Increasing the capacity of community managed organisations to provide chronic disease preventive care to people with a mental health condition: protocol for a cluster-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive and routine provision of preventive care for modifiable risk factors within mental health community managed organisations (CMOs) is variable. METHODS: This protocol describes a planned cluster-randomised controlled trial to support the delivery of such care within a large Australian CMO. A model of care and implementation support strategies will be co-designed and delivered across six months, with 12 CMO sites randomised to intervention or control groups. The model of care referred to as 'The Live Well and Flourish Framework' will guide staff in intervention sites th

Inequalities in the Ability for People With Type 2 Diabetes and Prediabetes to Adapt to the Reduction in In-Person Health Support and Increased Use of Digital Support During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented challenges for people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and prediabetes to access in-person health care support. Primary care teams accelerated plans to implement digital health technologies (DHTs), such as remote consultations and digital self-management. There is limited evidence about whether there were inequalities in how people with T2D and prediabetes adjusted to these changes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore how people with T2D and prediabetes adapted to the reduction in in-person health support and the increased provision of supp

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders in Australia--the future is prevention.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are increasingly recognised throughout Australia as important, but preventable, disorders that result in lifelong problems with health and learning, mental health, behaviour and substance misuse. The role of this article is to highlight current efforts, which are in their infancy, to recognise and prevent FASD in Australia. A federal parliamentary inquiry into FASD (2011), development of an Australian Government 'action plan' to prevent FASD (2013) and the announcement in June 2014 of government funding to progress the plan and appoint a National FASD Te

Mental health services in Croatia-current perspectives and future challenges.

We examine the current state and challenges of mental health services in the Republic of Croatia, a Central European country with a population of 3.87 million. Croatia's healthcare system delivers mental health services across primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, largely supported by the Croatian Health Insurance Fund, which administers the country's universal healthcare system, ensuring wide accessibility. Key policy frameworks include the Strategic Framework for the Development of Mental Health until 2030 and the Action Plan in Addictions. However, challenges persist, including a lack of

Social Support Modifies the Pain-Disability Relationship in Degenerative Spine Disease: Evidence From the PROGRES Study.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain from degenerative spine disease is the main contributor to years lived with disability globally. Although social support is a multifaceted construct with both health-promoting and potentially deleterious effects on chronic pain, whether perceived social support modifies the pain-disability relationship in lumbar degenerative spine disease remains unclear. We hypothesised that social support level would modify the pain-disability association, with distinct predictor patterns of disability emerging for low- versus high-support patients. METHODS: In this cross-sectional

The Harris Center: Expanding Integrated Care with Partnerships Beyond Traditional Clinic Walls.

Integrated behavioral health care has advanced from simple service colocation to a coordinated, system-wide approach that connects behavioral health, primary care, emergency medicine, social services, and community support. Health systems increasingly rely on partnerships to address the complex medical and social needs driving population health outcomes. The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD (The Harris Center) illustrates this evolution, operating as a comprehensive population health partner that serves nearly 90,000 individuals annually across Harris County. Through deep integration wi

Society of family planning clinical recommendations: Contraception and abortion care for persons who use substances.

Substance use and substance use disorder remain significant public health crises. Substance use disorder, or addiction, is a stigmatized and misunderstood disease. Accessing contraception and abortion care is particularly challenging, as people who use substances or are diagnosed with substance use disorder often experience internalized stigma and overt discrimination within the healthcare system. There are limited recommendations for the clinical care of persons with substance use disorder who seek abortion or contraception care, and limited data to support these recommendations. This Society

Implementing computer‑aided detection for TB active case finding: A qualitative study of feasibility and acceptability in Tondo, Manila.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent, with over 1.23 million deaths globally in 2024. Despite available treatment and prevention strategies, timely and accurate detection remains challenging, particularly in high-burden settings such as the Philippines, which accounted for 6.8% of the global burden of TB in 2024. Computer-aided detection (CAD) software integrated with digital chest X-ray offers enhanced screening capacity, but its success depends on feasibility and acceptability within local health systems. This qualitative study explored percepti

Scaling up newborn care in Afghanistan: opportunities and challenges for the health sector.

Newborn health in Afghanistan is receiving increased attention, but reduction in newborn deaths there has not kept pace with declines in maternal and child mortality. Using the continuum of care and health systems building block frameworks, this article identifies, organizes and provides a synthesis of the available evidence on and gaps in coverage of care and health systems, programmes, policies and practices related to newborn health in Afghanistan. Newborn mortality in Afghanistan is related to the nation's weak health system, itself associated with decades of conflict, low and uneven cover

Health promotion policy in Sweden: means and methods in intersectoral action.

In Sweden different commissions have been working on legislation, prevention programmes and financing, and have aimed at implementing the Health For All strategy at national level. National programmes for cardiovascular diseases, cancer, accidental injuries, etc were established by parliamentary resolution in 1985. The role of health education has been extended: from the earlier concern with matters of individual lifestyle the focus has shifted towards motivating the community as a whole to take an active interest in its health. There is good public support in the areas of legislation, knowled

Ruminating on rudeness: Exploring veterinarians' experiences of client incivility.

BACKGROUND: Interactions with clients have been identified as a key potential stressor within veterinary practice. However, there is a lack of research investigating the experience, and impact, of specific behaviours, such as incivility. The current study aimed to address this literature gap by investigating veterinarian perceptions of client rudeness. METHOD: Telephone interviews (n = 18) were used to gather qualitative data regarding veterinarian perceptions of client rudeness. This encompassed description of an uncivil interaction, potential causes of incivility, the impact on the veterina

Observed and perceived walkability among young adults in San Francisco: spatial divergence, neighborhood inequality, and self-rated health.

Walkability is a common built environment measure for guiding health-supportive planning. However, built environment metrics do not necessarily capture resident experiences of neighborhood walkability. This study examines observed audit-based walkability and resident-perceived walkability in San Francisco as complementary but distinct measures of neighborhood walkability and examines their spatial relationships with neighborhood sociodemographic characteristics and young adult self-rated health. Data come from the 2014-2020 Bay Area Young Adult Health Panel Study, a probabilistic stratified sa
