Amblyomma parvitarsum (Acari: Ixodidae): localities, hosts and host-parasite ecology.

Only a few aspects of the biology of Amblyomma parvitarsum Neumann are known. Adults of this hard tick species are parasites of South American camelids in the Andean plateau of Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Chile and also in the Argentine Patagonia, but they have been also rarely found on other artyodactils and two species of birds. The larva has been collected from reptiles in northern Chile, whereas the hosts for the nymph remain unknown. On nine localities included within Altitude Tropical and Perarid Mediterranean ecoregions in northern Chile, we analyzed 237 reptiles, 285 birds, 624 rodent

Review of the systematics, biology and ecology of lice from pinnipeds and river otters (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Anoplura: Echinophthiriidae).

We present a literature review of the sucking louse family Echinophthiriidae, its five genera and twelve species parasitic on pinnipeds (fur seals, sea lions, walruses, true seals) and the North American river otter. We give detailed synonymies and published records for all taxonomic hierarchies, as well as hosts, type localities and repositories of type material; we highlight significant references and include comments on the current taxonomic status of the species. We provide a summary of present knowledge of the biology and ecology for eight species. Also, we give a host-louse list, and a b

[The interplay between schistosome and its snail host: a review].

As the only intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum, the control of Oncomelania snails serves as a major part in schistosomiasis control. This review mainly demonstrates the following aspects: the invasion of schistosome miracidium into snails, the mechanism of resistance to miracidia, and the factors influencing this process. With a view to explore the methods of interrupting every phase during miracidium infection, this article focuses on the possibility for safeguarding human health through protecting snails, namely, achieving snails harmlessness.

Hepatic echinococcosis: clinical and therapeutic aspects.

Echinococcosis or hydatid disease (HD) is a zoonosis caused by the larval stages of taeniid cestodes belonging to the genus Echinococcus. Hepatic echinococcosis is a life-threatening disease, mainly differentiated into alveolar and cystic forms, associated with Echinoccus multilocularis (E. multilocularis) and Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus) infection, respectively. Cystic echinococcosis (CE) has a worldwide distribution, while hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is endemic in the Northern hemisphere, including North America and several Asian and European countries, like France, Germa

Anastrepha ludens and Anastrepha serpentina (Diptera: Tephritidae) do not infest Psidium guajava (Myrtaceae), but Anastrepha obliqua occasionally shares this resource with Anastrepha striata in nature.

This study examined whether economically important fruit fly species Anastrepha ludens (Loew), Anastrepha serpentina (Wiedemann), and Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) (Diptera: Tephritidae) may opportunistically exploit guavas, Psidium guajava L. (Myrtaceae), growing near preferred natural hosts. We collected 3,459 kg of guavas and 895 kg of other known host species [sour orange, Citrus aurantium L.; grapefruit, Citrus paradisi Macfadyen; mango, Mangifera indica L.; white sapote, Casimiroa edulis La Llave and Lex.; sapote, Pouteria sapota (Jacq.); sapodilla, Manilkara zapota L.; and wild plum, Sp

Factors affecting appearance of stink bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) injury on apple.

Three main types of stink bug injury have been reported on the surface of apple fruit: (1) discolored dots, (2) discolored dots with depressions, and (3) discolored dots with discolored depressions. From 2005 to 2008, studies were performed to determine the factors linked to the variations in the appearance of adult stink bug injury on apple fruit observed at harvest. The main factors tested were type of feeding injury (i.e., mechanical versus breakdown and removal of tissues), time between injury and evaluation, cultivar, fruit maturity, and relative exposure to sunlight and UV radiation. No

Host melatonin secretion is a timing signal for the release of W. bancrofti microfilaria into the circulation.

Infection of the lymphatic system by Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaria is the most common cause of elephantiasis, a disease that affects over 100 million people. The nightly release of microfilaria into the circulation coincides with the feeding activity of its mosquito vector, a synchronization that is presumably an evolutionary adaptation favoring survival and transmission of the parasite. During the daytime hours, the microfilaria are thought to be sequestered in the lungs, and because they are not exposed to the solar light/dark cycle, there must be some other cue that entrains their night

Schistosomiasis and liver fibrosis.

Schistosoma mansoni infection invariably results in liver fibrosis of the host. This fibrosis may be represented by small focal areas of chr … t production of numerous eggs and represents a severe form of a peculiar chronic hepatopathy. Thus, host-parasite interactions in schistosomiasis help us to understand a number of important features of liver fibrosis: its initiation and regulation, the significance of accompanying vascular changes, the dynamics of fibrosis formation and regression with antiparasitic treatme …

Onchocerca-Simulium interactions and the population and evolutionary biology of Onchocerca volvulus.

Parasite-vector interactions shape the population dynamics of vector-borne infections and contribute to observed epidemiological patterns. Also, parasites and their vectors may co-evolve, giving rise to locally adapted combinations or complexes with the potential to stabilise the infection. Here, we focus on Onchocerca-Simulium interactions with particular reference to the transmission dynamics of human onchocerciasis. A wide range of simuliid species may act as vectors of Onchocerca volvulus, each exerting their own influence over the local epidemiology and the feasibility of controlling/elim

Helminth genomics: The implications for human health.

More than two billion people (one-third of humanity) are infected with parasitic roundworms or flatworms, collectively known as helminth parasites. These infections cause diseases that are responsible for enormous levels of morbidity and mortality, delays in the physical development of children, loss of productivity among the workforce, and maintenance of poverty. Genomes of the major helminth species that affect humans, and many others of agricultural and veterinary significance, are now the subject of intensive genome sequencing and annotation. Draft genome sequences of the filarial worm Bru

The malaria merozoite, forty years on.

The invasive blood stage of malaria parasites, merozoites, are complex entities specialized for the capture and entry of red blood cells. Their potential for vaccination and other anti-malaria strategies have attracted much research attention over the last 40 years, and there is now a considerable body of data relating to their biology. In this article some of the major advances over this period and remaining challenges are reviewed.

Cimex pipistrelli (Heteroptera, Cimicidae) and the dispersal propensity of bats: an experimental study.

Previous results have shown frequent movements of crevice-dwelling bats between different shelters. Low roost fidelity of some dwelling bat species reduces the reproductive success of ectoparasites. The question of whether high densities of bat bugs (Cimex pipistrelli) represent a cost for crevice-dwelling bats (Pipistrellus pygmaeus), resulting in roost switching, has been examined. Sessions in a volary equipped with two bat boxes were carried out. One of the boxes was loaded with ectoparasites (low and high densities), the other served as a control and new roost for bats, which left the load

First experimental observations on the development of Rhabdochona denudata (Nematoda: Rhabdochonidae) in the intermediate host.

Two species of mayfly nymphs, Habroleptoides modesta (Hagen) and Habrophlebia lauta (Eaton) (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae), were found as suitable experimental intermediate hosts of the fish nematode Rhabdochona denudata (Dujardin, 1845) (Rhabdochonidae), an intestinal parasite of Palaearctic cyprinids. The parasite's eggs were obtained from nematode gravid females parasitizing the European chub, Leuciscus cephalus (L.), of the Rokytná River, Czech Republic. At the water temperature of 9 degrees C, the eggs of R. denudata were ingested by the intermediate host and the hatched, toothed (with

African trypanosomosis: from immune escape and immunopathology to immune intervention.

African trypanosomes can cause prolonged chronic infections through a mechanism of antigen variation whereby they manipulate the humoral immune system of their hosts. However, besides antigenic variation these extracellular parasites exert other immunoregulatory activities mainly mediated by innate cells in particular macrophage-like (M) cells. In this review, the modulation of M cells through parasite factors and host cytokines as well as their role in parasite control and immunopathology will be examined. The concept of M cell polarization into distinct activation states (M1, M2) that may co

Annexin B1 at the host-parasite interface of the Taenia solium cysticercus: Secreted and associated with inflammatory reaction.

Annexin B1 is a novel member of annexin family firstly cloned by immunological screening a Taenia solium cysticercus library. To investigate the histological distribution and physiological role(s) of this protein, we first prepared a specific monoclonal antibody against annexin B1. Western blot analysis indicated that annexin B1 could be detected in cystic fluid of T. solium cysticercus and sera of pigs/humans with cysticercosis. Thus, annexin B1 might belong to the secreted members of annexins. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that annexin B1 was mainly present in the tegument of bladder

A new species of Cardicola Short, 1953 (Digenea: Sanguinicolidae) parasitizing the Brazilian flathead, Percophis brasiliensis Quoy et Gaimard 1824, from the coasts of Mar del Plata, Argentina.

Cardicola ambrosioi n. sp. (Digenea: Sanguinicolidae) is found in the blood vessels of liver and gills of the Brazilian flathead, Percophis brasiliensis Quoy and Gaimard, 1824 (Pisces: Percophidae), from Mar del Plata, Argentina. Among the 13 known species within Cardicola Short, 1953, the new species closely resembles Cardicola coridodacis Manter, 1954, from which it is distinguished by having a relatively shorter oesophagus, the vitellaria extending anteriorly to the nerve commissure, rather than to the end of anterior caeca, the female pore located closer to male pore, the latter situated m
