Heart rate variability after BRL37344, a beta-3 agonist, in experimental bladder outlet obstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Bladder overactivity symptoms accompany benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) syndrome. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) disturbances may be involved in bladder dysfunction. An ameliorating effect on bladder overactivity is being assigned to the currently investigated β-3 adrenoreceptor agonists. However, little is known about the influence of β-3 agonists on ANS activity. The aim of our study was to estimate ANS activity using heart rate variability (HRV) in experimental model of bladder outlet obstruction (BOO), reflecting human BPH. MATERIAL/METHODS: 30 female rats, divided in

Increased salivary chromogranin A in women with severe negative mood states in the premenstrual phase.

The present study investigated whether salivary chromogranin A (CgA), a psychological stress marker associated with sympathetic nervous system activity, changes during the menstrual cycle in women with different degrees of premenstrual psychoemotional symptoms. Forty-five women (28.6 ± 1.3 years) with regular menstrual cycles participated in this study. Salivary CgA and cortisol were measured during the follicular and late-luteal phases. The authors used the Profile of Mood State (POMS) to assess current mood states of subjects in each menstrual phase and divided the subjects into three groups

Topiramate treatment protects blood-brain barrier pericytes from hyperglycemia-induced oxidative damage in diabetic mice.

Diabetes mellitus causes cerebral microvasculature deterioration and cognitive decline. The specialized endothelial cells of cerebral microvasculature comprise the blood-brain barrier, and the pericytes (PC) that are in immediate contact with these endothelial cells are vital for blood-brain barrier integrity. In diabetes, increased mitochondrial oxidative stress is implicated as a mechanism for hyperglycemia-induced PC loss as a prerequisite leading to blood-brain barrier disruption. Mitochondrial carbonic anhydrases (CA) regulate the oxidative metabolism of glucose and thus play an important

Parasympathetic overactivity in patients with nasal septum deformities.

Nasal septum deformities (NSD) are one of the most frequent reasons for nasal obstruction presented with a reduction in nasal airflow and chronic mucosal irritation. Nasocardiac reflex which includes afferent stimulus with maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve and the efferent pathway of the heart via the vagus nerve is not a well-known part of autonomic nervous system (ANS). Heart rate variability (HRV) is a parameter reflecting the ANS activity on heart. The purpose of this study is to evaluate ANS functions in patients with NSD by HRV analysis. Twenty-nine patients with NSD and 26 cont

The basis of vagal efferent control of heart rate in a neotropical fish, the pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus.

The role of the parasympathetic nervous system, operating via the vagus nerve, in determining heart rate (f(H)) and cardiorespiratory interactions was investigated in the neotropical fish Piaractus mesopotamicus. Motor nuclei of branches of cranial nerves VII, IX and X, supplying respiratory muscles and the heart, have an overlapping distribution in the brainstem, while the Vth motor nucleus is more rostrally located. Respiration-related efferent activity in the cardiac vagus appeared to entrain the heart to ventilation. Peripheral stimulation of the cardiac vagus with short bursts of electric

Nerve growth factor in rheumatic diseases.

OBJECTIVES: The nervous system modulates the immune response in many autoimmune syndromes by neurogenic inflammation. One of the pivotal mediators is nerve growth factor (NGF), which is known for its effects on neuronal survival and growth. There is considerable evidence that NGF acts as an important mediator of many immune responses. This article reviews the role of NGF in rheumatic diseases and strategies for potential therapeutic interventions. METHODS: We conducted a database search using Medline and Medpilot. Eight hundred abstracts containing the keyword NGF and 1 of the following terms

Platelet activation in Helicobacter pylori-associated idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura: eradication reduces platelet activation but seldom improves platelet counts.

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas, the most common primary central nervous system tumors, exhibit variable clinical behavior. While World Health Organization (WHO) grading is standard, complementary biomarkers are needed to refine prognostication. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and Ki-67 are potential indicators of angiogenesis and proliferation that may enhance diagnostic precision. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between VEGF and Ki-67 expression with the histopathological features and WHO 2021 grade of meningiomas. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 73 formalin-fixed, pa

Differentiation of central nervous system lesions in AIDS patients using positron emission tomography (PET).

To determine if positron emission tomography (PET) imaging using F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) can accurately distinguish between malignant and infectious central nervous system (CNS) mass lesions in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, a prospective case series of 18 patients with HIV infection and focal CNS lesions on computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) scans was analysed. The patients were divided into 3 groups based on biopsy results, serology and response to therapy. Group 1 consisted of 8 patients with infectious lesions (4 with toxoplasmosis, 2 wit

Regulation of 2',3'-cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase gene expression in experimental peripheral neuropathies.

2',3'-Cyclic nucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase (CNPase) is an enzyme associated with central nervous system myelination. Although present in the mammalian peripheral nerve, it is not clear what its role is during myelination nor how the expression of this gene is regulated in the PNS. In this study, CNPase gene expression was studied in the crushed and permanently transected rat sciatic nerve, two models of peripheral nerve neuropathy. The Schwann cells of the crushed nerve initially demyelinate, remain in a non-myelinating condition until active regeneration induces remyelination (10-21 days af

Prevention of physostigmine-induced lethality in rats. A pharmacological analysis.

A systematic study of a large number of compounds from various pharmacological classes was performed to better define their interaction with the cholinergic nervous system. An 'in vivo' test procedure called 'physostigmine antagonism' in rats was used; it involved the administration of the test compounds, measurement of the pupil diameter and recording of the survival time after injection of a lethal dose of physostigmine. Known peripherally acting anticholinergics, such as isopropamide and methylscopolamine did not protect from physostigmine lethality at doses up to more than 150 times the my

Moderating effects of the valence of social interaction on the dysfunctional consequences of perseverative cognition: an ecological study in major depression and social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Major depression disorder (MDD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) are characterized by the use of perseverative cognition (PC) as a dysfunctional coping strategy. We sought to investigate the dysfunctional physiological and psychological consequences of PC and how the valence of social interactions moderates such consequences in these psychopathological conditions. DESIGN/METHODS: The study combined 24-hour heart rate variability (HRV) and ecological momentary assessments in 48 individuals with MDD, SAD, and sex-matched controls. RESULTS: In all participants, PC wa

Heat shock proteins and chronic fatigue in primary Sjögren's syndrome.

Fatigue occurs frequently in patients with cancer, neurological diseases and chronic inflammatory diseases, but the biological mechanisms that lead to and regulate fatigue are largely unknown. When the innate immune system is activated, heat shock proteins (HSPs) are produced to protect cells. Some extracellular HSPs appear to recognize cellular targets in the brain, and we hypothesize that fatigue may be generated by specific HSPs signalling through neuronal or glial cells in the central nervous system. From a cohort of patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome, 20 patients with high and 20 pa

What are the risks of biologic therapy in rheumatoid arthritis? An update on safety.

The tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) blockers infliximab and etanercept and the recombinant interleukin 1 (IL-1) receptor antagonist anakinra are effective in patients with active rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Here, information in the medical literature and public domain is used to consider the safety of these biologic agents. TNF-alpha inhibition with infliximab has been associated with reactivation of tuberculosis and possibly development of other opportunistic infections (histoplasmosis, listeriosis. and pneumocystis). Exacerbations of multiple sclerosis and other central nervous system

A systematic review and meta-analysis of heart rate variability in epilepsy and antiepileptic drugs.

PURPOSE: Epilepsy is associated with near-fatal and fatal arrhythmias, and sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is partly related to cardiac events. Dysfunction of the autonomous nervous system causes arrhythmias and, although previous studies have investigated the effects of epilepsy on the autonomic control of the heart, the results are still mixed regarding whether imbalance of sympathetic, vagal, or both systems is present in epilepsy, and also the importance of anticonvulsant treatment on the autonomic system. Therefore, we aimed to investigate epilepsy and its treatment impact on

Hydrogen sulfide in the paraventricular nucleus attenuates endoplasmic reticulum stress in Spontaneous hypertension.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), known as a metabolic modulator, is a gaseous signaling molecule with functions similar to those of nitric oxide and carbon monoxide, all of which possess vasodilatory, antioxidant, and other properties. In the central nervous system, H2S is a signaling molecule that is crucial for neuroprotection and the control of neurological processes. The paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus is an important central nucleus that regulates and integrates cardiovascular and peripheral sympathetic activity. This study aimed to investigate whether intra-PVN injection of the

Emotional body odors alter autonomic nervous activity during mindfulness training in social anxiety.

Chemosignals found in human body odors (BOs) convey information about a person's emotional state and elicit observable responses in others. While mindfulness typically enhances parasympathetic tone and reduces anxiety, little is known about how BOs modulate these effects. This study investigated how emotional and non-emotional human BOs influence autonomic nervous system activity - heart rate variability (HRV) and electrodermal activity (EDA) - during mindfulness practice in individuals with social anxiety. The role of baseline HRV as a predictor of intervention outcome was explored. Ninety-ei

CSF Cytokine Network Organization Predicts Progression Independent of Relapse and MRI Activity in Multiple Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Progression independent of relapse activity is a major determinant of long-term disability in multiple sclerosis, but its immunopathologic basis remains incompletely understood. We investigated whether relapse-independent progression in radiologically stable relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis is associated with distinct cerebrospinal fluid inflammatory profiles and whether cytokine-network features provide information beyond single-mediator levels. METHODS: In this prospective observational cohort study, baseline cerebrospinal fluid cytokine and chemokine profiling was performe

Neural Metabolic Networks: Key Elements of Healthy Brain Function.

Neural networks are responsible for processing sensory stimuli and driving the synaptic activity required for brain function and behavior. This computational capacity is expensive and requires a steady supply of energy and building blocks to operate. Importantly, the neural networks are composed of different cell populations, whose metabolic profiles differ between each other, thus endowing them with different metabolic capacities, such as, for example, the ability to synthesize specific metabolic precursors or variable proficiency to manage their metabolic waste. These marked differences like

Developmental and neurobehavioral toxicity of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in zebrafish larvae.

Di-ethyl hexyl phthalate (DEHP), a plasticizer used in medical devices and cosmetics, easily leaches into the environment due to its weak chemical bonds with plastics. Humans and other organisms are exposed to DEHP through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact, inflicting toxic effects like neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, and reproductive toxicity. However, there is a lack of information on its developmental toxicity, and its role in demyelination is also not well understood. We explored the adverse effects of DEHP during the early developmental stage of zebrafish larvae, focusing on its de

Kinetic Determination of Cerebrospinal Fluid Adenosine Deaminase Activity for the Diagnosis of Tuberculous Meningitis.

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a common infectious disease of the central nervous system. Detection of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity for the diagnosis of TBM has a relatively high accuracy. Most previous reports determined ADA levels by following the colorimetric method of Giusti (endpoint assay). Recently, a Diazyme ADA assay kit was developed to determine CSF ADA levels. This study aimed to define the cutoff value of CSF ADA that is diagnostic for TBM with the Diazyme ADA assay kit. Adults with meningitis were included in the study. The diagnostic properties o
