Sideroblastic anemias are a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by anemia of varying severity and the presence of ringed sideroblasts in bone marrow. The most common form of inherited sideroblastic anemia is X-linked sideroblastic anemia (XLSA). In many XLSA patients, anemia responds variably to supplementation with pyridoxine (vitamin B6). AIM: The present study was designed to analyse clinical, haematological and histomorphogical features in 37 cases of myelodysplasic syndrome (MDS).

CONTENT: In this primer, an introduction to platelet testing in the context of the CBC is provided with a discussion of the laboratory evaluation of platelet abnormalities including thrombocytopenia and thrombocytosis.
SUMMARY: As clinical chemists continue to be tasked to direct laboratories outside of the traditional clinical chemistry sections such as hematology, expertise must be developed. This primer is dedicated to that effort.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective review of patients with pernio seen at our institution between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2011.

A cobalt excretion test was performed in 50 patients with various, mainly hematologic, disorders and was found to be an accurate and easily obtainable index of iron absorption. The test was found to be of very limited value in predicting iron stores. The cobalt excretion test may have some usefulness as a simple, apparently safe, noninvasive test for identification of persons with iron depletion resulting from uncomplicated blood loss. However, in more complex circumstances, it fails to differentiate iron deficiency anemia from anemia due to other causes.

American beavers (Castor canadensis), trapped between 2017 and 2020 for the purpose of translocation, underwent hematologic, serologic, and fecal examinations.
