Pirenzepine-sensitive component of forelimb vascular resistance and heart rate in cats.

In vagotomized, midcollicular decerebrate, non-anesthetized cats, in which the preganglionic input to the stellate ganglion was intact and the right forelimb was autoperfused at constant flow, the muscarinic receptor antagonist pirenzepine (PZP, 50 micrograms/kg i.v.), which does not cross the blood-brain barrier, produced a decrease in forelimb perfusion pressure (FLPP), heart rate (HR) and systemic arterial pressure (SAP). Administration of the nicotinic receptor antagonist hexamethonium (30 mg/kg i.v.) after PZP produced a further, larger drop in FLPP, HR and SAP. The dose of PZP used block…

The effects of centrally administered adenosine on fetal sheep heart rate accelerations.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the effect of administering a long-acting adenosine analog, L-2-N6-(phenylisopropyl) adenosine, into the cerebrospinal fluid of the fourth ventricle on fetal sheep heart rate accelerations. STUDY DESIGN: Pregnant ewes between 123 and 130 days' gestation were anesthetized, and the fetal head was exteriorized. Catheters were placed in the fourth cerebral ventricle through the foramen magnum and in the brachial artery to record fetal heart rate. Studies were performed in unanesthetized fetuses 4 to 7 days after surgery. Accelerations were defined as a 10 beats/min rise in …

Effects of cocaine on baroreflex control of heart rate in conscious rats.

Cocaine administration elicits a pressor response reportedly dependent upon central and peripheral actions. The present study was designed specifically to determine whether cocaine affects baroreflex sensitivity and whether this is mediated by an action in the CNS. Baroreflex control of heart rate was assessed by noting the change in the duration of the arterial pulse pressure or in the heart rate elicited by administration of pressor and depressor agents. The effects of intracerebroventricular and intravenous cocaine administration were compared. Cocaine (0.1-0.15 mg/kg/min, i.v.) produced a …

Heart rate changes evoked by hypoxia in the anaesthetized, artificially ventilated cat.

Reflex changes in heart rate evoked by hypoxia were investigated in cats anesthetized with chloralose and ventilated by positive pressure during administration of vecuronium or gallamine. In five cats receiving vecuronium and with aortic pressure stabilized, systemic hypoxia (arterial O2 pressure (Pa, O2) 34.9 mmHg) reduced heart rate by 55.8 +/- 7.5 beats min-1 (mean +/- S.E.M.). After administration of atropine, hypoxia (Pa, O2 32.1 mmHg) increased heart rate by 28.2 +/- 3.4 beats min-1. After subsequent bilateral ablation of carotid sinus and vagus nerves, hypoxia (Pa, O2 31.9 mmHg) increas…

Potentiation of the baroreceptor-heart rate reflex by sympathectomy in conscious rats.

In both animals and humans, stimuli leading to sympathetic activation are accompanied by an impairment of the baroreceptor-heart rate reflex. To determine whether sympathetic activity normally interferes with this reflex function we examined in conscious Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats the effect of chemical sympathectomy by 6-hydroxydopamine on the bradycardic response to baroreceptor stimulation induced by raising blood pressure via intravenous phenylephrine boluses; control rats received vehicle. Spontaneously hypertensive rats were also studied because in these animals there is both a baroreceptor…

Observations on gastro-oesophageal reflux, central apnoea and heart rate in infants.

Respiratory movements and heart rate were monitored continuously during the course of 2 h radionuclide studies to detect gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) in 22 infants following a milk feed. Twenty infants had GOR, to upper oesophageal/pharyngeal level in 19, and 17 had central apnoea between 3 and 15s. Prolonged central apnoea (greater than 20s) was not observed. Bradycardia, defined as a heart rate less than 80 beats/min for 10s or more, was observed in only 1 infant who did not have GOR. No correlation was found between the number or duration of reflux episodes and the frequency of respirato…

The heart rate spectrum in simulated flight: reproducibility and effects of atropine.

The heart rate spectrum (HRS) was computed on eight pilots during simulated flight. Although respiratory-coupled heart rate variability (i.e., that produced by vagal inputs to the heart) varied three-fold across volunteers, each individual volunteer's data were very stable on three test days (median coefficient of variation = 5.4%). Atropine rapidly reduced heart rate variability at the respiratory frequency to the noise level (i.e., 74% decrease from predrug levels). Although there was no significant difference in the reduction induced by a 2 mg or 4 mg dose, there was a tendency for variabil…

Fetal heart rate monitoring during labour--too frequent intervention, too little benefit?

For many obstetricians and midwives continuous electronic fetal heart rate monitoring during labour has replaced the traditional method of intermittent auscultation. Of the eight prospective randomised controlled trials designed to assess its value in obstetric care, four were concerned with mothers defined as being at high-risk, three with normal or low-risk patients, and the eighth with the total population of a maternity hospital over several months. None suggested any major advantage of continuous fetal heart rate monitoring over intermittent surveillance in terms of neonatal mortality, mo…

Heart rate and blood pressure changes associated with cataplexy in canine narcolepsy.

Blood pressure and heart rate were monitored in narcoleptic dogs by means of a chronically implanted catheter placed in the descending aorta. Changes in these variables were recorded during spontaneously occurring cataplectic episodes. We found no reliable change in blood pressure associated with cataplexy onset. However, heart rate showed a marked increase prior to the onset of cataplexy, with peak heart rates being reached at or shortly after the disappearance of muscle tone. Autonomic events correlated with increased heart rate may contribute to the triggering of cataplexy in narcoleptics.

[Effects of local anesthetics on fetal heart rate patterns and neonatal neurobehavior].

Changes in FHR after local anesthetic administration were analyzed and the neonatal neurobehavioral status was evaluated by the use of Amiel-Tison's NACS (Neurologic and Adaptive Capacity Scoring System). The following results were obtained. After the epidural administration of 35 mg bupivacaine transient ominous FHR changes were noted in 12 out of 99 cases, two of which followed maternal hypotension and five followed uterine hyperactivity. Among 13 out of 43 paracervical blocks by 200mg lidocaine transient FHR changes were noted; "post PCB bradycardia"/late deceleration with decreasing variab

Assessment of aortocoronary bypass grafting using exercise ST segment/heart rate relation.

The maximal rate of progression of ST segment depression relative to increases in heart rate (maximal ST/HR slope) has recently been shown to be an accurate index of the presence and the severity of coronary heart disease in patients with angina. The value of this new exercise test was assessed in patients undergoing aortocoronary bypass. The maximal ST/HR slope and the results of coronary angiography were obtained in each of 46 patients before aortocoronary bypass surgery and in 26 of the 46 patients six months after the operation. At each stage of the investigation the maximal ST/HR slope de…

Peripheral opioid receptors influencing heart rate in rats: evidence for endogenous tolerance.

Opioid peptides injected into the circulation of rats evoke a vagally mediated bradycardia. The intravenous ED50 of morphine for producing a greater than or equal to 10% fall in heart rate was determined in urethane-anesthetized rats. Hypophysectomy, or adrenalectomy plus treatment with dexamethasone (0.5 microgram/h, s.c., 1 day), procedures that remove endogenous sources of opioid peptides, increased the sensitivity of the animal to morphine bradycardia by 6-10-fold. Conversely, stressing the animals by exposure to cold (4-6 degrees C for two days) elevated the ED50 for morphine sulfate and …

Arterial baroreflex control of heart rate in the horse, pig, and calf.

The heart rate (HR) response to stepwise changes in mean arterial pressure (MAP) produced by methoxamine and sodium nitroprusside was studied in conscious horses, pigs, and calves. The respective steady-state arterial baroreflex sensitivities (delta HR/delta MAP expressed as beats min-1 . mm of Hg-1) were -1.20, -1.21, and -0.39 for decreasing MAP and -0.08, -0.91, and -0.56 for increasing MAP. After parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) blockade with atropine, the reflex sensitivity to decreasing MAP in horses and the pigs decreased to -0.62 and -0.65, respectively (P less than 0.05), whereas …

Systolic time interval v heart rate regression equations using atropine: reproducibility studies.

1. Systolic time intervals (STI) were recorded in six normal male subjects over a period of 3 weeks. On one day per week, each subject received incremental doses of atropine intravenously to increase heart rate, allowing the determination of individual STI v HR regression equations. On the other days STI were recorded with the subjects resting, in the supine position. 2. There were highly significant regression relationships between heart rate and both LVET and QS2, but not between heart rate and PEP. 3. The regression relationships showed little intra-subject variability, but a large degree o…

[Lowering the heart rate in tachycardiac atrial fibrillation by beta receptor blockade].

The effects of the long-acting beta-receptor blocking agent Nadolol on ventricular rate was evaluated by Holter monitoring in 14 patients with chronic atrial fibrillation, in whom no effective control of heart rate could be obtained by digitalis only. There was a significant drop of heart rate after the treatment with 2 times 60 mg Nadolol daily to 70% of control values (ten patients treated for one week). Treatment with 120 mg Nadolol once daily proved to be equally effective in four patients. Reduction of heart rate was most marked in periods of physical activity, while there was only a smal…

Fetal heart rate in the second stage of labour and fetal outcome.

Fetal heart rate tracings were obtained in 50 patients who had a normal 1st stage of labour until delivery of the baby. Fetal condition at birth was assessed by umbilical cord artery (UCA) pH and Apgar scores. Forty-eight of the 50 fetal heart tracings showed frequent, marked, early decelerations throughout the 2nd stage of labour. These tracings, when not accompanied by other pathological features, were associated with a good fetal outcome at birth.

Fetal heart rate patterns and development in the first year of life.

The development of 50 high-risk infants who were provided intrauterine monitoring during labor was prospectively evaluated. Twelve infants had normal fetal heart rate patterns, 16 moderate-severe variable patterns, and 22 severe variable or late deceleration patterns. The parity, socioeconomic status, race of the mothers, and sex of the infants were similar in each group. The infants were examined neurologically 48 to 72 hours after birth and at 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months of age. Denver Developmental Standard testing was performed at 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months of age. A statistically significant…

Effect of exercise on systemic blood pressure and heart rate in horses.

Carotid loops were prepared in 3 horses several months prior to the experiments. Systemic blood pressure was recorded at rest and during exercise by insertion of a plastic cannula into the carotid artery. The pressure transducer was fixed at the neck of the animal. The blood pressure signal was transmitted by telemetry. When the horses were standing under the rider, the following results were obtained: heart rate 38 +/- 5 beats-min-1, systolic pressure 115 +/- 15, disstolic pressure 83 +/- 10, mean pressure 97 +/- 12, and pulse pressure 32 +/- 9 mm Hg. During steady gallop at a mean speed of 5…
