Static-electricity-induced luminescence trajectory tracking: A paradigm for noncontact human-machine interaction in dark environments.

Multiscenario adaptability is a core target of emerging human-machine interaction (HMI) technologies, but conventional visual HMI relies on ambient light illumination, failing to adapt to low-/no-light scenarios. Here, we propose a static-electricity-induced luminescence (SEL) trajectory tracking model, and develop a portable SEL platform integrated with SrAl2O4:Eu2+/polydimethylsiloxane film, featuring 5 to 50 kV operating voltage, 13 mm noncontact distance, ≥150-day stability, 400 K thermal tolerance, and <1 nA body current for high biosafety. Comprehensive mechanism investigations offer a d

Highly Sensitive Triple-Network Hydrogels Enable Advanced Sensing for Next-Generation E-Skins.

In this work, a highly sensitive, flexible, and stable hydrogel is developed for electronic skin with a triple-network structure composed of polyacrylamide monomer (PAAM), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), PEDOT:PSS, and Fe3⁺ coordination bonds. The hydrogel exhibits exceptional mechanical and electrical properties, including high tensile strength (91.2 kPa), extensibility (1210%), conductivity (178.8 S m-1 at 200% strain), and long-term durability, achieved through the synergistic effects of hydrogen bonding, dynamic Fe3⁺ coordination, and ionic conductivity. The sensor demonstrates precise and prop

Affectivity as stance: multimodal stance-taking in audiovisual documentations of Polish and German parliamentary debates.

This paper presents a media-aesthetic framework to study affectivity as a stance. This framework opens up a new perspective on multimodal affective stance-taking in the context of specific media ecologies. It exemplifies this new approach with case studies of the official audiovisual documentation of political debates in the German Bundestag and the Polish Sejm. This new approach addresses the intertwining of audiovisual multimodality with verbo-gestural expressivity (or the multimodality of speaking). Adopting a phenomenological position, we are interested in how the orchestration of the deba

[Seizure Semiology and Functional Anatomy in the Cerebral Cortex].

Understanding the semiology and underlying anatomy of each seizure is essential for epilepsy surgeons. According to the International League Against Epilepsy(ILAE)classification in 2017, seizure types are classified as focal, generalized, or unknown onset, all of which are further classified as motor or non-motor onset. Impairment of awareness is involved in consciousness systems(consisting of subcortical structures such as the thalamus and upper brain stem)and cortical structures(including the frontoparietal association cortices). Seizures with motor features are divided into elementary sympt

An Instrumented Glove-Controlled Portable Hand-Exoskeleton for Bilateral Hand Rehabilitation.

Effective bilateral hand training is desired in rehabilitation programs to restore hand function for people with unilateral hemiplegia, so that they can perform daily activities independently. However, owing to limited human resources, the hand function training available in current clinical settings is significantly less than the adequate amount needed to drive optimal neural reorganization. In this study, we designed a lightweight and portable hand exoskeleton with a hand-sensing glove for bilateral hand training and home-based rehabilitation. The hand-sensing glove measures the hand movemen

Selection of words for implementation of the Picture Exchange Communication System - PECS in non-verbal autistic children.

PURPOSE: It is known that some autistic individuals are considered non-verbal, since they are unable to use verbal language and barely use gestures to compensate for the absence of speech. Therefore, these individuals' ability to communicate may benefit from the use of the Picture Exchange Communication System - PECS. The objective of this study was to verify the most frequently used words in the implementation of PECS in autistic children, and on a complementary basis, to analyze the correlation between the frequency of these words and the rate of maladaptive behaviors. METHODS: This is a cr…

Creation and design of a test for the Evaluation of Upper Limb Apraxia (EULA) based on a cognitive model: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Apraxia is regarded as neurological disorder characterized by a loss of ability to execute and carry out skilled movements and gestures despite intact motor and sensory systems, coordination, and comprehension. As reflected in the specialized literature, there are currently few tests that provide a global evaluation of this syndrome. This research created and designed a test for the Evaluation of Upper Limb Apraxia (EULA), based on theoretical models of apraxia. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A sample of 57 patients was selected with subjective cognitive manifestations (complaints of cog…

Conceptual- and production-related predictors of pantomimed tool use deficits in apraxia.

Apraxia following left hemisphere stroke disrupts pantomimed tool use (PTU), a task that requires the integrity of a number of cognitive and motor processes. Although previous studies have identified that apraxics have deficits in (1) the integrity of/access to stored tool-use gesture representations, (2) deficits in intrinsic (body-based) coordinate control, and (3) abnormal reliance on visual feedback, no study to date has simultaneously tested the relative contribution of these three deficits to poor PTU performance. In this study we assessed 38 chronic left hemisphere stroke survivors on t

Comparison of visual sensitivity to human and object motion in autism spectrum disorder.

Successful social behavior requires the accurate detection of other people's movements. Consistent with this, typical observers demonstrate enhanced visual sensitivity to human movement relative to equally complex, nonhuman movement [e.g., Pinto & Shiffrar, 2009]. A psychophysical study investigated visual sensitivity to human motion relative to object motion in observers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Participants viewed point-light depictions of a moving person and, for comparison, a moving tractor and discriminated between coherent and scrambled versions of these stimuli in unmasked a

Tapping, grasping and aiming in ideomotor apraxia.

Very few studies have investigated sensorimotor control in apraxia using tasks that differ in movement complexity. Nevertheless, there is some evidence to suggest that spontaneous behaviour, although relatively preserved, can be rather clumsy or awkward, and that patients with ideomotor apraxia may have subtle kinematic abnormalities in movements made in the laboratory. It remains unclear whether patients with ideomotor apraxia perform normally on movements such as visually guided aiming, that may not depend on higher-order, more cognitive, processes and that are relatively unguided by overlea

Limb apraxia: cortical or subcortical.

Ideomotor apraxia is defined as a disturbance in timing, sequencing, and spatial organization of gestural movements. Left hemisphere motor dominance reflected by ideomotor apraxia mainly refers to spatially and temporally complex movements performed outside the natural context. While clinicoanatomical studies have failed to unveil a specific lesion correlating with apraxia, white matter damage-interrupting corticocortical and corticosubcortical connections-seems crucial for the deficit to be persistent and severe. Patients with basal ganglia lesions and disorders, such as Parkinson's disease a

Disruption of spatial organization and interjoint coordination in Parkinson's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, and multiple system atrophy.

Patients with basal ganglia diseases may exhibit ideomotor apraxia. To define the nature of the impairment of the action production system, we studied a repetitive gesture of slicing bread by three-dimensional computergraphic analysis in eight nondemented patients with Parkinson's disease in the "on" state, five with progressive supranuclear palsy and four with multiple system atrophy. Two patients with Parkinson's disease and two with progressive supranuclear palsy showed ideomotor apraxia for transitive movements on standard testing. A Selspott II system was used for kinematic analysis of wr

Fulminant form of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis: successful treatment with hypothermia.

We described herein a case of the fulminant form of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) that developed after mycoplasma pneumonia. A 28-year-old man who presented with fever, headache, and writing difficulty was admitted to our hospital in August 1997. He developed hernia on the 3rd hospital day. Surgical decompression and intravenous prednisolone failed to halt his progressive deterioration. We introduced systemic hypothermia and he has shown marked recovery; despite having Broca's type aphasia, he could comprehend spoken language and communicate with others by gesture. Head MRI demon

Women's Reports of Suicidality as a Result of Intimate Partner Violence.

The link between intimate partner violence (IPV) and suicidality has been well-established in empirical literature; yet, these phenomena are typically measured independently and associated via statistical tests. The purpose of this study was to assess whether women reported suicidality directly due to their experiences of IPV victimization. Data were collected from 150 women who experienced IPV and were receiving civil legal services in a Midwest state in the United States. Women were asked if they ever had suicidal thoughts, made suicidal gestures, made a plan for suicide, or attempted suicid…

Cortical and network architectures in limb and oral apraxia.

To characterize the distinct network principles underlying limb and oral apraxias, we investigated the structural brain lesions and white matter disconnections associated with limb apraxia (LA), buccofacial apraxia (BFA), and apraxia of speech (AOS) within a single cohort. In 136 patients with acute left-hemisphere ischemic stroke, LA was assessed using pantomime of tool use and communicative gestures, BFA via non-verbal orofacial movements, and AOS through perceptual evaluation of speech production tasks. We employed voxel-based, region-of-interest-based, and connectome-based lesion-symptom m…

Enabling Automatic Monitoring of Fluid Intake and Medical Adherence by Human Activities Recognition from a Wrist-Mounted MIMU Sensor.

The automatic identification of human activities is an important application for enabling remote home monitoring of health status in elderly and fragile people. Nowadays, commercially available wearable devices found a widespread diffusion, embedding various types of sensors that can be used for correctly recognizing activities of daily living (ADL). This work deals with the identification of ADL based on upper limb gestures from a single magnetic inertial measurement unit (MIMU) placed on the wrist. In particular, emphasis was devoted to the identification of drinking and pill intake, being d…
