Contralateral migration of cerebral sparganosis through the splenium.

Even though it has been known for some time that the cerebral sparganosis could migrate to the contralateral hemisphere, there have been no reports which described the route of migration. This paper reports a case of cerebral sparganosis which migrated from the right temporo-occipital lobe to the contralateral temporo-occipital lobe though the splenium over a period of 3 years. A 24-year-old man visited our hospital complaining of headache for about a month. Three years ago, non-contrast MRI had been performed in a local hospital, and the major finding was cortical atrophy and ventricular dila

[The role of insects (Blattodea, Diptera, and Hymenoptera) as possible mechanical vectors of helminths in the domiciliary and peridomiciliary environment].

Helminths can be transmitted to human beings in several ways, but little attention has been given to vector or mechanical transmission of infective forms by insects. The present study surveys the helminth species present in three orders of insects that coexist in proximity with the human environment. A total of 700 insects (54 Blattodea, 275 Diptera, and 371 Hymenoptera) were collected and examined externally and individually. In the Blattodea order, only specimens of Periplaneta americana were collected, and 58.3% were carrying the following helminth forms: Oxyuridae eggs (36.4%), Ascaridae e

The burden of tropical diseases.

More than half the world's population is at risk of the tropical diseases malaria, leprosy, schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, Chagas disease, African trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis, and half a billion people are infected with at least one of these diseases. We present statistic on the population at risk and the infected population, and on the major morbidity and mortality attributable to each of these diseases. During the next decade the prevalence of leprosy, Chagas disease, and onchocerciasis is expected to fall, but for the other tropical diseases the epidemiological

Helminth parasitisms among intermingling insular populations of white-tailed deer, feral cattle, and feral swine.

Helminth infections among free-ranging, intermingling populations of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), cattle (Bos taurus), and swine (Sus scrofa) on an island off the Georgia coast were studied. Of 39 species of helminths collected, 19 were found in deer, 17 in cattle, and 13 in swine. Of 28 species of helminths recovered from ruminants, 8, viz, Capillaria bovis, Cooperia punctata, Dictyocaulus viviparus, Gongylonema pulchrum, G verrucosum, Haemonchus contortus, Moniezia benedeni, and Trichostrongylus axei, occurred in both deer and cattle. Common liver flukes (Fasciola hepatica) in

Anthelmintic Activity of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Against the Goose Nematode Heterakis dispar (Schrank, 1790): An In Vitro Study.

In recent years, nanoparticles have been widely used in many fields, including biology and medicine. Helminthiasis pathogens continue to be detected in poultry farms, seriously affecting the quality of poultry meat. Therefore, the search for new anthelmintic agents has become an important area of research. Iron nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) are physically and chemically stable and safe for the environment. Synthesized and characterized Fe3O4 nanoparticles were tested in vitro against the nematode Heterakis dispar at concentrations of 50 and 100 μg/mL. The entry pathways of the particles into the p…
