Results and Quality of Life after Implantation of Active Middle Ear Implants.

The provision of implantable hearing aids represents an area with high development and innovation potential. On the one hand, this review article provides an overview of current indication criteria for the treatment with active middle ear implants. On the other hand, outcome parameters as well as functional results after implantation of active middle ear implants are demonstrated and discussed. The focus is mainly placed on audiological results as well as the subjective health status. "Patient Reported Outcome Measures" (PROMs) have become an integral part of the evaluation of hearing implant

Proteomic Signatures of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in the Mouse Cochlea.

Hearing loss affects over 1.5 billion people worldwide and has substantial social, educational, and economic consequences. Although genetic studies have identified numerous hearing-loss-associated genes, the molecular changes accompanying noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) remain incompletely understood. We characterized the adult mouse cochlear proteome following damaging noise exposure using nano-LC-MS/MS and an integrative bioinformatics workflow. Comparative profiling of normal-hearing and NIHL cochleae identified 1742 proteins and an 80-protein NIHL-associated signature comprising 49 quant

Long-term prognosis for hearing recovery in stroke patients presenting vertigo and acute hearing loss.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Vertebrobasilar ischemic stroke (VBIS) can cause acute hearing loss (AHL) because the vertebrobasilar system supplies most of the auditory system including the inner ear. The aim of this study was to assess the long-term prognosis of AHL associated with VBIS. METHODS: Over 12.5 years, 62 patients with AHL of a vascular cause who were followed for at least 1 year (mean, 49.2 months; SD, 24.4 months) were enrolled in this study. Quantitative audiovestibular function testing was performed during the acute (mostly within 10 days after symptom onset) and last follow-up peri

Comparison of cochlear morphology and apoptosis in mouse models of presbycusis.

OBJECTIVES: Morphological studies on presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss, have been performed in several different strains of mice that demonstrate hearing loss with auditory pathology. The C57BL/6 (C57) mouse is a known model of early onset presbycusis, while the CBA mouse is characterized by relatively late onset hearing loss. We performed this study to further understand how early onset hearing loss is related with the aging process of the cochlea. METHODS: We compared C57 cochlear pathology and its accompanying apoptotic processes to those in CBA mice. Hearing thresholds and outer ha

The Role of Primary Mitochondrial Disorders in Hearing Impairment: An Overview.

Background. Defects of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) involved in the function of the mitochondrial electron transport chain can result in primary mitochondrial diseases (PMDs). Various features can influence the phenotypes of different PMDs, with relevant consequences on clinical presentation, including the presence of hearing impairment. This paper aims to describe the hearing loss related to different PMDs, and when possible, their phenotype. Methods. A systematic review was performed according to PRISMA guidelines, searching Medline until December 2022. A total of 485 papers were identified, an

Audiovestibular function in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).

CONCLUSION: It was found that JIR children had potential sensory neural hearing loss and vestibular affection. Therefore, this study recommends: early complete audiologic evaluation of JIA child followed by regular follow-up, including TOAEs, extended high-frequency audiometry, and VNG. This follow-up is important for preliminary diagnosis and management in order to prevent the negative impact of hearing loss on a child's life. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess hearing in children with Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and compare them with a healthy control group. In addition

Updating the nationwide methodology for hearing screening of newborns in the Czech Republic.

Screening programs examining neonatal hearing serve to detect hearing defects, as a prerequisite for hearing rehabilitation, communication skills, and the enhancement of speech development. There are two methods through which neonatal hearing screening is carried out - the transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) or the automatic BERA (AABR, automated auditory brainstem response). Positive screening means the discovery of a hearing defect (permanent hearing loss), and negative screening (normal TEOAE or the AABR results) means the absence of a hearing defect. The procedural aim is to u

Hemangioma of the temporal bone in a patient presumed to have Ménière's syndrome.

This case report describes a patient with a facial nerve hemangioma of 8 years' duration that initially caused most of the symptoms of Ménière's syndrome: fullness, sensorineural hearing loss, dizziness, tinnitus, and disruption of balance. The hearing loss was in the high-frequency range (> or = 3,000 Hz); typically, the initial hearing loss in Ménière's syndrome is in the low-frequency range. Mild facial nerve weakness and punctate keratitis due to corneal exposure appeared 8 years later. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging and high-resolution computed tomography depicted the lesion

Monoallelic loss of the F-actin-binding protein radixin facilitates startle reactivity and pre-pulse inhibition in mice.

Hearing impairment is one of the most common disorders with a global burden and increasing prevalence in an ever-aging population. Previous research has largely focused on peripheral sensory perception, while the brain circuits of auditory processing and integration remain poorly understood. Mutations in the rdx gene, encoding the F-actin binding protein radixin (Rdx), can induce hearing loss in human patients and homozygous depletion of Rdx causes deafness in mice. However, the precise physiological function of Rdx in hearing and auditory information processing is still ill-defined. Here, we

Can Cochlear Implantation in Older Adults Reverse Cognitive Decline Due to Hearing Loss?

INTRODUCTION: Older adults with late-onset hearing loss are at risk for cognitive decline. Our study addresses the question of whether cochlear implantation (CI) can counteract this potential influence. We investigated whether cognitive performance in older adults with severe and profound hearing loss improves 12 months after CI to a level comparable to controls with normal hearing, matched for age, sex, and education level. DESIGN: This cohort study was performed at two tertiary referral centers. The study included 29 patients, of age between 60 and 80 years, with adult-onset, severe to prof

A requirement for Fgfr2 in middle ear development.

The skeletal structure of the mammalian middle ear, which is composed of three endochondral ossicles suspended within a membranous air-filled capsule, plays a critical role in conducting sound. Gene mutations that alter skeletal development in the middle ear result in auditory impairment. Mutations in fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2), an important regulator of endochondral and intramembranous bone formation, cause a spectrum of congenital skeletal disorders featuring conductive hearing loss. Although the middle ear malformations in multiple FGFR2 gain-of-function disorders are clini

Improved variant detection using long-read sequencing and optical mapping: Illustration in STRC-related hearing loss.

Biallelic loss-of-function variants in STRC contribute to mild-moderate hearing loss (DFNB16). Here, we report a female patient with mild hearing loss. Exome sequencing and MLPA analysis revealed STRC biallelic inactivation due to a nonsense and a CKMT1B-STRC deletion. Analysis of the self-reported normal-hearing parents revealed inconsistent Mendelian inheritance. Indeed, the mother was a heterozygous carrier of a CKTM1B-STRC-CATSPER2 deletion, and the father shared the same genotype as his daughter. He was later found to also have mild-moderate hearing loss. To address these discrepancies, w

Mild Therapeutic Hypothermia and Putative Mechanisms of Hair Cell Survival in the Cochlea.

Significance: Sensorineural hearing loss has significant implications for quality of life and risk for comorbidities such as cognitive decline. Noise and ototoxic drugs represent two common risk factors for acquired hearing loss that are potentially preventable. Recent Advances: Numerous otoprotection strategies have been postulated over the past four decades with primary targets of upstream redox pathways. More recently, the application of mild therapeutic hypothermia (TH) has shown promise for otoprotection for multiple forms of acquired hearing loss. Critical Issues: Systemic antioxidant th

Gesture, communication, and adult acquired hearing loss.

Nonverbal communication, specifically hand and arm movements (commonly known as gesture), has long been recognized and explored as a significant element in human interaction as well as potential compensatory behavior for individuals with communication difficulties. The use of gesture as a compensatory communication method in expressive and receptive human communication disorders has been the subject of much investigation. Yet within the context of adult acquired hearing loss, gesture has received limited research attention and much remains unknown about patterns of nonverbal behaviors in conve

Age-dependent modifications of expression level of VEGF and its receptors in the inner ear.

The mechanisms responsible for age-associated hearing loss are still incompletely characterized. In this study, we used a murine model of age-dependent hearing loss and evaluated whether this condition is associated with vascular modifications of the structures of the inner ear. We used old C57BL/6J mice that are affected by rapid and severe age-related hearing loss, and analyzed the expression pattern of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a prototypical angiogenic cytokine, and its receptors Flt-1 and Flk-1 in the inner ear. We report for the first time morphological and quantitative

The effect of a hearing aid on the speech-reception threshold of hearing-impaired listeners in quiet and in noise.

The monaural free-field speech-reception threshold (SRT) without and with a hearing aid was investigated for conversational sentences presented to 50 hearing-impaired listeners. SRT without a hearing aid was measured in quiet and in noise levels of 40, 55, 70, and 85 dBA. SRT with a hearing aid was obtained in quiet and at noise levels of 25, 40, 55, and 70 dBA. The noise had a long-term average spectrum equal to that of the sentences. The 50 subjects were equally distributed over five degrees of pure-tone hearing loss and five types of hearing impairment (sensorineural high-frequency losses,

Patterns in the performance-intensity functions for phonetically balanced word lists and synthetic sentences in aged listeners.

The performance intensity-phonetically balanced (PI-PB) and performance intensity-synthetic sentence identification (PI-SSI) functions were determined for 62 elderly patients (100 ears) with presbyacusis. A comparison of these functions was performed to determine whether patients older than 60 years exhibited peripheral or central PI-PB/PI-SSI patterning. Fifty-eight ears of the 100 ears examined showed central patterning. Furthermore, two diagnostically important central patterns were identified. The implications of the current data as well as the clinical application of PI-PB/PI-SSI testing
