Shared Neural Representations of Cognitive Conflict and Negative Affect in the Medial Frontal Cortex.

Influential theories of Medial Frontal Cortex (MFC) function suggest that the MFC registers cognitive conflict as an aversive signal, but no study directly tested this idea. Instead, recent studies suggested that nonoverlapping regions in the MFC process conflict and affect. In this preregistered human fMRI study (male and female), we used MVPAs to identify which regions respond similarly to conflict and aversive signals. The results reveal that, of all conflict- and value-related regions, only the ventral pre-supplementary motor area (or dorsal anterior cingulate cortex) showed a shared neura

The neural correlates of context retrieval in false recognition.

Previous research has demonstrated that some false recognitions are accompanied by retrieval of contexts in which the corresponding semantic associates were presented during the study phase. What kind of neural processes support context retrieval in false recognition? Using functional MRI (fMRI), we tested the hypothesis that context retrieval in false recognition might be supported by brain areas in the core recollection network which also support context retrieval in true recognition. During the study, lists of semantically associated words were presented together with scene pictures that se

Intrinsic brain activity associated with eye gaze during mother-child interaction.

Mother-child interactions impact child social development and psychological health. This study focused on eye-gaze interactions, especially eye contact as synchronized gaze, which is an important non-verbal communication tool in human interactions. We performed brain-image analysis of mothers and children using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and quantitatively evaluated the quality of mother-child interactions using the Interaction Rating Scale to investigate how it is related to the frequency of mother-child eye contact. As a result, we found a positive correlation betwee

Longitudinal changes in network homogeneity in presymptomatic C9orf72 mutation carriers.

The risk for carriers of repeat expansion mutations in C9orf72 to develop amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia increases with age. Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have shown reduced connectivity in symptomatic carriers, but it is not known whether connectivity declines throughout life as an acceleration of the normal aging pattern. In this study, we examined intra-network homogeneity (NeHo) in 5 functional networks in 15 presymptomatic C9+ carriers over an 18-month period and compared to repeated scans in 34 healthy controls and 27 symptomatic C9+ carriers. Methods for quantitative susceptibility and R2* mapping in whole post-mortem brains at 7T applied to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Susceptibility weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is sensitive to the local concentration of iron and myelin. Here, we describe a robust image processing pipeline for quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) and R2* mapping of fixed post-mortem, whole-brain data. Using this pipeline, we compare the resulting quantitative maps in brains from patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and controls, with validation against iron and myelin histology. Twelve post-mortem brains were scanned with a multi-echo gradient echo sequence at 7T, from which susceptibility and R2* maps were gen

Intermittent theta-burst stimulation moderates interaction between increment of N-Acetyl-Aspartate in anterior cingulate and improvement of unipolar depression.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS), a novel repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) technique, appears to have antidepressant effects when applied over left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). However, its underlying neurobiological mechanisms are unclear. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) provides in vivo measurements of cerebral metabolites altered in major depressive disorder (MDD) like N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) and choline-containing compounds (Cho). We used MRS to analyse effects of iTBS on the associations between the shifts in the NAA an

Changes in the neural correlates of self-blame following mindfulness-based cognitive therapy in remitted depressed participants.

Mindfulness-Based-Cognitive-Therapy (MBCT) reduces vulnerability for relapse into depression by helping individuals to counter tendencies to engage in maladaptive repetitive patterns of thinking and respond more compassionately to negative self-judgment. However, little is known about the neural correlates underlying these effects. To elucidate these correlates, we investigated fMRI brain activation during a task eliciting feelings of blaming oneself or others. Sixteen participants in remission from major depressive disorder (MDD) completed fMRI assessments before and after MBCT, alongside sel

The rat medial frontal cortex controls pace, but not breakpoint, in a progressive ratio licking task.

The medial frontal cortex (MFC) is crucial for selecting actions and evaluating their outcomes. Outcome monitoring may be triggered by rostral parts of the MFC, which contain neurons that are modulated by reward consumption and are necessary for the expression of relative reward value. Here, we examined if the MFC further has a role in the control of instrumental licking. We used a progressive ratio licking task in which rats had to make increasing numbers of licks to receive liquid sucrose rewards. We determined what measures of progressive ratio performance are sensitive to value by testing

A functional MRI investigation of crossmodal interference in an audiovisual Stroop task.

The visual color-word Stroop task is widely used in clinical and research settings as a measure of cognitive control. Numerous neuroimaging studies have used color-word Stroop tasks to investigate the neural resources supporting cognitive control, but to our knowledge all have used unimodal (typically visual) Stroop paradigms. Thus, it is possible that this classic measure of cognitive control is not capturing the resources involved in multisensory cognitive control. The audiovisual integration and crossmodal correspondence literatures identify regions sensitive to congruency of auditory and v

Brain Functional Basis of Subjective Well-being During Negative Facial Emotion Processing Task-Based fMRI.

Subjective well-being (SWB) is the eternal pursuit of all mankind. Individual differences in SWB may reflect the way of emotional processing. Neuroimaging studies have partly examined the neural mechanism of the individual differences in SWB using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). However, few studies have investigated the relationship between the individual differences in SWB and brain functional connectivity during facial emotion processing task. Here, we applied negative facial emotion processing task-based fMRI to explore the brain functional basis of the indiv

Keeping the pace: The effect of slow-paced breathing on error monitoring.

Detecting errors is crucial for adapting one's own actions. Moreover, behavior is often optimized by adapting to maladaptive actions, i.e. errors. In this regard, recent studies and models of error monitoring point to an involvement of emotional states in error monitoring. A psychophysiological correlate of the latter is the error negativity or error-related negativity (Ne/ERN), reflecting partly the functional implementation of anterior cingulate cortex functions. In the present study, we aimed to test whether neurophysiological aspects of error monitoring can be altered by a relaxation techn

Corticostriatal-limbic correlates of sub-clinical obsessive-compulsive traits.

Obsessive-compulsive (OC) traits such as intrusive worrisome ideas or excessive concerns for threats are frequent in general population (5%-13%). However, the structural neural correlates of the sub-clinical OC traits remain largely unknown. Based on the data of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), we hypothesized that the subcortical and cortical structures, constituting the cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical circuit (CSTC) and the limbic system, could be associated with OC traits. Here we conducted voxel-based morphometry (VBM) in order to investigate fine grained volume changes of these stru

Efficacy and Safety of Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Prospective Multicenter Randomized Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic and disabling condition that often responds unsatisfactorily to pharmacological and psychological treatments. Converging evidence suggests a dysfunction of the cortical-striatal-thalamic-cortical circuit in OCD, and a previous feasibility study indicated beneficial effects of deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) targeting the medial prefrontal cortex and the anterior cingulate cortex. The authors examined the therapeutic effect of dTMS in a multicenter double-blind sham-controlled study. METHODS: At 11 centers, 99 OCD patien

Altered structural brain network resulting from white matter injury in obstructive sleep apnea.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To assess, using fractional anisotropy (FA) analysis, alterations of brain network connectivity in adults with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Abnormal networks could mediate clinical functional deficits and reflect brain tissue injury. METHODS: Structural brain networks were constructed using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) from 165 healthy (age 57.99 ± 6.02 years, male 27.9%) and 135 OSA participants (age 59.01 ± 5.91 years, male 28.9%) and global network properties (strength, global efficiency, and local efficiency) and regional efficiency were compared between groups. 7T Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy of the Anterior Cingulate Cortex in First-Episode Schizophrenia.

Recent magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) studies suggest that abnormalities of the glutamatergic system in schizophrenia may be dependent on illness stage, medication status, and symptomatology. Glutamatergic metabolites appear to be elevated in the prodromal and early stages of schizophrenia but unchanged or reduced below normal in chronic, medicated patients. However, few of these studies have measured metabolites with high-field 7T MR scanners, which offer higher signal-to-noise ratio and better spectral resolution than 3T scanners and facilitate separation of glutamate and glutamine in

Dorsal anterior cingulate-brainstem ensemble as a reinforcement meta-learner.

Optimal decision-making is based on integrating information from several dimensions of decisional space (e.g., reward expectation, cost estimation, effort exertion). Despite considerable empirical and theoretical efforts, the computational and neural bases of such multidimensional integration have remained largely elusive. Here we propose that the current theoretical stalemate may be broken by considering the computational properties of a cortical-subcortical circuit involving the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and the brainstem neuromodulatory nuclei: ventral tegmental area (VTA) and

Neural Correlates of Suicidality in Adolescents with Major Depression: Resting-State Functional Connectivity of the Precuneus and Posterior Cingulate Cortex.

OBJECTIVE: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors ("suicidality"). Of the three components of Joiner's interpersonal theory of suicide, two involve negatively valenced, self-related beliefs: perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness. However, the neurocircuitry underlying self-processing and suicidality has not been fully explored. This study examined the association between suicidality and the neurocircuitry of regions relevant to self-referential processing in adolescents with depression. METHOD: Fifty-eight adolescents underwent assessm

Development of Posterior Medial Frontal Cortex Function in Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal engagement of the posterior medial frontal cortex (pMFC) occurs during performance monitoring in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), including in pediatric patients. Yet, the development of pMFC function in OCD-affected youth remains poorly understood. METHOD: A total of 69 patients with pediatric OCD and 72 healthy controls (HC), 8 to 19 years of age, were scanned during the Multisource Interference Task (MSIT). The effects of group, age, performance, and interactions on pMFC response to errors and interference were tested in the region of interest [ROI]) and whole-brain

MicroRNA Expression Levels Are Altered in the Cerebrospinal Fluid of Patients with Young-Onset Alzheimer's Disease.

Clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) prior to the age of 65 years is classified as young-onset (YOAD), whereas diagnosis after the age of 65 years is considered late-onset (LOAD). Although rare autosomal mutations more commonly associate with YOAD, most YOAD and LOAD cases are sporadic. YOAD and LOAD share amyloid and tau pathology, but many YOAD patients show increased disease severity and rate of progression. The current study examined the microRNA (miRNA) expression profile from exosomes isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of YOAD patients with biomarker-confirmed AD. Resu
