Acrogeric Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV: report of a new patient with additional findings.

We report a 21 year-old Turkish male with acrogeric Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV, a rare autosomal dominant disorder. In addition to the usual findings, the patient also had glaucoma and some unusual skeletal features including impressio digitalis in the skull, prognathism of the lower jaw and maxiller hypoplasia, not previously described as part of acrogeric Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV. These features expand the phenotypic spectrum of acrogeric Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV.

Vertebral anomalies in a new family with ODED syndrome.

We report a new family with oculodigitoesophagoduodenal syndrome (ODED syndrome), which associates microcephaly, abnormalities of the hands and feet, shortened palpebral fissures, tracheoesophageal fistula and duodenal atresia. In addition, previously unreported vertebral anomalies are described. This report further delineates the clinical and radiographic spectrum of this syndrome, providing useful information for diagnosis and family counseling.

Blepharophimosis, hypoplastic radius, hypoplastic left heart, telecanthus, hydronephrosis, fused metacarpals, and "prehensile" halluces: a new syndrome?

We report on the prenatal ultrasound and postnatal findings in an infant born to a healthy, nonconsanguineous couple. The infant had microcephaly, telecanthus, blepharophimosis, cleft palate, micrognathia, abnormally modeled ears, hypoplastic left heart, hypoplastic radii and ulnae with radial subluxation, pseudoarthrotic distal humeri, fused metacarpals, tibial bowing, unusual feet with long halluces, hydronephrosis, patent urachus, abnormal electroencephalogram, and normal karyotype. To our knowledge, this combination of anomalies has not been recognized previously and may represent a new co

Magnetic resonance imaging in macromelia and macrodactyly.

We report five cases presenting with soft tissue and bone overgrowth that demonstrate the ability of MRI to establish a diagnosis in the absence of specific clinical features. Disorders included macrodystrophia lipomatosa, angiolipomatosis, Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome, blue rubber bleb naevus syndrome and one case of segmental limited hypertrophy. The MRI appearances, and other radiological features of these conditions are discussed. MRI is recommended in all cases of macrodystrophy when the clinical features and plain film findings are indeterminate.

Radiologic findings in the Proteus syndrome.

The radiological findings in two patients with the Proteus syndrome are described. Features in our two cases not previously mentioned or stressed include vertebral dysplasia and enlargement (megaspondylodysplasia), bilateral genu valgum, recurrent after surgery and intraabdominal and mesenteric lipomatosis. Emergency laparotomy was performed on the first patient who had a twisted necrotic portion of mesenteric fat. Macrodactyly, skeletal muscle atrophy and subcutaneous fat accumulation in the abdominal wall were present in both. In addition the second patient was mentally retarded and had fron

Brief clinical report: two children with de novo del(9p).

We describe two patients with characteristic manifestations of the del(9p) syndrome. Among the prominent manifestation are moderate mental retardation, trigonocephaly, flat nasal bridge, anteverted nostrils, long philtrum, square and hyperconvex nails, and apparently long digits. The metacarpophalangeal pattern profiles of the patients showed that the clinical impression of long fingers may be due to relative shortness of the metacarpals rather than to elongation of the phalanges.

The community of human malformation syndromes that shares ectodermal dysplasia and deformities of the hands and feet.

Syndromes of human congenital malformation may be classified be recognizing communities of syndromes that share multiple phenotypic similarities involving their principal diagnostic features. A community of syndromes that shares various expressions of ectodermal dysplasia and various deformities of the hands and feet is proposed; these syndromes are divisible into two classes according to the presence or absence of anomalies in the nasal or labial regions of the face. The dysmorphogenetic validity of the division is supported by the fact that the syndromes without nasal or labial anomalies hav

Guillain-Barre Syndrome in a Patient With Asymptomatic Coronavirus Disease 2019 Infection and Major Depressive Disorder.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a devastating effect on all aspects of society, including the economy, healthcare, and educational institutions. One underrecognized effect of the pandemic is the decline of mental health in our communities. Studies have shown that pandemic-related stress is associated with increased depression and anxiety. In addition to worsening mental health, COVID-19 infection has been shown to have neurological manifestations. We report the case of a 56-year-old woman with a history of major depressive disorder and alcohol use with no recent history of infectio

Mutation of the highly conserved amino acids in the N-terminal region of the EV-A71 VP1 protein impairs viral RNA release during virus entry.

UNLABELLED: Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) causes hand-foot-mouth disease, which may progress to severe neurological and systemic complications in young children and infants. To deliver viral genomic RNA into the target cell for replication, the mature EV-A71 capsid particle undergoes drastic structural changes to become an expanded A particle, which is marked by the movement of the N-terminal region of viral protein VP1 from the interior to the capsid surface and the dislodgement of the pocket factor. It is not completely understood which amino acids support these key activities of VP1 during EV-A7

Phylogeography of Coxsackievirus A16 Reveals Global Transmission Pathways and Recent Emergence and Spread of a Recombinant Genogroup.

Coxsackievirus A16 (CV-A16; Picornaviridae) is an enterovirus (EV) type associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in children. To investigate the spatial spread of CV-A16, we used viral sequence data sampled during a prospective sentinel surveillance of HFMD in France (2010 to 2014) and phylogenetic reconstruction. A data set of 168 VP1 sequences was assembled with 416 publicly available sequences of various geographic origins. The CV-A16 sequences reported were assigned to two clades, genogroup B and a previously uncharacterized clade D. The time origins of clades B and D were asse

[A Case of Nephrotic Syndrome Developing Early After Initiation of Fruquintinib Therapy].

Fruquintinib (FRU) is a vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR)-1, 2, 3 tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) approved for metastatic colorectal cancer. While hypertension, fatigue, and hand-foot syndrome are common adverse events, severe proteinuria and nephrotic syndrome are rare and has not been reported in clinical trials. A woman in her 60s with recurrent rectal cancer began fruquintinib at 5 mg/d as a 4th-line treatment. She had a history of hypertension and was taking amlodipine. On day 8 of the first cycle, she developed hypertension (grade 2) . On day 22, proteinuria (grade 3) w…

Long-term follow-up in patients with CCFDN syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: We describe the 10-year follow-up in a cohort of 16 patients with genetically confirmed congenital cataracts, facial dysmorphism, and neuropathy (CCFDN) syndrome, providing new insights in the clinical course of the disease. METHODS: We performed a detailed clinical and paraclinical characterization and 10-year follow-up study in 16 patients with molecularly defined CCFDN syndrome, illustrating that CCFDN is a severe disabling disorder. RESULTS: All patients initially presented with congenital cataracts along with strabismus, facial dysmorphism, short stature, and demyelinating ne

Outcome of the Management of Patients with Tropical Diabetic Hand Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Tropical Diabetic Hand Syndrome (TDHS) is an acute, rapidly progressive hand infection affecting patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), often following trivial trauma. Unlike those with diabetic foot disease, neuropathy and vasculopathy play a minor role, while poor glycaemic control, delayed presentation, and minor injuries are key risk factors. TDHS is often not recognised in Nigeria despite its potential for disability and mortality. This study reviews the management outcomes of patients presenting with TDHS at a tertiary hospital in Nigeria. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective review
