Linear nail growth rate is affected by various conditions, one of which is the level of blood flow. Our supposition was that topical minoxidil, which has vasodilatory properties, can increase the rate of nail growth. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of topical minoxidil on nail growth. A 5% topical minoxidil solution was applied twice daily to the fingernails of 32 participants. Two groups of 16 participants were randomly chosen. In one group, the applications were made to the right index and left ring fingernails, and, in the other, the left index and right ring fingernails.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article describes the clinical papers published in 2002 and early 2003 on nutritional and metabolic derangement in inflammatory bowel disease.
RECENT FINDINGS: Insulin-like growth factor 1 and Insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 are decreased in inflammatory bowel disease, and disease therapy hardly reverses this situation. There are promising data on recombinant human growth hormone therapy in paediatric inflammatory bowel disease. Several papers have added some fuel to the debate on the prevalence and pathogenesis of metabolic bone disease in inflammatory bo

Membrane excitability in the axonal growth cones of embryonic neurons influences axon growth. Voltage-gated K+ (Kv) channels are key factors in controlling membrane excitability, but whether they regulate axon growth remains unclear. Here, we report that Kv3.4 is expressed in the axonal growth cones of embryonic spinal commissural neurons, motoneurons, dorsal root ganglion neurons, retinal ganglion cells, and callosal projection neurons during axon growth. Our in vitro (cultured dorsal spinal neurons of chick embryos) and in vivo (developing chick spinal commissural axons and rat callosal axon

Chronic inflammation and nutritional imbalance are important comorbid conditions that correlate with poor clinical outcomes in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Nutritional disorders such as cachexia/protein energy wasting, obesity and growth retardation negatively impact the quality of life and disease progression in children with CKD. Inadequate nutrition has been associated with growth disturbances in children with CKD. On the other hand, over-nutrition and obesity are associated with poor outcomes in children with CKD. The exact mechanisms leading to these unfavorable conditions

BACKGROUND: Meier-Gorlin-syndrome (MGORS) is a rare cause of primordial dwarfism stemming from pathogenic variants in genes involved in DNA replication. The classic clinical triad is microtia, absent patella and short stature. MGORS can mimic endocrine causes of short stature or delayed/atypical pubertal development.
METHODS: We report two new cases of MGORS. A systematic literature search of all cases published up to 31 March 2026 was done to identify the cases reporting any endocrinopathy or hormonal therapy, focussing on growth-hormone-deficiency (GHD) and response to growth hormone (GH).

Chitayat syndrome (CHYTS) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by variants in the ETS2 repressor factor (ERF) gene, located on 19q13.2. This gene encodes the ERF protein. The syndrome is extremely rare, with only 13 patients reported to date. We present a patient of CHYTS resulting from a c.1201_1202del (p.Lys401Glufs∗10) frameshift variant in the ERF (NM_001429.3) gene. The patient, a 10-year-old girl, exhibited typical features of the syndrome such as short stature, facial dysmorphism, and early developmental delay. She was treated with recombinant human growth hormone for ∼5 years due t

BACKGROUND: SET domain-containing 5 (SETD5) is a member of the protein lysine-methyltransferase family. SETD5 gene mutations cause disorders of the epigenetic machinery which determinate phenotypic overlap characterized by several abnormalities. SEDT5 gene variants have been described in patients with KBG and Cornelia de Lange (CdL) syndromes.

Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is a peptide hormone essential for the proper development and growth of the organism, as a complete knockout of Igf1 in mice is lethal, causing microcephaly, growth retardation and the defective development of organs. In the central nervous system, neurons and glia have been reported to express Igf1, but their relative importance for postnatal development has not yet been fully defined. In order to address this, here, we obtained mice with a microglia-specific inducible conditional knockout of Igf1. We show that the deficiency in microglial Igf1, starting i

Recombinant human growth hormone therapy (rhGH) has been widely accepted as the safe treatment for short stature in children with such genetic syndromes as Prader-Willi syndrome and Turner or Noonan syndrome. Some patients with short stature and rare genetic syndromes are treated with rhGH as growth hormone-deficient individuals or as children born small for their gestational age. After years of experience with this therapy in syndromic short stature, it has been proved that there are some aspects of long-term rhGH treatment beyond growth promotion, which can justify rhGH use in these individu

Diabetic retinal disease (DRD), the most common complication of diabetes and a leading cause of blindness in working age individuals, is now understood to be a form of sensory neuropathy or neurovascular degeneration. Current treatments are focused on advanced vision-threatening disease and a single molecular target, vascular endothelial growth factor, has an approved therapy. We trace the evolution of understanding of DRD pathogenesis, identify new approaches to clinical assessment, trials infrastructure and design, and target identification to accelerate selection and evaluation of new thera

Noonan syndrome is characterized by multiple phenotypic features, including growth retardation, which represents the main cause of consultation to the clinician. Longitudinal growth during childhood and adolescence depends on several factors, among them an intact somatotrophic axis, which is characterized by an adequate growth hormone (GH) secretion by the pituitary, subsequent binding to its receptor, proper function of the post-receptor signaling pathway for this hormone (JAK-STAT5b and RAS/MAPK), and ultimately by the production of its main effector, insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Small-for-gestational age (SGA) infants are at risk for short and long term medical and metabolic complications. Most SGA infants (85-90%) demonstrate spontaneous catch-up growth, typically in the first year after birth. Although catch-up growth (CUG) is a desired goal, it is important to note if CUG is too rapid the infants are at increased risk for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus as they become adults. On the flip side, infants who do not exhibit CUG are also at increased risk of adverse adult outcomes including those for cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance and type 2

The achievement of final adult height occurs much earlier than the acquisition of peak bone mass and muscle strength in both genders, males achieving these milestones later than females. This transition period is particularly challenging in adolescents that were treated with GH during childhood. A high percentage of these adolescents in transition are no longer considered GH-deficient at the completion of their linear growth, making it necessary to retest GH reserves using potent secretagogues (such as insulin tolerance tests (ITT) or arginine/GHRH) and more stringent cutoff peaks (<6 ng/ml in

Celiac disease (CD) is a prevalent, genetically determined, autoimmune, chronic inflammatory state caused by intolerance to gluten that results mainly in gastrointestinal manifestations. One of the most common extra-intestinal manifestations of CD is short stature, and in some patients, short stature may be the presenting and only symptom of the disease, making the diagnosis of CD challenging. Impaired growth in children with CD results mainly from nutritional deficits, and withdrawal of gluten from the diet is frequently associated with a marked improvement of linear growth. In some patients,

The identification of adults with severe growth hormone (GH) deficiency (GHD) is not straightforward. The insulin tolerance test remains the gold standard diagnostic test, although other stimuli such as GH-releasing hormone-arginine are gaining acceptance. Insulin-like growth factor-I has a poor diagnostic sensitivity in adult-onset GHD, but is more useful in the subgroup of adults with childhood-onset GHD. Therapeutic developments include increasing recognition of the need to continue GH therapy beyond final height in young adults with severe GHD on retesting. Consensus guidelines have provid

Individuals with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) are shorter, on an average, than the general population. A recent meta analysis of final height in CAH indicated that the height deficit is typically 1 to 2 standard deviations below the mean in both males and females. Growth in CAH due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency is influenced by a number of factors, related both to the underlying disease and its treatment. In general, males with the simple virilising form have the poorest height prognosis. This relates in part to late diagnosis and treatment and the bone age advancement seen in individua
