Development and Evaluation of a Novel Transcanal Catheter for Delivery of Hypothermia to the Inner Ear.

Mild therapeutic hypothermia (MTH) has demonstrated neuroprotective effects in the cochlea, particularly against noise-induced and electrode insertion trauma, by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. Prior cadaveric studies have shown that localized cochlear cooling can be achieved using a probe placed on the promontory or a surface cooling device placed on the mastoid. While the effects of MTH on the vestibular system remain unstudied, its proximity and physiological similarity to the cochlea suggest potential benefits. We aimed to develop the first noninvasive, localized MTH device for

A Novel Shielding Device for Cardiac Cath Labs.

This research evaluates the effectiveness of a large specialized cardiac catheterization laboratory shielding device (SCCLSD) placed perpendicular to the patient compared to traditional shielding methods in reducing occupational exposure to scattered x rays, contributing to the ongoing enhancement of radiation safety in the cardiac catheterization laboratory (CCL) setting. An experimental setup involving an anthropomorphic phantom on the catheterization table simulated radiation scatter from a patient. Measurements were taken systematically at various grid points and heights in the CCL using a

Administration of selective brain hypothermia using a simple cooling device in neonatal rats.

BACKGROUND: The interruption of oxygen and blood supply to the newborn brain around the time of birth is a risk factor for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and may lead to infant mortality or lifelong neurological impairments. Currently, therapeutic hypothermia, the cooling of the infant's head or entire body, is the only treatment to curb the extent of brain damage. NEW METHOD: In this study, we designed a focal brain cooling device that circulates cooled water at a steady state temperature of 19 ± 1 °C through a coil of tubing fitted onto the neonatal rat's head. We tested its ability to sel

Association of In-Ear Device Use With Communication Quality Among Individuals Wearing Personal Protective Equipment in a Simulated Operating Room.

IMPORTANCE: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought forth new challenges for health care workers, such as the daily use of personal protective equipment, including reusable facial respirators. Poor communication while wearing respirators may have fatal complications for patients, and no solution has been proposed to date. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether use of an in-ear communication device is associated with improved communication while wearing different personal protective equipment (N95 mask, half-face elastomeric respirator, and powered air-purifying respirator [PAPR]) in the operating room. DES

Vertical accelerator device to apply loads simulating blast environments in the military to human surrogates.

The objective of the study was to develop a simple device, Vertical accelerator (Vertac), to apply vertical impact loads to Post Mortem Human Subject (PMHS) or dummy surrogates because injuries sustained in military conflicts are associated with this vector; example, under-body blasts from explosive devices/events. The two-part mechanically controlled device consisted of load-application and load-receiving sections connected by a lever arm. The former section incorporated a falling weight to impact one end of the lever arm inducing a reaction at the other/load-receiving end. The "launch-plate"

Pressure ulcers in maturing skin - A clinical perspective.

While the problem of Pressure Ulcers (PU) in adults has received a great deal of attention, far less is known about PUs in neonates and children. The overall health status of children is generally better and multi-morbidity is limited to a small percentage of patients, like very low term neonates (born before 32 weeks of gestation age), newborns with congenital abnormalities, genetic disorders, perinatal distress syndrome or children with a limited immunity. Survival rates of both critically and chronically ill neonates, infants and children have improved dramatically in recent years, introduc

Skull bone flap fixation--comparative experimental study to assess the reliability of a new grip-like titanium device (Skull Grip) versus traditional sutures: technical note.

INTRODUCTION: After completing a craniotomy, whenever possible, it is crucial to replace and fix the removed bone flap to the cranium; this in order to keep the brain's protection as well as for cosmetic purposes. Visible skull defects might cause patients psychosocial problems and, most importantly, expose the brain to accidental damage. A fixation device should not only provide optimal attachment of the flap to the skull but also allow fast bony healing to avoid possible pseudoarthrosis and/or osteolytic changes. METHODS: After performing 12 different craniotomies on 4 human cadaver heads t

The effect of rear-seat overloading in a car crash: pathological and kinematics evidences.

Seat belts have been shown to decrease the incidence of lethal lesions to the head, chest, and abdomen. Since the introduction of seat belts, it is reported that the incidence of traumatic lesions in these body parts is reduced. In the meantime, the characteristic lesions to the chest and abdomen caused by the use of seat belts are described (J Trauma. 2007;62(6):1473-1480).Reported is a peculiar case of an oblique front-to-rear car collision, in which overloading of the rear seat with packages pushed forward the passenger front seat in an abnormal way, causing fatal thoracic and abdominal les

Pathomechanics, gait deviations, and treatment of the rheumatoid foot: a clinical report.

This article describes the five major foot deformities or problems often seen in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: hallux valgus, pronation of the foot, depression of the metatarsal heads, hammer or claw toes, and tendocalcaneal bursitis or subplantar spur formation. These deformities contribute to the development of common rheumatoid gait deviations such as decreased velocity, cadence, and stride length; poor heel-toe pattern; and abnormal patterns of weight bearing. Nonsurgical treatment for these problems includes joint protection methods, assistive gait devices, orthotic intervention, an

A Retrospective Cohort Study of Traumatic Brain Injury and Usage of Protective Headgear During Equestrian Activities.

Some of the more popular sporting activities for those living in rural areas include equestrian activities such as rodeo events and horseback riding. The lack of helmet use poses a concern for those who participate in these activities due to the risk of sustaining a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and ultimately having a negative effect on their future. A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a trauma center comparing the data on animal-riding patients and their use or lack of use of headgear and incidence of TBI. Of the patients identified, 16.2% sustained a head injury, ranking TBI fourth

A population-based case-control study of hospitalisation due to head injuries among bicyclists and motorcyclists in Taiwan.

INTRODUCTION: According to official statistics in Taiwan, the main body region of injury causing bicyclist deaths is the head, and bicyclists are 2.6 times more likely to be fatally injured than motorcyclists. There is currently a national helmet law for motorcyclists but not for bicyclists. OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of this study was to determine whether bicyclist casualties have higher odds of head-related hospitalisation than motorcyclists. This study also aims to investigate the determinants of head injury-related hospitalisation among bicyclists and motorcyclists. METHODS: Using linke

A comparison of injuries to moped/scooter and motorcycle riders in Queensland, Australia.

BACKGROUND: The popularity of moped and motor scooter riding in Australia is increasing. However, there is a paucity of information about their safety, especially in comparison to motorcycle riding where riders require specific licensing, education and training. Given it is widely established that motorcycle riders are overrepresented in road injury statistics, consideration of moped and scooter riders as a sub-group of all motorcyclists is required for accurate understanding of injury patterns and the acute care needs of this group. METHOD: A comparison of demographic, injury and acute care
