outbreak due to consumption of contaminated eggs. Ten different antimicrobial res

Multidrug resistance (MDR) confers agrochemical compatibility to fungal cells-based mycoinsecticdes but mechanisms involved in MDR remain poorly understood for entomopathogenic fungi, which have been widely applied as biocontrol agents against arthropod pests. Here we characterized the functions of five ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, which were classified to the subfamilies ABC-B (Mdr1), ABC-C (Mrp1) and ABC-G (Pdr1, Pdr2 and Pdr5) and selected from 54 full-size ABC proteins of Beauveria bassiana based on their main domain architecture, membrane topology and transcriptional responses

PROBLEM ADDRESSED: Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA), particularly of the clonal complex (CC) 398, emerged as zoonotic pathogens predominantly among humans with direct or indirect livestock contact, but also in healthcare settings. The factors contributing to the success of LA-MRSA are only poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: During the past years, the use of heavy metal compounds as feed-supplements was found to influence the co-selection of LA-MRSA in pig herds. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of zinc resistance among MRSA CC398 isolated from

The contribution of drug efflux pumps in clinical isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae that express extensively drug-resistant or multidrug-resistant phenotypes has heretofore not been examined. Accordingly, we assessed the effect on antimicrobial resistance of loss of the three gonococcal efflux pumps associated with a known capacity to export antimicrobials (MtrC-MtrD-MtrE, MacA-MacB, and NorM) in such clinical isolates. We report that the MIC of several antimicrobials, including seven previously and currently recommended for treatment was significantly impacted.

Multidrug resistance poses a significant challenge to the efficacy of microbial infection treatment. Pharmaceuticals are significant reservoirs of antibiotic residues, which play a major role in inducing antibiotic-resistant microorganisms in wastewater. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among microorganisms present in pharmaceutical wastewater increases the threat of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, particularly in developing countries such as Bangladesh. This study investigates AMR in Escherichia coli isolated from effluent treatment plants (ETPs) and surrounding environmental water near six

OBJECTIVES: The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella strains, especially resistant ones toward critically important antimicrobial classes such as fluoroquinolones and third- and fourth-generation cephalosporins, is a growing public health concern. The current study, therefore, aimed to determine the prevalence, and existence of virulence genes (invA, stn, and spvC genes), antimicrobial resistance profiles, and the presence of β-lactamase resistance genes (blaOXA, blaCTX-M1, blaSHV, and blaTEM) in Salmonella strains isolated from native chicken carcasses in Egypt marketed in Mansou

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been established to be a significant driver for the persistence and spread of bacterial infections. It is, therefore, essential to conduct epidemiological surveillance of AMR in healthy individuals to understand the actual dynamics of AMR in Nigeria. Multi-drug resistant Klebsiella quasivariicola (n=1), Enterobacter hormaechei (n=1), and Escherichia coli (n=3) from stool samples of healthy children were subjected to whole genome sequencing using Illumina Nextseq1000/2000 and Oxford nanopore. Bioinformatics analysis reveals antimicrobial resistance, virulence

A new large-scale study reports the whole-genome sequences of nearly 2,000 Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi) strains collected from 63 countries. A recent and dominant multidrug-resistant (MDR) lineage originating from South Asia, which is supplanting a bulk of ancestral drug-sensitive strains, is identified; the success of this lineage is likely driven by plasmid acquisitions and the chromosomal integration of resistance-conferring genes.

Dementia is a multifactorial disease in which environmental, lifestyle, and genetic factors intervene. Population studies have been used in looking for the susceptibility genes for this disease. Since the activity of dopamine b hydroxylase (DβH) is reduced in the hippocampus and neocortex in the brain, changes in the physiological status of dopamine have been reported in Alzheimer's disease (AD) induced by this enzyme. Therefore, DBH polymorphisms have been associated with susceptibility to some neurological diseases such as AD, but few studies have investigated the relationship between these

Doxorubicin (Dox) incorporated in nanosized polymeric micelles, SP1049C, has shown promise as monotherapy in patients with advanced esophageal carcinoma. The formulation contains amphiphilic block copolymers, Pluronics, that exhibit the unique ability to chemosensitize multidrug resistant (MDR) tumors by inhibiting P-glycoprotein (Pgp) drug efflux system and enhancing pro-apoptotic signaling in cancer cells. This work evaluates whether a representative block copolymer, Pluronic P85 (P85) can also prevent development of Dox-induced MDR in leukemia cells. For in vitro studies murine lymphocytic
